Dear Askthebuilder or Tim let me start out by saying your videos are great and instructions are easy to follow. Know any good video's for braceing a load bearing wall or am I just makeing it more complicated then it really is. Can I just use a 4x4 as a top plate then space jack post every 4' oc and use a 2x4 as my bottom plate next to the LBwall and on other side if it is an interior LBwall. Then do the exactat same thing in basement. I also have a question about deteriorating concrete steps.
@ahmad91234 You may have to rent one of the cool new tools that are inspection cameras. You drill a tiny hole, insert the tool, and see which way the joists are running.
Did anyone else notice the Google sign in the background toward the end? Do you live at Google H.Q. Tim? lol Anyway thanks for the good advice as always, and what a gorgeous house
@hitachi088 Yes, it's in my house. The cost depends on where the house is. My house currently is worth much more than $300K. But this house on the coast in California in Carmel, well, maybe it would sell for $5,000,000 or more! Location, location, location.
hi looking to remove a wall,,but i want to put the rsj into the ceiling,,ie i want the ceiling too be flush no boxing ,,can i cut the wooden joists tooo put the rsj up into the ceiling,,,cheers
I have a situation where the previous homeowner added an extra room and made an opening in one of the foundation walls into the new room. I would like to know if the foundation wall can be at all removed or opened up further even though it seems to be perpendicular to the load bearing wall. I know this because the ceilings are angled. Any info will help.
Situations like this can only be resolved with a field visit to the site by a residential structural engineer, and/or a builder - remodeler that can PROVE to you they have the qualifications to make the right decision. Call a structural engineer. It buys tremendous peace of mind.
Generally speaking yes, but not always. I can easily build a wall parallel to a load bearing wall, and it cross under the joists but not have any weight on it.
thnks for the info im willing to look foward building my first house rie now im just gathering information just to be safe and know whats going on thanks again
let me refraise that you are a teacher 2 open public your right again!! keeping score:-) i'm going to ^^scribe you^^on my page..i like your work hope to see you in another vid.
WOW, that's a basement?!?!?! Man, that can't be a basement, look how high the ceiling is. That's like a 12 foot ceiling right there, IN A BASEMENT! That must be one heck of a house, lol. Judging by the colour of your garage, I would asume that this is your house, no?
You have one heck of a house Tim. I hope to have a house as beautiful as your one day when I grow up.
BTW, How much snow do you have out there still, and is the lake open yet?
Basement ceilings are 11' 3". It's my place. The lot is steep, so that's what it took to make grade work at the front door. No open water on the north end of Lake Winnesquam yet and it's April 5th!

you should put in a bowling alley, but being as though you are in NH, it would probably be candlepin.

What about knocking out a wall in a single-story home? I guess that you would have to look at the trusses in the attic?
As a new homeowner who isn't afraid to work on things I love these videos, by the way!
