  • Mine has a shitey battery life

  • Loser. NETBOOKS RULE!!! In fact, I'm posting this comment from one, my Acer Asphire One!!!

  • he has a point, netbooks are just $100-$200 off full notebooks now, its bullshit, the point of netbooks are to be cost effective. 6 cell battery of a netbook, can do around 8-9 hours,IF your screen is on power save, and your not using wifi. This video I can agree with

  • @xcv159.

I thought again and yes I still think your a wanker.

  • He has a good point though, you can easily spend as much on a netbook as you could on a entry level notebook

  • I just got a Sony Vaio W series, and its pretty good. It's clearly not as high power as my other laptop, a 17" Sony Vaio VGN, but no one ever said it would be. Generally speaking netbooks are best made for those who know how to separate different tasks for different computers. My big laptop is heavy and hard to carry around... the W is perfect for ultra fast paced use like taking notes at school. I don't need to play video games or edit videos while I'm out and about anyway.....

  • This video is really old now. The line between netbook and laptop is getting much thinner. I just bought a Dell Inspiron Mini 10v and it has the 1.6Ghz CPU 160Gb HDD 2GB ram(personally upgraded from the factory 1GB) and I plan to get the matching USB bus powered DVD burner for it as well. It feels just like a normal laptop in a smaller package. I love it!

  • The one thing I DO NOT get about this video, is that Pat here talks about how AMD DOESN'T want to team against netbooks. But then again this video is for 2008. I wish AMD would release a NEW video for 2009/2010 that states what they plan for netbooks. AMD already has the "Neo" series netbook processors and they just got released and are starting to show up in netbooks (msi wind 210) and offer 1.6Ghz of speed which IS in comparison to the Intel 1.6Ghz model, yet preforms better.

  • AMD always sucked, idk why ATI work with them.

  • AMD has never sucked. Its PRICE PER PERFORMANCE. Yea, the intel core i7 975 is the top dog, and beats the amd p2 955, but its 1000 dollars where as amd's p2 955 is only 212 (newegg atm on sale but sold out). Look at what intel offers at that price, Q6600 crapola compared to the 955. NOW, I agree that AMD IS NOT TOP DOG, but yeah. $/Per.

AMD baught ATI and have made HUGE leaps. 2 4770's in Crossfire out preform the gtx 295, been proven many times.

  • You got it Intekl is fucking itself slowly. people are really starting to open their eyes now that intel jewish processors likes bombing inocent people in the middle east. where does AMD stand on killing inocent people.

  • Yes I have 2x GTX 295 and yes the ATI's crap all over them.

  • AMD OWN ATI they bought them out.

Your a Dickhead. AMD are going the Way Of Apple AMD Fully dedicated platform with 24 core hypertrans or hyperthread by middle 2010 Big surprise coming from AMD they have been busy..

  • start making an ATOM competitor AMD, cause u guys are way behind and will fall short.

  • Yea

  • This Interview is obvious out dated....Netbooks now have a longer battery life and theyre getting more powerful. You just have to watch out for the price though. They meant to be low budget. i bought because for it's portability and battery life. Doesn't matter if they're not as powerful as a regular laptop. just as long as they are powerful enough for u to use for what u need. they should fire this guy.

  • Sour Grapes! Jealous of Intel Atom Sales!

    Wake up AMD!

  • I gave you thumbs up but i still say your a wanker.LOL

  • AMD should fire him, his argumentation is so pointless. Nothing beets the mobility a netbook can give you, and his cheep 15" is still performing way to poor to replace a desktop computer.

  • VP? You must make at least 6 figures a year!!!!!

  • AMD needs to be in the 7" Everun note!! Its size is big enough to see-small enough to carry like a note pad-powerful enough to run all programs-connects to any tv/monitor and connects to 3g or wi-fi. Oh, AMD you are in there. Thanks-I ordered one today!

  • Ok last thing for now: playing 1080p movies will be fine depending on number of factors, including the codec used (H.264 is pretty tough on current netbook hardware). There are some "Via Nano vs. Intel Atom" articles floating around the web, even the 720p wasn't all that smooth on the latter in some cases.

  • [part 3 ._.] As for mentioning Vista, the point might well be that for the price of the notebook he looked at, the fee for a Vista licence was included, where netbooks will ship with Linux or XP (which MS sells for 2 potatoes and a dime on those).

There is however one thing he says where I really think he's pushing it, and it's the "they're ok around the house" because netbooks are champs when it comes to mobility. Otherwise, processing power, storage (incl. internal optical drive) -> notebook

  • [part 2 ;)] When he's saying that "one of the hottest netbooks has a battery life of under 2 hours" he could very much be referring to the Acer Aspire One (he prolly can't name brands for legal reasons - endorsing/advertising...) which in its low end incarnation boasts a 3-cell that has repeatedly been seen as weak. Sure you can get a better one, though each upgrade (e.g. more onboard storage, another major trade-off) adds to the price tag which ends up awfully close to a notebook's. [...]

  • Why such a fuss? He's not bashing netbooks, rather saying that: 1. consumers should make sure they know what they're getting and 2. maybe manufacturers should avoid blurring the line between netbooks and notebooks so as not to confuse consumers.

I think he's right for the most part. minipcpro, you're saying yourself that people buy it as a 2nd or 3rd device, which pretty much he's point: entry level netbooks shouldn't be seen as cheap drop-in replacements for full featured notebooks [...]

  • Oopsie sorry for the typo: "which pretty much is his point"* :)

  • Geez, is this guy stupid or something?

Show me a cheap 15.4" laptop with even 3 hours of battery life? Nope, not any avaible in Finland (or most likely in all of Europe).

How about this one: instead of getting a netbook with 3-cell battery get one with 6-cell battery and you have 5-6 hours battery life.

I already have a good desktop PC so my next purchase will be a netbook most likely, since cheap 15.4" laptops weight way too much and have poor battery life.

  • If you want to have a longer battery life on a notebook, go HP, they tend to come with a 4-Cell AND an 8-Cell Battery.

  • Some valid points.

  • but the customers don't care about it. They are buying these systems as a 2nd or even 3rd device because they look great, they are inexpensive and they do what they have to do, which is surfing the web, emailing, voip etc. But you can even play 1080p movies on an 1.6 Ghz Atom (well Pat from AMD couldn't even manage to get a smooth 720p playback in his MSI Wind but i guess he is just not so into hardware and drivers :p ). So just don't compare them to ordinary huge and heavy notebooks!

  • The first netbook was the EEE which came out around Halloween, so this market is going to be 1 yr old.

Acer sold 2 MILLION units in this quarter (Apple sold 1.4 million laptops in their best).

    Every manufacturer has released one.

    "Does the user REALLY understand?"

is code for "were much smarter and we know what you want better than you do".

This video explains a lot about how things work (or dont)at AMD. (and I use their products)

Find this guy for the 2nd anniversary and ask him again.

  • the big question for the 2nd anniversary will be, if Pat still works for AMD then :)

or even better, if AMD is still alive.

Sorry to sound so pessimistic but since the Geode, AMD just produced BS when it comes to low power consumption. The ULV Athlon they announced a year ago on the Boston Embedded was just a huge heater and the new BGA cpu seems to be more a kinda vaporware.

I hope they will prove me wrong and come out with something huge (or better small) but i am doubting that. Sad!

  • "1 hour and 45 of life" on the "hottest" netbooks? What kind of crappy out of date piece of junk are you testing on? Or perhaps are you playing games on it like the idiot that you seem to be? IMO, this brings down the whole image of AMD to me, not to mention the uberpulse, who posted it. "at the price of a full-featured laptop! So is it really worth it? I think not." LOL. Least I know who NOT to subscribe to.

  • Really? Strange then that the multinational where I work is in the process of buying a pool of eee PC1000H's for travelers (by popular demand of the staff).

  • And what´s the crap about Vista? Who the fuck really wants Vista to be honest. If you like Windows you are better off with XP, if you like Apple you´ve got your OSX and if you like Linux there are a lot of distros out there. But Vista? Not really...

  • I wonder if this guy really believes the crap he said. Probably not. AMD has slept. They slept while Intel introduced the Atom processor which is now kind of the standard processor in netbooks. No wonder AMD tries to bash the netbooks. ADM didn´t see that one coming and now they are crying like little babies. It´s sad really.

  • he is absolutely right for the first 10 seconds,

"Every year there is something new"

    right, Pat!

And every year AMD is missing the boat again. Pretty much one of the best spins i have ever seen in all IT history which really scares me, cause it seems that AMD is just living in denial.

Hello guys, we need a strong competitor to Intel, so please get rid of this guys if he can make decisions for your company...

    Again, very very scary

  • You guys are total idiots. AMD isn't trashing netbooks. They're just suggesting that people will be disapointed with this netbook based on they currently use their notebooks. If you're used to driving 0-60 in 5 seconds, you'll be awfully bummed when you try the same thing in a Honda Accord.

  • well and this is why they should just fire him cause he has no clue about the market and the potential customer. Netbooks are not only getting bought as a 2nd or 3rd device but also a lot of impulse buyers are just buying these systems. As soon as a new netbook is hitting the shelves of the computer stores, they are sold out!

AMD is just missing it again.

  • do you have any idea what the market is for netbooks? it's like less than 2% of the market. and just because you see some article on some fancy website, you think AMD should jump in? as a stock holder, i'm glad they're trying to concentrate on the meat of the market. besides dumbass, if it's so easy to jump into that market, why don't you do it? first you'd have to stop bangin you're FAT girlfriend.

  • when you really wanna know something about the status of a company, just look at their stock holders. You are pretty much the best example of living in denial but hey, at least you have some nice insults after your "killer" arguements. Thanks for that sweetheart ;)

  • sorry i can't resist but i just saw the recent Gartner stats again. Good luck with living in denial. 10% of marketshare for netbooks in less than a year. I can only hope for you naive stockholders of AMD, that they change their philosophy radically... NOW! Cause the market needs AMD, we all need good competitors otherwise we will end up paying 500 bucks for a core 2 duo!

  • AMD missed the boat on the netbook revolution. When this video was shot, it was already evident that AMD was trying to spin the story.

Laptops are a shrinking market segment, and netbook sales are exploding Worldwide. Meanwhile, this dude is talking like netbooks are a passing fad.

Shopping always calms me down: NetbookComputers dotcom

  • I think he may be wrong. I see it as the trend. UMPCs is a lousy analogy. Those things cost like a couple grand and you could not even type on them.

  • this guy has to forecast the market? he's way off! Amd get rid of this dude. people obviously want small affordable netbooks -next to their standard pc. Amd could make a good market with them, developing energy efficient netbook cpu's

  • If the user doesnt understand the trade offs, why are they buying it to begin with? I don't know about other people, but I don't want to carry around a 7lb brick when I can have a 2-4 pound tiny thing that works well for what it is. Also why is carrying around a little battery such a bad thing? It just annoys me all these people are hating on netbooks because they aren't as fast as a normal laptop. Well of course not. The prices aren't that bad either. I'm looking into an aspire one or Mini Note
