  • Dear Askthebuilder or Tim let me start out by saying your videos are great and instructions are easy to follow. Know any good video's for braceing a load bearing wall or am I just makeing it more complicated then it really is. Can I just use a 4x4 as a top plate then space jack post every 4' oc and use a 2x4 as my bottom plate next to the LBwall and on other side if it is an interior LBwall. Then do the exactat same thing in basement. I also have a question about deteriorating concrete steps.

  • That's a lot of receptacles!

  • Ha ha ha "Do not collapse your house", that was awesome.

  • this is totally Bruce Mcullogh's dad. Good video!

  • very clear and useful information...but how about if there werent any blue prints what would you do

  • @ahmad91234 You may have to rent one of the cool new tools that are inspection cameras. You drill a tiny hole, insert the tool, and see which way the joists are running.

  • Love to have you as a teacher...you made what should be confusing stuff very simple to understand...great video

  • Thank you. Great video

  • That is a huge basement.

  • @redpillftw Indeed it is. Ceiling height is 11 feet 3 inches.

  • Did anyone else notice the Google sign in the background toward the end? Do you live at Google H.Q. Tim? lol Anyway thanks for the good advice as always, and what a gorgeous house

  • @pashastookie I'm just a big fan of Google. Good eye noticing that.

  • @AsktheBuilder

it is your house ? pretty nice .

a house like that in the USA maybe cost like 300K ++?

  • @hitachi088 Yes, it's in my house. The cost depends on where the house is. My house currently is worth much more than $300K. But this house on the coast in California in Carmel, well, maybe it would sell for $5,000,000 or more! Location, location, location.

  • Not just talk but Action to demonstrate. a fine video

  • cheers

  • hi looking to remove a wall,,but i want to put the rsj into the ceiling,,ie i want the ceiling too be flush no boxing ,,can i cut the wooden joists tooo put the rsj up into the ceiling,,,cheers

  • @kennyboys1 Yes you can. Read all the columns in my Structural category at my AsktheBuilder web site.

  • @AsktheBuilder ,cheers ..great site ,,went into structual and cant seem to find it,,can u help

  • @kennyboys1 Just read all my columns about beams and such. I can't give you step-by-step instructions here. Not possible.

  • I have a situation where the previous homeowner added an extra room and made an opening in one of the foundation walls into the new room. I would like to know if the foundation wall can be at all removed or opened up further even though it seems to be perpendicular to the load bearing wall. I know this because the ceilings are angled. Any info will help.

  • Situations like this can only be resolved with a field visit to the site by a residential structural engineer, and/or a builder - remodeler that can PROVE to you they have the qualifications to make the right decision. Call a structural engineer. It buys tremendous peace of mind.

  • I love the excitement! So basically in all that, if the wall is perpendicular to the joists above its a load bearing wall?

  • Generally speaking yes, but not always. I can easily build a wall parallel to a load bearing wall, and it cross under the joists but not have any weight on it.

  • our Basement's cealing have big cracks . and we want to do paint there what we need to do before paintig ......we can see the big cracks

  • thnks for the info im willing to look foward building my first house rie now im just gathering information just to be safe and know whats going on thanks again

  • I love your videos! They are so informative!!!

  • Thanks! We try hard to be informative and a tad humorous.

  • let me refraise that you are a teacher 2 open public your right again!! keeping score:-) i'm going to ^^scribe you^^on my page..i like your work hope to see you in another vid.

  • you wold make a good teacher tim.

  • Thanks! I thought that's what I'm doing now! :->

  • Basement?

    but it's the ground floor ? :D

  • W a l k O u t Basement...... :->

  • WOW, that's a basement?!?!?! Man, that can't be a basement, look how high the ceiling is. That's like a 12 foot ceiling right there, IN A BASEMENT! That must be one heck of a house, lol. Judging by the colour of your garage, I would asume that this is your house, no?

You have one heck of a house Tim. I hope to have a house as beautiful as your one day when I grow up.

BTW, How much snow do you have out there still, and is the lake open yet?

    Take care!

  • Basement ceilings are 11' 3". It's my place. The lot is steep, so that's what it took to make grade work at the front door. No open water on the north end of Lake Winnesquam yet and it's April 5th!

  • wow tim. that's one gorgeous house. Your's?

  • Thanks. It's the house on the loch here in New Hampshire.

  • you should put in a bowling alley, but being as though you are in NH, it would probably be candlepin.

  • What about knocking out a wall in a single-story home? I guess that you would have to look at the trusses in the attic?

As a new homeowner who isn't afraid to work on things I love these videos, by the way!

  • Please go to my website. READ all the columns in my Structural category. You can't be tearing out walls willy nilly.

  • Is it me, or is the ceiling in the little room lower than the big room with the beam?

  • It's you. Same height.

  • thanks :)

  • kl nice house

  • what is the google logo in the back at 5:00 doing in the house?

  • I'm a big fan of Google. So I got this big beach towel that I use as an indoor flag of sorts. Cool, huh?

  • Five Stars!!

  • i love that room red color with wihte !
