two words baby, "Harbor Freight", the pittsburgh pro series tools ain't half bad and for dirt cheap. And they are lifetime warranty, just bring it back if it every breaks and get a new one off the shelf and not a rebuilt one like some of the higher end tools.
@Johnnysshop Lol yeah good old sears, You know they have gotten even more strict on their return policy when it comes to craftsman tools, I went there awhile back to return a broken Die, they told me since it comes in a set and not sold individually that they could not help me. Bull crap, Autozone, or harbor freight woudl just open a packaged set and got the new one no questions asked. Im not harping on Craftsman tools they are decent, just not the 1/4 ratchet, those are absolute junk!
@Johnnysshopi have been getting my tools from harbor freight. I would also recommend "Duralast" tools from autozone, They are fairly cheap and are made with awesome quality. Their ratchets in particular are exactly the same as snap on's, i swear by it. The Tooth count, the socket retention its all the same just a diffrerent name thats all. They are a perfect copy, Why pay over a 100 for the snap on when the Duralast is like 20 bucks now. Go buy one and you will be glad you did trust me!!!
@PUREAAMERICAN I actually had a set and couldn't get used to them. I liked them for certain situations but found myself flexing the head when not needed.
I love my set. I bought Sae and Metric sets and they are tough as hell. I'm training to be an A.s.e. tech and I currently work on Ford diesel fleet vehicles and fork lifts and it seems like with the bigger nuts and bolts that have more torque applied, that you'd snap a Gearwrench. Nope! I highly recommend em as well!
I don't believe they (GearWrench) have a lifetime warranty. And why do they skip over a few sizes? Sears Craftsman does have a smiliar set but with a lifetime warranty. Proto and Snap On brands are the best and you can choose any and all the sizes you want. GearWrench are not made in the U.S.A.
@claytungsten They actually do have a lifetime warranty. They kinda claim to be made in the USA but I believe it was discovered they are actually Taiwan. Go figure. As for the sizing skip, no clue.. Kinda annoying.
@Johnnysshop This is one of their "budget" sets. It doesn't have all the sizes, but covers most of the bases. Go for the 9602 or 9509 to get a set without any missing in that range. They also make "completer" sets that will add the upper range to one of these sets. They just offer different packages, don't worry.
if you go and buy the missing # metric ones like the 18=11/16 16=5/8 14=9/16 13=1/2 and the 11=7/16 9=3/8 8=5/16 you will find you can all most go with out all but a select few s.a.e tools
@spartansfan5 Actually they aren't bad at all. I've been using some of their side cuts, needle nose, and some screw drivers. They also have a lifetime warranty..
Snap on broke? I'm shocked to hear that one. The only Snap on I've broken is a small screwdriver. I don't buy them much anymore since the prices are so high but I love their tools.
Ive seen tons of Snap-On stuff break, it almost always happens when the tech is using a tool that is too small, like trying to break loose a rusted bolt with a gear wrench and cheater pipe when he should be using a breaker bar. Then the Snap-On dealer interogates you when you want to warrenty the tool. Ive switched to mid-grade tools like Craftsman, Husky, Kobalt, Gearwrench, and Stanley as they are cheaper but are tested to the same ANSI standard as the Snap-On tools and no hassle returns!
I've had the same issue. Snap-On will replace them eventually but it takes weeks. I broke a screwdriver once, probably using it for something I shouldn't but Sears wouldn't have even asked me a single question. The Snap-On guy (truck) didn't want to replace it at all..
I've been using Snap On for nearly 35 yrs and have had one tool break, a 1/4 ratchet which turned out just needed to be serviced and rebuilt. I don't blame Snap On for questioning these idiots that grossly misuse and abuse their tools and then make a claim, which are not and should not be covered.
I agree, like I said I probably did misuse the tool at the time (I was 18 or so). It's just nice that Craftsman doesn't ask ya anything. At the same time I've never had a 3/8 ratchet from Snap On fail but I have from Craftsman.
Well a ratchet is a wearing item and will always fail given enough time no matter what the brand is, but because of those who misuse the tools it has become difficult to warrenty tools that fail from wear like ratcheting combo wrenches and ratchets. Thats why I swiched from Snap-On within 2 years of using them.
@Johnnysshop lol i was talking about this today with a bubby of mine,i broke one so many time i threw it away, i kept breaking a 18mm 3/8s drive so many times i gave up,i tossed it.i called my indy tool guy he sold me a 18mm gearwrench socket, i ve had it for 3 years now, maybe i had a snapon sockets made on a friday at 5,or a monday at 8am,lol eitherway that was the last time i was on a snapon truck, and take home more money to ,blessing i tell ya
@mrwhit1 Im a cummins mechanic and Ive never broke my snap-on ratcheting wrenches, and I like craftsman ratcheting wreches better than gearwrench. If you broke them get them replaced for free on the snap-on truck. Im sure with gearwrench, if they break you have to send them in the mail to get it replaced, and it takes like a month to get the new one. Ive seen alot of gearwrenches fuck up to ware they won't ratchet anymore.
@dave0z96 i buy from a indepenant tool guy,hes got a replacement on the truck 98 percent of the time.snapon is way overpriced ,i belive in making money for my family ,not for the snapon mafia. gear wrench is the best for the money hands down, ive even fixed a few cummins with them to.whats your overhead ?
@mrwhit1 Understandable, Im younger 26 and single so I can afford snap-on. But I like buying american made tools to support the U.S. economy so I would probably go with craftsman if I could'nt afford snap-on, but they do cost a little more than gearwrench. Family comes first though .
@dave0z96 i been thinking about buying some armstrong tools they are american tools, they make hand tools for matco,i always liked matco but they are high also, armstrong tools look great,i find out the price and let you know,if you get a chance look at their website ,
during huricane gustav i was usin em wit a trashpump to put the pipes an all the sudden the part that ratchets wouldnt ratchet it would jsut spin free an then fell out
its with any of them any brand. they all break fast and strip easy. good for ligth stuff and tight spaces but cant take a hammer to them! they are for speed orientated scenarios
Those are pretty cool, I have never seen a regular wrench that had a socket wrench action in it. It seems these days more and more tools are getting the rachet action in them. Anyway, there pretty cool, thanks for reviewing them!
