@Ndubzm8 Do you keep them on regular 6 foot leads? Not the flexi-leads, the ones that extend. You have to have them on leashes when they are not in the house or fenced yard, if you have one. If you don't keep them on leashes you will not be able to train them.

@ninja7101 If he likes to bark you can train him easily. If he really doesn't bark much it will be a bit more difficult. You can google 'teach your dog to bark on command' and there are several good methods given.

In this instance we know that Ozzie is part chow but his blue tongue was just an additional indicator. He has a lot of physical and temperment traits that are much stronger evidence of his Chow genes.

He is a sweetie, thank you. Yes we taught him to speak (bark) on command. Dogs, like people, have individual talents. You just have to identify what they are good at and build on that. You can teach a dog that doesn't ever bark to speak but it will take a while & won't be fun for the person or the dog. But if that same dog has a tendency to stand up, the person and the dog will have a fun time teaching/learning to 'walk' or 'dance'.

Yes. There are a few breeds that have blue tongues. Chow-Chow, Sharpei, Shiba Inu, Akita are the most common. However, it is not uncommon for any dog to have black spots on there tongue.

Listen to your parents. They are right. Dogs live between 10 & 19 years so you have to consider that as well. There are a lot of things you can do to get to be around dogs. I'm not sure how old you are but you can work or volunteer at your local animal shelter, or a vets office. Most boarding kennels welcome volunteers to help with playtime & walks over the holidays.

I agree with what TickledDog says. Firstly the dog himself costs a lot of money, then comes food, bed, toys, vet bills, insurance, the dog WILL need operations and they costs asmuch as the dog does. Most peoples do the good ol' mistake to assume pets are like toys; You buy it, cuddle with it and leave it alone when you're tired of it. But having a pet IS like having a baby, and I'm speaking of good experience. Your sparetime goes mostly to the dog, or else you're doing it wrong

Ozzie is a German Shepherd/Chow mix. But our old girl, who looked like Oz, was a German Shepherd/Yellow Lab mix. Some times you have to wait until they get a little bigger before the characteristics stand out a little better.

I have a purebred GSD and if I say "sit", he lays down. If I say "lay down", he lays down. If I point at the floor/ground, he lays down. If I have a treat, all I hafta do is look at him for half a second and he lays down. He's also 5, and he also knows "MOVE" and "LET GO OF ME!!!!!". Don't really need him to do anything else.
