  • Is this on a DVD? Does anyone know where I can buy this? And if not, where I can get it at all in high quality? D:

  • @TKDWolf

    try abstractlogix.

  • Shawn's melodic intuition is so strong, that he could play nothing faster than an 8th note and I'd be satisfied.

  • Every One PLEASE!!!

We gotta get some one in the film documentary business to do a 2+ hour piece on this genius of the modern electric guitar. Shawn Lane beyond any doubt was THE musical genius of our time. All of his recorded data on musical theory, interpretation of sound and melody, and technical ability must be gathered, cataloged, preserved, taught at all levels of musical education, and presented on film for the masses. DON'T LET HIM FADE INTO HISTORY!!! MAKE THE FILM! WRITE THE BIO!

  • true legend, never truly known...

  • this...is..my jam. hands down.

  • what a crazy tone

  • Shawn wasn't a shredder, he was a fucking samurai

  • anyone mind explaining why fast=shred? this cat was so not a shredder, he is the very anti-thesis of your typical shredder.

  • @ChiZ712 so true!

  • @ChiZ712 Finally, some one gets it.

Shredding is running up and down scales in a linear fashion. Lane never did that. Well he rarely did if ever.

He was a virtuoso musician, and should be remembered as such. His speed is something any one can attain through much practice. His music however was one of a kind.

  • @Element404 I agree with everything you said aside from the last statement. I have (as of now) never heard a guitarist who has the technical ability Shawn does. Some come close, but you can hear the strain, the difficulty they have playing at those speeds and it comes across as slight mistakes or dynamic issues. For Shawn, playing ten notes in a second or playing one in a second both sound equally effortless for him.

  • @Dooality It's not his speed that impresses me, it's his music. It's how he phrases his lines; how he chooses his notes. He's always melodic.

And the reason that not many have reached his fluidity, is because it takes a lot of practice. When he was 10, he was playing fast. However, he was sloppy. It took him several years of technical practice to clean up his playing. He wasn't playing like this over night. Every one's, "this is impossible to do" attitude has to do with why no one can.

  • @Element404 I think the the amazing part about Shawn's speed was that he never had to develop it. Like you said, he had to clean it up, but the pure speed was always there. That almost never happens.

  • Lane was simply an alien life force who chose the electric guitar to travel through interstellar space.

    Unmatched artistry and musicianship.

    The very best, ever...indeed.

  • shawn lane is the best guitarist ever. period. nobody has the technique, phrasing, melody, and speed shawn did. he is unsurpassable in almost every way.

  • He was a machine but he also had so much soul and that is what sets him above the other guitar players that he is compared to. Shawn's legend only grows and if you don't like Shawn keep it to yourself, because honestly i doubt he could care less what you think.

  • Mmmmmmmmmmmm, what a BEAUTIFUL and tasty tone! RIP Shawn Lane

  • OMG he is AMAZING!!! I think I just had an out-of-body experience...

  • For anyone who's interested in this Shawn Lane DVD. Also check out Good People In Times of Evil and Icon. They're the albums they recorded together. Icon was the last Shawn Lane album released before his death, I believe. Good People In Times of Evil is one of my favorite albums of all time and I highly recommend it.

  • Comment removed

  • anyone got a link to download the whole dvd please?

  • Love the smile at 1:15 - it's almost like "oh this is nice isn't it?"

  • My god how versatile is this guy? He rattles off classical piano concertos, indian classical music improvisations and composes (imo) brilliant pieces like gray pianos flying which exhibit so many different stylistic features with scant regard for typical human limitations. A true god amongst men.

  • its music like this that should get the millions of views but america is tone deaf hopefully one day the world will change and music like this will serfuss again

  • Etherel

  • sexiest tone

    playing doesn't need any comments

  • hes using emg's?

  • @TahaNasserMusic awsome. takin notes

  • is shawn using some sort of pedal which alows him to play over a previously played bar thats playing backwards and/or with an affect?!?!!?!? AWSOME

  • @AChozenSunn I think he is using at least one, (but sometimes up to three) Line 6 DL4 pedals.

  • he truly, truly was wonderful..! GOD Bless!

  • incdredible. That took me another place

  • Anybody else think that he looks like Hank Williams Jr. in this video? Or better yet, does Hank Williams Jr. look like Shawn Lane?

  • @musikarkitekt Yeah maybe

  • <3 shawn lane for life

  • el ha hecho renacer la guitarra electrica

  • Love it.

  • I'd give up half of my personal belongings to have been in the presense of this man just once in my life

  • @Kingding6 Id give all my personal belongings

  • @Kingding6 Me too!

  • Speed is cool, but it's not everything. Feeling is important

  • 3:52 , 5:36 and 6:20 - best music ever to grace the history of recorded music.

I also love you guys for not caring about Shawn's speed and just caring about the beauty of his music. God bless you all and thanks very much for the upload :)

  • these guys just came together so well. especially shawn and jonas as a pair. amazing cohesion.

  • jbeck,is referring that Shawn is playing pentatonic scales in their modal sequences. Just as in western scales,or any other for that matter, the "sequence" of where he starts on the first, second, third note, etc.. Pentatonic has its modes.

  • Pentatonic modal ideas are very fun!

I use this frequently as well.

It gives you the ability to play modal runs and licks that don't sound so much like scale suicides or exercises.

That is why I use it anyways... just cause it makes it so I don't have to think so hard to get a good sound. :3

  • The rest of his body is huge, but his fingers are still skin and bone.

    RIP Shawn Lane.

  • This dude is seriously thee best musician Ive ever seen, I wish I would have heard of him sooner than I did...

  • Yeah, Shawn is definitely a diamond in the rough, but you people have to consider the skill of all the other musicians performing here. This is absolutely beautiful.

  • Just raised my respect for the man, really all the men here, who just showed what music is capable of doing.

  • I'm moved by this.Incredible people and sounds.

  • "There will never be another Shawn Lane, just like there will never be another Van Gogh. It wasn't the speed, the choice of notes, the touch, the tone, the vibrato, the fact that he could blaze on piano, his photographic memory, his superior intellect, his oblique sense of humor, his childlike kindness... it was all of these things-plus that elusive quality that placed him in a strange area located halfway between dream and reality." ~ Alex Masi... great guitarist/Lane student

  • Is this available on a cd somewhere? I'd love to listen to this at work. :) Beautiful stuff.

  • yes, this is a track from the DVD paris ( 2001 ) you should be able to get it from amazon fairly cheaply. the song is from the jonas hellborg cd good people in times of evil ( highly recommended ). this band - lane, hellborg, and the vinaykram brothers is availble on the cd icon ( also highly recommended ) enjoy!

  • Not only is he an amazing guitarist, but just look at the man...

    He sweats "cool"

    :P lol

  • thats fucking sick for being live... hes so amazing

  • excellent work, thanks for posting!

  • he certainly has some strangew music

  • Yeah haha, it can be strange at first. But you'll find something inside of you enjoys it. It calms you, makes you feel at peace at whatever point you are in your life. I would have a very hard time understanding why anybody would ever truly hate this music.

  • Beautiful.

  • Truly spiritual jamming here..timeless ty Shawn.

  • Genius Shawn! We miss you! Unique for sure!

  • Amazing!! Im shocked that Shawn didnt transcend his body and become pure sprit during this performance, because the music is surely that. Om Shanti Shawn!!

  • Who did not rate this 5 stars?

Clueless people - this should be 6 stars out of 5.

    God bless your soul Shawn.

  • Paris in the spring... nice

    PARIS on DVD... PRICELESSSS...

  • wow ive never heard this one before

    awesome

  • thats what im talking about !

    this is the real deal..

now im off to commit suicide

  • Shawn the cosmic dwelling juggernaut astronaut that was not of this time or place in space yet was...

  • Shawns soundwaves create a feeling of euphoria

  • fuck life for taking this guy away

  • @negromancer don't you mean death?

  • @negromancer the same one that brought him into this world?

  • @negromancer Thank God this guy existed and did beautiful music for us to enjoy

  • @negromancer It's called put the guitar and cheesburger down, and go outside for a bit

  • @KevinSaale If you're saying that in refrence to Shawn's weight, he was fat because of the meds he had to take his whole life.

  • @KevinSaale

Shut up man, his weight is caused by his meds.

Don't you ever disrespect Shawn Lane again.

  • @xTiLkx He's a troll, man. He thrives on irritating others, like a hemorrhoid. Not worth the time it took to make your comment.

  • This one can really make me forget about Time and Space

    That soo relaxing and meditative

It like Shawn Lane creates a Wave or a Carpet of Sound that carries me away

I know i sound like im on drugs or something... im not im just tired and waiting for my Coffee to cool down

and REALLY happy that i found out about

    Shawn Lane yesterday

  • same... feels like a world of its own, goes well with his tranquil smile too :P

  • @Zappafan1980

Well I am. And you've got it. haha

  • What is that the transmogrifying guitar he invented while taking a break from being awesome?

  • I am standing in the universe with vibes of music surrounding me.....purity......shawn lane is the greatest six string player I have ever heard........so melodical!!!

  • what album is this from? i dont have this one

  • good people in times of evil.

    by hellborg salvaganesh and lane

  • Just try to ignore this dude. Sounds like a random troll on a Friday night. I would know, it's awesome flaming deceased guitarists rather than hanging out with your friends or chasin' girls. ;)

  • This should have been promoted as Youtube's best comment the day it was posted hehe.

  • mind twisting licks

  • this is anything but a pentatonic scale. Get your ears out of your ass.

  • shawn lane actually does through a lot of pentatonic motifs into his playing. especially when he is emulating classical indian music, which uses a lot of pentatonic scales.

  • He does. He also uses a lot of modal pentatonics as well.

  • Im loving Shawns diversity and spiritual influence

  • Actually Shawn uses pentatonic all the time, but not in the conventional way. Shifts the five note patterns forward or back to match the mode he wants. So he might actually be using different notes, but they're still in the proper scale and such. Just an ingenious way of working with pentatonics.

  • wow...are you talking about shawn lane?! Thats like saying Satriani only knows Mixolydian...

  • ok ...

  • Lol.. gettin' modal on that ass yo!

  • thats the funniest thing ive read ever!

  • Awsome dosnt quite do paris justice, the tone is soo sexy

  • the ghatam is the tightest instrument ever

  • this is like your mind exploding. One of the greatest moments in music

  • Ohhhhhhhhhhh...

    This is...So Good!

  • I bought this dvd, my brain exploded

  • Where can you buy it?

  • I got in on ebay new for like 17 bucks, Just look up shawn lane paris

  • he played a piece from Maria at 6.22... so kool

  • Can anyone tell me what pickups are those ? Just dont say they are EMG's coz they aint

  • Lace Sensors though the production model are low gain Dimarzios.

  • 3:41....

  • This is too fucking cool

  • ...................sick......................

  • and btw that kind of percussion is known as gatam its an Indian instrument

  • its soo hard to play with this kind of music ,,the bass really helps a lot there it connects the eastern beats with the western solo

  • Magical - I never get tired of watching this clip.

  • flawless! The tone is so beautiful!

  • If there were to be only one purpose for the creation of the word brilliant, it would be this moment in time. Truly a god among men.

  • I don't think you need to tab this music. It's an improvised solo (a good one if you ask me!) SO, if you want to honor Shawn's memory, do yourself a favor and start doing you OWN thing, exploring your OWN music and discovering your OWN phrasing. Luck!

  • I really like Shawn's clean tone here...

  • its easy he turns down the tone on a profesional clean setting with some reverb

  • I meant his slides and other mannerisms as well... But thank you very much for your advice, I will surely "attempt" his settings now :).

  • thats more than just reverb bud

  • this is the best Lane....well amongst other bests

  • lol this is beyond amazing

  • EVEN YOU MIGHT HAVE TROUBLE ? and who the fu... are you ? I bet you woudn't play 1/8 of this material...

  • LOL. Chill out. I never said I could play any of it, but I could transcribe it. You hear a note, you remember the note, you move on. You can write it down if you need to (with Shawn, I would probably write it down as I went). Come on, as a jazz musician, transcription is part of learning. And believe me, once you've transcribed Coltrane, NO guitarist poses any real challenges for transcription. Why does it matter who I am? Transcription isn't that hard. Just born with a good ear or something?

  • lovely bebop lines at 1:16 on

  • Words fail me miserably when I try to describe the genius of this piece. I can play this on loop from now till the day I die.

  • hey does anybody know what that half spherical percussive instrument that one dude is rocking on is called? i saw the secondary percussionist from toubab krewe playing one and it was sick. i need one for sure......

  • it's called a ghatam....

    as in (pronc.) GHH-A-TAMM...

  • When I bought this DVD a couple of years ago, I was in Awe. I've heard allot of guitar music, but this is the spiritual zenith of any guitar solo that exists. Shawn's solo makes you feel like your on drugs without being on drugs. Thank God for this profesionally recorded video, because there isn't many of Shawn.

  • Icredible, can you tell me what is the name of dvd,or where to get it.

  • It's called Paris. Just google Shawn Lane and Paris.

  • does any1 have tabs for this ?

  • rofl i think that is a stupid question ^^

  • it is but at least he's trying

  • Just transcribe it! Why does everyone ask for tabs!? Work on your ear and you'll be writing your own tabs. Although, I think even I might have trouble with some of this. It would take a lot of starting and stopping to pick out all those notes.

  • I'm with you. I feel like people are getting lazy and they don't really want to learn the music, they just want to play it. Tabs only go so far... at a certain point they hinder ones musical development

  • This is very true. Use your ear folks. As a musician it is the most precious thing we have

  • Seconded. Tabs will show you how to play the music, sure. But the essence simply wont be there. Its one thing to learn someones music, and another entirely to DISCOVER it, to listen to it and put down and play what YOU are hearing. Its like taking a picture of the spectacular Niagara Falls on your cell phone, bringing it home to a friend and showing him, then saying "See? Now you have truly experienced Niagara Falls!". Haha. Hardly.

  • It's more rewarding to figure stuff out yourself, too.

  • True, but I don't have time for that..... working full time, recording, and working on technique take up a lot of time...Tabs help me very much with playing other people's stuff.I'd rather spend more time on coming up with my own stuff...But yes, people who can quickly figure out stuff by ear are true greatness.

  • No one compares to Shawn Lane, and I don't think anyone ever will. Absolutely amazing.

  • I think you are sooo right on...SHAWN ALONE RULES, NO ONE EVEN COMES CLOSE! RIP great one

    u r misd

  • yeah....not yet at lest

you know out of the zillion people that he inspires at lest ONE will come close to him

  • guys listen to frank gambale, that guy is very awsome too

  • Wow, I believe music like this actually exists. At the start i was completely unimpressed but by the end I had this feeling of "My god, I've never heard anything like this in my life and it feels incredible." That's good nectar.

  • Why do all the good guitarists have to die?!?! Lane, Rhoads, Dimebag, Schuldiner; all great men taken long before their time...

  • probably the most tasteful improv I've ever heard in my life.

  • Music for the heavens. Shawn, we miss you.

  • He could just pick up a guitar and id be amazed. R.I.P Shawn you are THE master of music theory and phrasing

  • Shawn Lane...Jonas Hellborg...Onstage with some masterful Indian percussionists including Selvaganesh Vinayakram...I have just peacefully, blissfully died and gone to absolute musical heaven.

  • He truley is the best guitarist I've ever seen, he has amazing Jazzy tone.

  • The immortal SHAWN LANE man his phrasing always strikes my nerve simply brilliant

  • There are so many talented musicians who have gone so early.Shawn Lane is irreplacable. He is one of few true guitarists in history.

  • is shawn using emgs?

  • I think he's using DiMarzio

  • take a look at :38, they look like emgs

  • He is using Lace Sensors. You can't quite tell on this vid, but on the DVD you can see the writing. Plus, he endorsed them, and had posters/adverts of him done.

  • If This is not redefine what someone can do with a guitar like jimmy did than wtf it is ?Godly music
