The people in that school only represent a small sample of the overall female population. I, being a Chinese woman, and having been to China many times myself, don't believe that most women in China are like this. There exists a spectrum, as the fashion editor said, of different attitudes that women have about their lives. It is similar to how there are people who are Republican and Democrat in the United States. Women are free to choose their own lives in China.
Oh, did you know that in the Philippines, that it is against their law for a woman to work from 10:00 pm to 6:00 in the morning. In other words, they are not allowed to work the graveyard shift. Talk about holding women back.

Yes in rural uneducated China there is a problem with preference for boys, but that is due to lack of social security, the one child policy, and poverty. To say that the whole Chinese culture is sexist is too simple. There are vast regional and socioeconomic differences.
Women have to own their own businesses in China because they will not be hired or promoted in male dominated companies. I know educated young Chinese women who will not date Chinese men because their culture is misogenistic.
@coordinates000 I have talked to American men and women who've been in China, Singapore and Hong Kong and they were all impressed with how strong the women were. A white lady said she was impressed because the women were thoroughly integrated as executives in the companies she did business with. You haven't been there so you can't judge. I've interviewed people and I am Chinese and the men in my family are very kind. In fact a few are mistreated by their wives because they're too nice.
Again there are a lot of regional and individual differences. My Chinese friends and family don't discriminate against women. I have always been treated as a equal with my male relatives and I know a lot of nice Chinese guys. I can also find a lot of statistics about crimes against women in the US, plastic surgery, eating disorders, rapes, and if I repeated those over and over again with no context or balanced views, then people would be convinced that this is a misogynistic society as well.

There is of course sexism in China as in every country, but he is making broad condemnations of an entire culture not taking into account the diversity and numerous socioeconomic factors. There are tonnes of other girls who are taller at around 165cm and equally pretty but there's indeed a lot of pressure felt in my position because in all magazines, advertisements and portrayal of ideals of beauty, there's no short women and there's a lot of white blonde women being the spokesperson or face of international brands. And with these westernisation of the idea of beauty, there's a fair share of men who love their woman with some legs.

@kev95 Personally, I have relatives an uncle and aunties who always commented that "You're pretty, but it's a pity you're short". And when I go to work as a salesperson, I feel somewhat unfair knowing that the beautiful tall model is hired to work 1/3 of my working hours and she gets's double my pay because she's tall. That model works for international beer brands like Heineken and it's not uncommon for these companies to want pretty tall girls.

The Chinese and Koreans that I know eat a lot of fish, but it is true that many regions of the world enjoy an abundance of fish and the mediterranean is definitely no exception. Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with middle eastern food, but something that is undeniable are the healthful benefits of Olive Oil when used in cooking.
@morocojin : In addition to the benefits of Olive Oil, I enjoy the taste it gives to certain foods. My mother is originally from South East Mexico and believe it or not, she has almost always used Olive Oil in cooking. One of the examples of food that uses a little Olive Oil is the sauteed Tilapia fish that is common from my mom's region. In fact, it is even common for my mom to put green olives together with Tilapia or when cooking Spanish rice.

Chinese, Korean & Japanese cultures in particular produce some of the most wonderful "ladies" i have ever experienced. My comment is not about controlling you or any other woman.

The people in that school only represent a small sample of the overall female population. I, being a Chinese woman, and having been to China many times myself, don't believe that most women in China are like this. There exists a spectrum, as the fashion editor said, of different attitudes that women have about their lives. It is similar to how there are people who are Republican and Democrat in the United States. Women are free to choose their own lives in China.

@xzsb Yes it makes me sad. My younger sister is different from me. She feels very pressured to have nose reconstruction. She is so uncomfortable in her body, but she has always been a beautiful girl. I've tried talking to her, but we live in a society that places so much value on beauty it's sickening. No-one is ever perfect enough. There is always something to criticize, and I see it spreading into other cultures. Pressure to be thin, straighten your hair, nose job, face lift, no-one can age!

Also Time reports there are more female than male business owners and mid level managers in Shanghai. Yes in rural uneducated China there is a problem with preference for boys, but that is due to lack of social security, the one child policy, and poverty. To say that the whole Chinese culture is sexist is too simple. There are vast regional and socioeconomic differences.

A white lady said she was impressed because the women were thoroughly integrated as executives in the companies she did business with. You haven't been there so you can't judge. I've interviewed people and I am Chinese and the men in my family are very kind. In fact a few are mistreated by their wives because they're too nice.

Again there are a lot of regional and individual differences. My Chinese friends and family don't discriminate against women. I have always been treated as a equal with my male relatives and I know a lot of nice Chinese guys. I can also find a lot of statistics about crimes against women in the US, plastic surgery, eating disorders, rapes, and if I repeated those over and over again with no context or balanced views, then people would be convinced that this is a misogynistic society as well.

There is of course sexism in China as in every country, but he is making broad condemnations of an entire culture not taking into account the diversity and numerous socioeconomic factors. This report sounds like a repetition of that. This report ignores the huge progress that women have made in China, granted mostly in the urban areas. Many of the top female billionaires in the world are self made Chinese women and many executives are women.

Traditional values in Middle East and Asia viewed them as impurities and corruptions and were designed to contain them by ways of meditation and religions. There are tonnes of other girls who are taller at around 165cm and equally pretty but there's indeed a lot of pressure felt in my position because in all magazines, advertisements and portrayal of ideals of beauty, there's no short women and there's a lot of white blonde women being the spokesperson or face of international brands. And with these westernisation of the idea of beauty, there's a fair share of men who love their woman with some legs.

@kev95 Personally, I have relatives an uncle and aunties who always commented that "You're pretty, but it's a pity you're short". And when I go to work as a salesperson, I feel somewhat unfair knowing that the beautiful tall model is hired to work 1/3 of my working hours and she gets's double my pay because she's tall. That model works for international beer brands like Heineken and it's not uncommon for these companies to want pretty tall girls.

In general, I love East Asian food and find it to be among the best and most diversified in the world. The Chinese and Koreans that I know eat a lot of fish, but it is true that many regions of the world enjoy an abundance of fish and the mediterranean is definitely no exception. Unfortunately, I am not too familiar with middle eastern food, but something that is undeniable are the healthful benefits of Olive Oil when used in cooking.

@morocojin : In addition to the benefits of Olive Oil, I enjoy the taste it gives to certain foods. My mother is originally from South East Mexico and believe it or not, she has almost always used Olive Oil in cooking. One of the examples of food that uses a little Olive Oil is the sauteed Tilapia fish that is common from my mom's region. In fact, it is even common for my mom to put green olives together with Tilapia or when cooking Spanish rice.

how can you leave Mexican food to Chinese food !!!? look , even Mexican food is influenced by Moorish food , because just after the defeat of Moors in Spain , Spain did 'discover' america , and they took the Technics that they learnt from the moors . for Example 'Paella' is a Moorish dish , 'Paella' comes from Arabic "Baki'yya"(left overs) because they mixed the left overs of the week and mix them with rice . Moroccan food and Mexican food are quiet similar .

really this is about looking in the mirror. it's nothing we haven't seen before. of course finishing schools are outdated, but there have always been places in the west were girls could learn this stuff (not just 1). in my country they even made a TV show of it. so we're really just looking at ourselves here. frankly I am disgusted with it, but I don't want to change it either. these are women's choices. free will at work.

I find the conservative Chinese at Finishing School far more attractive than the ones solely attracted to Western ideals (do we really have any?) due to the fact they are true ladies, have decorum and are far more feminine which is the kind of woman you want.
How many of us Western guys go for Asian woman? A LOT of us do!!! and not because of a fetish its because the Western woman doesn't offer us as a man what we "truly" desire. The Westernization of China is a HUGE mistake!

although i'm a believer in natural beauty and never will think to extend my legs in that way, i still think women should be free to make decisions for themselves, which of course include what they are going to do with their own legs.

@dodapus I am not saying that you should live for Western men, all i am saying is that Western men find the attributes of Asian women as per their culture far more appealing that that of Western. If you adopt Western culture then it in my opinion erodes some of the greatest values and attributes that Eastern women possess and i don't mean that in a way to serve a man just more in personal behaviour, loyalty, self respect & culture.

@dodapus Yes women should be free to make their own decisions, i am not holding any women back, but the motives of those for whom are influencing those decisions are 9 times out of 10 quite dishonourable and do not have your best interests at heart. Chinese, Korean & Japanese cultures in particular produce some of the most wonderful "ladies" i have ever experienced. My comment is not about controlling you or any other woman.
