We gotta get some one in the film documentary business to do a 2+ hour piece on this genius of the modern electric guitar. Shawn Lane beyond any doubt was THE musical genius of our time. All of his recorded data on musical theory, interpretation of sound and melody, and technical ability must be gathered, cataloged, preserved, taught at all levels of musical education, and presented on film for the masses. DON'T LET HIM FADE INTO HISTORY!!! MAKE THE FILM! WRITE THE BIO!
Shredding is running up and down scales in a linear fashion. Lane never did that. Well he rarely did if ever.
He was a virtuoso musician, and should be remembered as such. His speed is something any one can attain through much practice. His music however was one of a kind.
@Element404 I agree with everything you said aside from the last statement. I have (as of now) never heard a guitarist who has the technical ability Shawn does. Some come close, but you can hear the strain, the difficulty they have playing at those speeds and it comes across as slight mistakes or dynamic issues. For Shawn, playing ten notes in a second or playing one in a second both sound equally effortless for him.
@Dooality It's not his speed that impresses me, it's his music. It's how he phrases his lines; how he chooses his notes. He's always melodic.
And the reason that not many have reached his fluidity, is because it takes a lot of practice. When he was 10, he was playing fast. However, he was sloppy. It took him several years of technical practice to clean up his playing. He wasn't playing like this over night. Every one's, "this is impossible to do" attitude has to do with why no one can.
@Element404 I think the the amazing part about Shawn's speed was that he never had to develop it. Like you said, he had to clean it up, but the pure speed was always there. That almost never happens.
shawn lane is the best guitarist ever. period. nobody has the technique, phrasing, melody, and speed shawn did. he is unsurpassable in almost every way.
He was a machine but he also had so much soul and that is what sets him above the other guitar players that he is compared to. Shawn's legend only grows and if you don't like Shawn keep it to yourself, because honestly i doubt he could care less what you think.
For anyone who's interested in this Shawn Lane DVD. Also check out Good People In Times of Evil and Icon. They're the albums they recorded together. Icon was the last Shawn Lane album released before his death, I believe. Good People In Times of Evil is one of my favorite albums of all time and I highly recommend it.
My god how versatile is this guy? He rattles off classical piano concertos, indian classical music improvisations and composes (imo) brilliant pieces like gray pianos flying which exhibit so many different stylistic features with scant regard for typical human limitations. A true god amongst men.
its music like this that should get the millions of views but america is tone deaf hopefully one day the world will change and music like this will serfuss again
3:52 , 5:36 and 6:20 - best music ever to grace the history of recorded music.
I also love you guys for not caring about Shawn's speed and just caring about the beauty of his music. God bless you all and thanks very much for the upload :)
jbeck,is referring that Shawn is playing pentatonic scales in their modal sequences. Just as in western scales,or any other for that matter, the "sequence" of where he starts on the first, second, third note, etc.. Pentatonic has its modes.
Yeah, Shawn is definitely a diamond in the rough, but you people have to consider the skill of all the other musicians performing here. This is absolutely beautiful.
"There will never be another Shawn Lane, just like there will never be another Van Gogh. It wasn't the speed, the choice of notes, the touch, the tone, the vibrato, the fact that he could blaze on piano, his photographic memory, his superior intellect, his oblique sense of humor, his childlike kindness... it was all of these things-plus that elusive quality that placed him in a strange area located halfway between dream and reality." ~ Alex Masi... great guitarist/Lane student
yes, this is a track from the DVD paris ( 2001 ) you should be able to get it from amazon fairly cheaply. the song is from the jonas hellborg cd good people in times of evil ( highly recommended ). this band - lane, hellborg, and the vinaykram brothers is availble on the cd icon ( also highly recommended ) enjoy!
Yeah haha, it can be strange at first. But you'll find something inside of you enjoys it. It calms you, makes you feel at peace at whatever point you are in your life. I would have a very hard time understanding why anybody would ever truly hate this music.
Amazing!! Im shocked that Shawn didnt transcend his body and become pure sprit during this performance, because the music is surely that. Om Shanti Shawn!!
I am standing in the universe with vibes of music surrounding me.....purity......shawn lane is the greatest six string player I have ever heard........so melodical!!!
Just try to ignore this dude. Sounds like a random troll on a Friday night. I would know, it's awesome flaming deceased guitarists rather than hanging out with your friends or chasin' girls. ;)
shawn lane actually does through a lot of pentatonic motifs into his playing. especially when he is emulating classical indian music, which uses a lot of pentatonic scales.
Actually Shawn uses pentatonic all the time, but not in the conventional way. Shifts the five note patterns forward or back to match the mode he wants. So he might actually be using different notes, but they're still in the proper scale and such. Just an ingenious way of working with pentatonics.

When I bought this DVD a couple of years ago, I was in Awe. I've heard allot of guitar music, but this is the spiritual zenith of any guitar solo that exists. Shawn's solo makes you feel like your on drugs without being on drugs. Thank God for this profesionally recorded video, because there isn't many of Shawn.
Just transcribe it! Why does everyone ask for tabs!? Work on your ear and you'll be writing your own tabs. Although, I think even I might have trouble with some of this. It would take a lot of starting and stopping to pick out all those notes.
I'm with you. I feel like people are getting lazy and they don't really want to learn the music, they just want to play it. Tabs only go so far... at a certain point they hinder ones musical development
Seconded. Tabs will show you how to play the music, sure. But the essence simply wont be there. Its one thing to learn someones music, and another entirely to DISCOVER it, to listen to it and put down and play what YOU are hearing. Its like taking a picture of the spectacular Niagara Falls on your cell phone, bringing it home to a friend and showing him, then saying "See? Now you have truly experienced Niagara Falls!". Haha. Hardly.
True, but I don't have time for that..... working full time, recording, and working on technique take up a lot of time...Tabs help me very much with playing other people's stuff.I'd rather spend more time on coming up with my own stuff...But yes, people who can quickly figure out stuff by ear are true greatness.
Wow, I believe music like this actually exists. At the start i was completely unimpressed but by the end I had this feeling of "My god, I've never heard anything like this in my life and it feels incredible." That's good nectar.
Shawn Lane...Jonas Hellborg...Onstage with some masterful Indian percussionists including Selvaganesh Vinayakram...I have just peacefully, blissfully died and gone to absolute musical heaven.
He is using Lace Sensors. You can't quite tell on this vid, but on the DVD you can see the writing. Plus, he endorsed them, and had posters/adverts of him done.
Is this on a DVD? Does anyone know where I can buy this? And if not, where I can get it at all in high quality? D:

Pentatonic modal ideas are very fun!
I use this frequently as well.
It gives you the ability to play modal runs and licks that don't sound so much like scale suicides or exercises.
That is why I use it anyways... just cause it makes it so I don't have to think so hard to get a good sound. :3

It's more rewarding to figure stuff out yourself, too.

Why do all the good guitarists have to die?!?! Lane, Rhoads, Dimebag, Schuldiner; all great men taken long before their time...

He is using Lace Sensors. You can't quite tell on this vid, but on the DVD you can see the writing. Plus, he endorsed them, and had posters/adverts of him done.
