Its funny how Linux gets judge how it cant run windows native apps LOL. I thought the video was funny because I did not take it seriously. ever tried to run a native linux app on windows? it does not work. Some Linux apps are ported to windows mainly office suites. Linux works fine if you have compatible hardware. it does not have to be old hardware. their are a very few programs that have been ported from windows to Linux they work flawlessly. all Os have their problems none is perfect.
@wooka64 so true. A friend of mine kept telling me I'm wasting my money on building a nice pc because Linux is made for old hardware. That's completely false. And why would the support new hardware for LInux?? duh. well anyways, your getting my thumbs up because you made complete sense. later on.
I gave Linux OS so many chances, I tried almost every single distro out there. But it keeps dragging me down on the one and only problem:
I need to use the programs I use in Windows (or that are designed for Windows). WINE, Crossover or whatever apps there are for allowing such a task all failed, and they failed HARD. And it's a shame because honestly? I like Linux OS, I really do. Well at least I have a tough netbook that I have specifically for Linux, but I could never use it as a primary.
linux is not for the non-computer geeky crowd. doesn't really feel easy to use for a person who knows nothing about programming and stuff, not for someone who uses computer just to get his work done in the office and for a lot of fun and entertainment.
Those people who dislike Linux are those who try using it and failed because Linux was too much for their little minds. Dude, migration to Linux is not easy but not impossible, give it a try, understanding how it works and then you're gonna love Linux.
@MrTabby5000 of course just linux is painfull. linux is just a kernel ( a program), you should try Gnu/linux that is the complete OS. of course maybe you dont know What Im talking about because you just play in a computer.. be a man and use a real Os.
@12alar1132078oktia in fact is really easy migrate to Gnu/linux.. but what you said is true. now a days Gnu/linux is really easy to use and people should see that.. GNu/linux is just awesome... :-D
Well I am 14 and I am better with Linux and Mac os X and Windows than you I bet. I works great for me. AND I AM A GAMER ( not alot of games). Vista wasn't good no matter what machine you put it on.
Im confused, i installed linux mint on my Q9400 with 4GB OCZ ram, 32 bit o/s picked up 3.9 GB of that ram with the help of PAE, runs like shit off a shovel (that means fast), runs HL2 and Quake 4, office 2007 and no problems, wireless works flawlessly, windows is in a nice safe virtual box - no command lines used. How it is that so many people fail at even setting up a linux box astounds me.
@hellertytus u are poor becouse u are using linux HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA HEY poor i can give you 1 cent and for u u will be RICH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA POOR DICK
@iron888888 are talking about money ? LOL.... I have a lot if you wanna know that but you still sucks... you are a poor skill man maybe that should be the videos's name
@hellertytus Believe it or not I actually own a license and CD (DVD for Vista and 7) for every version of Microsoft Windows that ever existed. Even all the way back to "Windows 1.0".
Honestly though I can't stand using Microsoft Windows. Granted its gotten a LOT better and the BSOD is rare but the CPU threading and memory management still sucks. I don't even know where to begin with the inherit security problems.
Ugh, there is much, much misinformation regarding GNU/Linux, and let's start with one thing.
Linux is a kernel. Not an operating system. GNU/Linux is the GNU operating system running atop the Linux kernel. Still with me?
Second: It's not Windows.
Third: It's not Windows.
So if everything you learned about operating a computer came from experience with Windows, the only thing that would "suck" would be the following reality: you don't know everything, and you have a LOT to learn.
well i'vw switched my laptops to mepis linux which is pretty great. the only problems that i have come across are third party proprietary driver issues which are a reflection on hardware companies not on linux. pretty much the same issue with ubuntu or any of the other ones. but, you find that problem with windows 7 too on any laptop older than 2006..
if drivers are not made by the manufacturers then good luck getting hardware to work. bottom line linux needs support too.
I agree actually. I just installed ubuntu today, and this shits pretty horrible. Installing a simple program is such a fucking chore, even with the GUI. The wireless network drivers seem to be pretty jank, since my internet randomly disconnects. I really dont see why so many people love this. Just seems like another jank OS trying to compete with Winblows and Macs. I hate to say it but im almost excited to go back to windows =/.
@RiiMashuu Ubuntu's distribution does not represent the whole of GNU/Linux, and is a rather poor implementation of it. (Ubuntu is notorious for packaging unstable software releases in "stable" distributions.) Unfortunately, many people try such a junk distribution (like Ubuntu), and walk away thinking that all forms of GNU/Linux are the same as what they tried.
You also need to realize that every OS does some things differently. Different, doesn't necessarily suck. You just need to learn.
First, what the hell is "an a apyware"? Did you mean spyware? In either case, AVG is neither of those.
Second, "40% of games can be run on Linux"? WTF? Where did you get that number from?
Even if it were true, I bet you would need to pay for Cedega. You wouldn't get half the graphical performance of Windows, since DirectX is native to Windows. And you most likely wouldn't be able to play on any ATI graphics card.
And damn, 40% isn't that much. I will take 100% anytime.
Making it work involved ticking it on a list of available software and clicking "apply changes" (at least on Ubuntu). On distros where it isn't in the repo, you download 1 file from Adobe and putting it in .mozilla/plugins.
sinoman2 i find it hard to believe your not a "computer beginner" when you can't even get flash to work. Even if its not point and click in package manager like TweenkPL said(which it is under debian distros) its simply a matter of either downloading libs to run 32 bit on 64, which simply requires maybe four mouse clicks. Shit you can just download the plugin and move it to the firefox plugins directory. But you already knew that correct? After all you are not a "computer beginner"
I really hate to brag, but consider this: I've written a semi-functional bare-bones MMORPG server in Java from scratch but I couldn't get Flash to work on 64 bit Linux. Does that tell you something?
@MrTabby5000 Dude, seriously you realize both mac and windows os 'es can download from the internet, if you didnt know they can also burn cdroms ha ha
Suppose you have an old laptop and you want to use it as a cheap media player on your home network, would you buy Windows XP and try to run it, or buy a whole new computer? I'd rather just take my old junk machine and install a small linux distro and have a nice media player.

(I'm not hating on Windows; I love Windows, but every OS has its place in the world and being racist won't help you get many friends.)
@ComputerGeek000 How am I being racist? If you have 64 mb of ram you need a new computer, end of story. There are computers out there with 125 times more RAM for $700 and even that's using half the ram sockets. Most decent dual channel motherboards can support 250 times that much. Also, you can run windows dos,1, 2.1x, 3.1x, 95, 98, 2000, and XP with 64 mb. And for Ubuntu the minimum specs are 128 MB of ram. Look it up, and I mean that in a serious way not a mean way.
@ligerman30 You are being racist against the race of Linux-based operating systems. I do have a new computer, but if I want a server (for example) I don't want to go buy a new one with Windows or be stuck with Windows NT server. If you read my first comment you would know that XP on 64 MB of RAM is useless (I have personal experience) and anything older is unsafe and not supported (what's a good web browser for Win 98? Not Firefox, Chrome, or IE.) Ubuntu is not the only Linux-based OS, like...
@ligerman30 (continued)...XP is not the only Windows OS. Ubuntu is great if you want a nice desktop, but if you want something a bit faster there's Xubuntu. If you have a computer that's a bit older there's Puppy Linux. If you want a server there's FreeBSD (Unix, I know). Going with Windows requires new hardware or a slow and/or outdated OS. Going with *nix will get you a modern OS that will run on almost any hardware.
BTW I only listed a few of the MANY linux-based OSes.
No...It doesnt actually advertise every 5 minutes...In fact, It doesnt advertise at all. And there isnt "AVG Pro Edition" Its just called, The full edition. Get your facts right mate
AVG are for people who have common sense, and know they dont need to spend a load on virus protection programs to get a decent firewall. I've been using AVG free for 4 years now and I havent got a single virus. Or maybe its just because I have a girlfriend and you need Porn websites to get you going for a good night
It does block virus's Otherwise my computer would be slow as crap and nothing would be working, But everything is working fine and I've had no problems.
linux is the best os out there no one can compete with it though many have tried microsoft actually had a law suit years ago for claim making false statements and everything new in windows was done in linux first. multi tab internet browser was in firefox which was and is still the default internet browser for linux had it years before internet explorer
LOL That is to funny! I love how every one wants to pick an OS and down the other, Hell I run VISTA,XP and Fedora.. And to anyone out there that says one is better then the other, Well you just need to learn how to run another OS, And you will se how every OS has its place and strong points..
My 2 cents anyway..
And that water thing is cool as hell, Im working on getting Vista to do that rite now.. :)
Windows OS is the biggest mistake in the f**ing computer world...So do you have Winbowz - your computer is infected by default :D - to save him,use Linux/UNIX ;)
yeah. I tried to ge google chrome, but when I got to the download page, i entered my email address so that they would notify me when it was released for linux :D
Google Chrome is not written for Linux therefore it doesn't work with Linux. Although if you are smart you could get it to work. I've tried Chrome, it really isn't anything special. FireFox for the win. Open Office is a heck of a lot better than Word. Why would you need WinRAR on Linux? Same thing with Camtasia. Don't blame Linux because it doesn't work. The programmers that made it didn't make it work with Linux, it is their fault. I've used free screen recorders that have the same features.
Linux has setups. I know cause thats what Synaptic Package Manager does. Its even easier than that, you chose a package to install, and click install and no need for process of the exe(or dmg) setup. it just installs the app then a menu icon and desktop icon is created an you can run it without resarting your computer.
You actually can open anything in linux dumb-butt. The is this new thing called Wine. its a windows emulator. so everthing in windows is compatible with linux. Plus, don't say "duh", makes you sound stupid.
Actualy I can set up Linux, Windows Vista, Windows Xp anything it's easy once you know what to do, so don't commecnt and say something like that when you don't know if it's true or not. I have installed Linux it was just my opinion about Linux.
The VM won't ever run as well as the proper thing. Often very VERY buggy and in games like COD4 and such the fps *on my computer anyway* on max went from 60 to 36
Major drop
But quake is open source so thats on linux :D Most played game on linux probably
Oh and half life 2 works with help from sprite scripts

ive instaled linux a week ago... nothing special yet.. actualy its a big bother cus i have no software for it and to install shit its like its made for geecks!! freacks that love codesss!! bastardss! i just wana do shit on my pc!! I FUCKING HATE LINUX WINDOWS AND MAC!!! FUCK EM ALL THERE SHIT!!! they neet to get together and make a super sistem!!

I wouldn't say linux sucks but there's nothing really good about it I don't know why all these people are like "omfg it's linux" so what?. I'm downloading vista gamers edition free! that fucks linux well up!.
you have to pay more then $100 for the basic vista. lots more people hack window not only that they give you viruse. linux has non.and yes you probaly have more suff for window but its almost all juck you have to pay for. window has so meny error and shit. and don't get me started on mac
you can get viruses after you get it. it not free inless its elegal. window may be abit better for games will that after they had to mess things over for linux. you have no life if you do is play games all day
Oh well, there probably is SOME virus for linux but....if you dont have protection on windows you end up with a useless system (this happened to my brothers some time ago).
But if we look at about every other os...that just doesn't happen!
offcourse..you're right. But what you say doesnt really have to do with what I say. How good the security is doesnt matter, as most viruses are for windows.
"it also has more hackers" Are you saying that more people hack USING Windows, or are you saying that more people hack INTO windows?
Because seriously, if you know about hacking (and I'm talking about HACKING, not about stupid BATCH files), then you'd have to be stupid to use Windows.
Im not ignorant. I use both Windows and Linux on separate machines. On Linux no self-executable files, thats why there are no viruses, ofcourse there are some exeptions, but for basic-standart user there are no viruses definately...
Microsoft Cant Read Linux Code Good So Thay Mad Shit Up And Fucked It Up On The Xbox 360 Microsoft Put Linux On It To Save Money But Linux Sued Microsoft & One
And Linux is only for show offs, exactly what do you do on linux that makes it so bad ass? unless you develope software or code, linux is just a free OS that geeks like to use to show off to PC users that they actually figured out one of its 300 variations of the OS. The only exception of acceptable Linux us in the IT world would be in networking applications, home users should stay away.
You don't get it. We use Linux because its safe, fast, and free as in freedom. Oh, and there are plenty of apps for the home user. Don't even go there.
Then stop clicking on every damn flash/java game you see that pops up. How bout turning on your firewall once in awhile or getting behind a router instead of plugging directly into your modem. Want to talk free, SpyBot S&D virus scanner is free to download and use. Scan for viruses at least every week. If you adhere to a few safety precautions you can save yourself that reformat every three months.
I don't and I have a very good router Firewall based on Linux. I shouldn't have to worry about getting a virus by googling. Thats pathetic. Way things are now, I don't need any freeware antivirus.
A very good router based on linux? I wouldn't go that far. Any router that's not fully compatible with xbox live isn't a good router nuff said. I used a linux based router for awhile.
Well I had an old pc lying around and turned it into a homebrew linux router. Dont get me wrong, It's great how it lets you install a lot of useful programs for managing the system but but I got tired of always switching between routers to use xbox live. It's a great soloution though for schools and SOHO businesses.

The GUI didn't bring anything usefully new for years, dependencies are still annoying, flash and video hardware support are bad jokes...
But I prefer to that to the any perishable windows version, which with his malware and never ending registry bloating must be reinstalled every year.
It's a matter of choosing a cross to carry.

And virus? download FUCKING AVG, it's not hard

AVG are for cheap bastards who cant afford REAL anit-virus programmes
The10TonTank 2 years ago
AVG are for people who have common sense, and know they dont need to spend a load on virus protection programs to get a decent firewall. I've been using AVG free for 4 years now and I havent got a single virus. Or maybe its just because I have a girlfriend and you need Porn websites to get you going for a good night
BlackPheonix81 2 years ago
youve been using AVG for four years and didnt get a single virus, really? wanna know why? becouse AVG sucks and dosnt block any viruses maybe?
and braging about girlfriends is just another proof that you´re a looser.
The10TonTank 2 years ago
It does block virus's Otherwise my computer would be slow as crap and nothing would be working, But everything is working fine and I've had no problems.

linux is the best os out there no one can compete with it though many have tried microsoft actually had a law suit years ago for claim making false statements and everything new in windows was done in linux first. multi tab internet browser was in firefox which was and is still the default internet browser for linux had it years before internet explorer
bludstem 3 years ago
I think you'll find the first tabbed browser was actually opera.
It's multiplatform though, and it is true that M$ steal linux ideas, but they all steal ideas. It's all good.

I wouldn't doubt it. I heard Google was working on an OS that is based on Linux, not sure though.
powerman2442 3 years ago
yeah. I tried to ge google chrome, but when I got to the download page, i entered my email address so that they would notify me when it was released for linux :D
AWvids 3 years ago
Google Chrome is not written for Linux therefore it doesn't work with Linux. Although if you are smart you could get it to work. I've tried Chrome, it really isn't anything special. FireFox for the win. Open Office is a heck of a lot better than Word. Why would you need WinRAR on Linux? Same thing with Camtasia. Don't blame Linux because it doesn't work. The programmers that made it didn't make it work with Linux, it is their fault. I've used free screen recorders that have the same features.
powerman2442 3 years ago
i don't see any differance. But i think that 8.1 supports more stuff that 8.04....maybe? idk.
pinhedi 3 years ago
cool. I use Ubuntu 8.1 and Gentoo. Pigdin supports Windows Live I think. It supports a whole crap load of IM clients.

actually the linux paste shortcut is middle click or click both mouse buttons at once. not very hard. And yes. your welcome
pinhedi 3 years ago
Linux has setups. I know cause thats what Synaptic Package Manager does. Its even easier than that, you chose a package to install, and click install and no need for process of the exe(or dmg) setup. it just installs the app then a menu icon and desktop icon is created an you can run it without resarting your computer.
pinhedi 3 years ago
only those who don't try to use linux see it as a hard OS to use. My friend who has never touched a pc especially linux. Can use Ubuntu with ease.
pinhedi 3 years ago
You actually can open anything in linux dumb-butt. The is this new thing called Wine. its a windows emulator. so everthing in windows is compatible with linux. Plus, don't say "duh", makes you sound stupid.
pinhedi 3 years ago
actually, linux is compatible with EVERYTHING.if it works on any other OS, it works on linux.
pinhedi 3 years ago
pft... trying shopping for hardware for linux... it sucks bad...

Actualy I can set up Linux, Windows Vista, Windows Xp anything it's easy once you know what to do, so don't commecnt and say something like that when you don't know if it's true or not. I have installed Linux it was just my opinion about Linux.

I've been there before
I don't think its that good of an idea tbh
The VM won't ever run as well as the proper thing. Often very VERY buggy and in games like COD4 and such the fps *on my computer anyway* on max went from 60 to 36

everyone who's like "linux sucks"
The only reason they think that is because their either WAY to stupid to install it (meaning there 10 year old little kids) or they work for microsoft

Apple suck

I only go onto vista for a bit of gaming here and then
But you can do everything you would do on vista pretty much
Internet explorer, Microsoft office, paint, photoshop, steam(not the games)

Linux is better in almost every aspect
Except gaming....

you have to pay more then $100 for the basic vista. lots more people hack window not only that they give you viruse. linux has non.and yes you probaly have more suff for window but its almost all juck you have to pay for. window has so meny error and shit. and don't get me started on mac
coolcorbin 3 years ago
I'm downloading vista gamers edition for free and the best bit is no viruses :).
HackerGuru100 3 years ago
you can get viruses after you get it. it not free inless its elegal. window may be abit better for games will that after they had to mess things over for linux. you have no life if you do is play games all day
coolcorbin 3 years ago
linux does not give you a virus wtf?
rockwizclown 3 years ago
nooooo!
Oh well, there probably is SOME virus for linux but....if you dont have protection on windows you end up with a useless system (this happened to my brothers some time ago).
But if we look at about every other os...that just doesn't happen!
YeahyeahIndeed 3 years ago
well of course, Windows is huge.
Fact is you can write a virus for any OS. You can not disagree with that statement.
Windows not only has more users, it also has more hackers, etc. of course theres gonna be viruses for it.
another fact, most computer hackers and virus writers wouldn't but a mac, ever. Why? too much to explain.
macs are actually less safer look it up.
from all the OS I know of
LINUX > WINDOWS > MAC
in security
rockwizclown 3 years ago
offcourse..you're right. But what you say doesnt really have to do with what I say. How good the security is doesnt matter, as most viruses are for windows.
YeahyeahIndeed 3 years ago
"it also has more hackers" Are you saying that more people hack USING Windows, or are you saying that more people hack INTO windows?
Because seriously, if you know about hacking (and I'm talking about HACKING, not about stupid BATCH files), then you'd have to be stupid to use Windows.
thedevo01 3 years ago
nope.
Videotubelord 3 years ago
whatever your ignorant
rockwizclown 3 years ago
Im not ignorant. I use both Windows and Linux on separate machines. On Linux no self-executable files, thats why there are no viruses, ofcourse there are some exeptions, but for basic-standart user there are no viruses definately...

"If Linux is power, then i have done well"
sambobneil 3 years ago
And Linux is only for show offs, exactly what do you do on linux that makes it so bad ass? unless you develope software or code, linux is just a free OS that geeks like to use to show off to PC users that they actually figured out one of its 300 variations of the OS. The only exception of acceptable Linux us in the IT world would be in networking applications, home users should stay away.
w27y 3 years ago
You don't get it. We use Linux because its safe, fast, and free as in freedom. Oh, and there are plenty of apps for the home user. Don't even go there.

pacaop 3 years ago
Lol this is hilarious! And medihost is right. If you get a $#@%load of viruses on your computer your probably doing some dumb$#@%.
toasterboy19 3 years ago
No not really.. you can get a virus in Windows by just browsing through google.
UbuntuLee 3 years ago
Then stop clicking on every damn flash/java game you see that pops up. How bout turning on your firewall once in awhile or getting behind a router instead of plugging directly into your modem. Want to talk free, SpyBot S&D virus scanner is free to download and use. Scan for viruses at least every week. If you adhere to a few safety precautions you can save yourself that reformat every three months.
toasterboy19 3 years ago
I don't and I have a very good router Firewall based on Linux. I shouldn't have to worry about getting a virus by googling. Thats pathetic. Way things are now, I don't need any freeware antivirus.
UbuntuLee 3 years ago
A very good router based on linux? I wouldn't go that far. Any router that's not fully compatible with xbox live isn't a good router nuff said. I used a linux based router for awhile.
toasterboy19 3 years ago
Yes, I bought it from my service provider.
UbuntuLee 3 years ago
Well I had an old pc lying around and turned it into a homebrew linux router. Dont get me wrong, It's great how it lets you install a lot of useful programs for managing the system but but I got tired of always switching between routers to use xbox live. It's a great soloution though for schools and SOHO businesses.
toasterboy19 3 years ago
lol... Xbox live huh. Sounds like an MS thing.
