First of all, as mentioned in this video, the schools arn't providing a well enough education. So getting more schooling, isn't going to help much, overall. Secondly, Schooling is only an outlet of education, it is not THE education. The most understandable and useful education one can recieve comes from interacting in extreme situations and learning from reality, not from something presented in a classroom.
As a brazilian, I share the pain that american people feels watching this movie. Here in Brasil is much worse than in U.S., and we are a reality of our education. Kids are the future of our world and our countries and is really sad how they're forgotten to the system.
The reason why we are so behind other countries academically is because we educate our whole population...not just the smart ones like most countries do. We give each child a chance to succeed. Now whether that child wants to succeed is up to them and their parents...if that doesn't work then we can use teachers and administrators...if that doesn't work then the child has to take responsibility for their own actions!! Quit blaming others!
@MsJanetWood I flunked a coupla times during grade school and high school, quit and went to work. Finally, after my tour with the US Army in which I had to get a GED...I went to college and graduated. Now, I have a better quality of life and all this despite bad teachers and schools. @welendo yes they report on the kids' family lives. And i see what you're saying about education beginning at home. In my area, parent involvement is pretty much the deciding factor in a student's success. But this film definitely highlights the fact that in most cases in America, a student's success is dependent on BOTH family involvement and good teachers.

has anyone thought that its the teachers or the kids themselves that are not learning.Could it be the media and there surroundings that affects how the grow up. Maybe its that rap videos showing women dry humping for 3 minutes.Or maybe even the teachers that dont give a shit about the kids because all they do is focus on getting paid and the teacher's union to help give them raises in their contracts.I hope these movie focuses on those variables rather than just putting money in a deep hole
Its arrogance & ignorance combined. I've been saying this 4 years of fellow Americans. THey're taught lies/disinfo by peers/parents/media,"news" lies to them & trains them to argue aggressively to support these lies( example; FoxNews/Rush & global warming cultists. They train u to mock any1 innovative & digs out the truth. Look at 9-11, JFK, Bush, war, etc. Many spent yrs researching w/ documented proof & still r mocked. Thats the prob. Its teachers are to blame the most teaching "group think".
College is not right for everybody. STOP PRESSING COLLEGE INTO PEOPLE THAT DO NOT WANT TO GO TO COLLEGE! Miss. Rhee, stop pressing education down our throats!
@ixtoothint Go flip some burger or delivery some pizza if that you want to do for the rest of your live, but stop wining one day cause your body aching.

I think All American kids is being spoiled with the situation, How many of them fall sleep with the science book next to or How many of American Kids fall sleep infront of Xbox lets be honest.
How many kids want to be scientist and how many kids want to be HIP HOP Singer with Big BLINK BLINK, or just try to get Easy money.
How many kids think being SMART is School is a Shame but Smart in Street is COOL. What a Shame, but so true
@VictorNY thats not all true there are some bad teachers and some good teachers it depends on how the students learn if the teacher teaches you how you are better at learning another way than chances are that your not learning a thing. My strongest subject is algebra right now I really cant stand science and any other subject because I get math not science science is just hard unless I take notes and stuff
@pop3498 Well I can see you disagree cause you actually like to study but look at somebody that they in school but they dont like study all they care is how to be famous and rich quick. Not alot of people want to be teacher because not only they dont get paid well they get disrispect all the time by student and parents.
If I am a teacher its just a matter of time between they kill me or I kill them first.
Teacher is just can help you as much you want to be help, They cant wake up dead people :D
Why are we doing things that don't work and won't, like merit pay, charter schools and standardized testing? Why aren't we doing the things Finland and Korea are doing. If we want to be the best we have to start doing the things the best do. Why don't the "Big Brains" see that? Why not do the things that work?
The truth is American schools failed a long time ago.
i can't wait to see this. its amazing how you take your education totally for granted when it's been handed to you. i really don't think there is one thing that is accountable for the poor education in our country. part of it, i think, is the horribly low funding for public education. i heard that the state of California spends more money on it's prison systems than on it's education systems. that is so ironic it's disgusting. no matter how great our teachers are, we need the gov't to step up.
In foreign countries, disruptive students are EXPELLED for good! They are removed from the classroom, leaving the teacher and other students to concentrate on their education.
In America, loud, rude disruptive students are allowed to remain in the classroom, and disrupt the class!
Stop blaming the teachers! Blame the rude, disruptive, hip-hop, gangsta wanna-bees!
Why are other countries successful? BECAUSE THEY RESPECT THEIR TEACHERS! STUDENTS FOLLOW THE RULES!
@aljmdj In the UK, "the Secretary of State's guidance states that exclusion is a serious step. Exclusion, should be used only in response to serious breaches of a school's discipline policy and only after a range of alternative strategies to resolve the pupil's disciplinary problems have been tried and proven to have failed; and where allowing the pupil to remain in school would be seriously detrimental to the education or welfare of other pupils and staff, or of the pupil himself or herself."
@aljmdj "Persistent defiance." is considered a serious offense.
"A pupil can also be expelled for a persistent rebellion against the school rules. This is where the pupil has done many bad things which are not serious when taken on their own, but when taken together, are a serious matter."
@MsJanetWood pk not all kids are going to pay attention be polite and follow orders. Part of being a kid is to explore and have fun. You just made it sound like kids get only one strike and their out.
@MsJanetWood o ok your now just going to be a douche and act like your germatically correct all the time and telling everyone else what they did wrong in their sentences. Do you feel better about yourself? Can you now say o everyone "i taught someone how to use proper grammer over the internet". Well help me pronounce this....... Y O U R B L O C K E D
@phriendlyphool Do you think a POLICE OFFICER working in Oakland, Compton, Watts, or East L.A. has the SAME LEVEL of STRESS and PRESSURE, as cop in Beverly Hills?
Do you think WALKING along RODEO DRIVE is EQUAL to WALKING ALONG 54TH AND CRENSHAW?
A policeman friend of mine went to his wife's Back-to-School-Night. Imagine his surprise when he realized he had PREVIOUSLY ARRESTED half of the parents in attendance!
TIP FOR NEW TEACHERS IN THE INNER-CITY: "DUCK, those aren't FIRECRACKERS!"
@MsJanetWood sorry but there are some horrible teachers out there and teachers definitely need to take some of the responsibility...you can't just wash your hands of it and say that teachers have nothing to do with kids poor education
@phriendlyphool if kids would just stop being cowards in school and acctually pay attention maybe we wouldnt be considered dumb they didnt say it butwe all know thats what they mean
@Therealwhatshethinks sure, kids need to pay attention...there are many factors involved and it can't be pinned down to just one thing that is causing it all
@phriendlyphool yea but if they pay attention and get it the chances are of them remeber the teachers lecturing is 50% and they have to really understand and taking is the best too because it gives you more oppertunities to rember
Why would a teacher want to work at a school where there are behavior problems and no support from parents and get paid the same, if not less, than at a school where there are very little behavior problems and they have to refuse parent volunteers because there are too many of them. It takes a special person to want to work harder and make the same amount of money . Since areas where kids are good and parents are involved get more applicants they can pick the good ones. The bad ones go elsewhere
@tsoenen10 maybe because they want to change the world...maybe they need a challenge in their life and this is the way to do it. Any Joe Shmo can go into a classroom of obedient students and teach. It's those teachers who are willing to step beyond their comfort zones and reach out to those kids with troubled backgrounds that should be applauded, not questioned by some ignorant fool on youtube.
@GoHoosiers12 But they aren't applauded or rewarded. I know first hand that they aren't treated any differently than teachers at high performing schools, if not worse. What I am saying is that unless you are, as I said a 'special person', most people will not want to work harder and get paid the same. If your boss said "hey we're going to cut your pay and your job will be harder, but it's going to make a difference" would you be happy? If so you're better than me. I wasn't questioning anyone.
@tsoenen10 the reward is not one of physical or monetary gain, it's about feeling good about yourself knowing you made enough of a difference in someone's life and hope that they are able to use what you gave them to give themselves a better life. I am a teacher myself and the reason we teachers go into teaching in the first place is not for the money. We all know going into this career field that the money we will make for the work we put in will not match up perfectly but that's not why wedoit
@GoHoosiers12 I understand what you're saying, but if that's the case for most teachers then why aren't they lining up to teach at the underprivilaged schools? If you teach to make a difference no matter how hard it is at those schools I would think the best teachers would be at the schools where they could make the biggest difference right?
@tsoenen10 define "the best teachers". When you enter into your first few years as a teacher no one knows for sure if you're going to be "good" or not. Most teachers, like 85% at both the underpriviledged and hgher performing schools leave within the first 5 years of entering into this profession for many reasons. Those who are "good" typically get tenured within the first 7-10 years and those who aren't as "good" get fired. So once your potential is realized you typically are tenured...
@tsoenen10 ...therefore when you get tenured and deemed a "good teacher" then why would you leave and not stay where you're at? A lot of teachers stay at the school they're at once tenured because they don't want to have to start over at a new school
Michelle Rhee knows what shes talkin about. DC's school system is too broken to even articulate. but schools like SEED can only do so much. we gotta rebuild the school system from the ground up.
This isn't just the "left", "democrat", or Obama's fault, both parties are dumbing down your kids.
It is simple, what would be the easiest way to control a free people like American citizens? You can't just come in and grab power...Obama found this out recently.
You get the American people hooked on drugs, sex, self-destruction, government handouts, destroy the family structure AND dumb them down to the point where they argue for their rights to be taken away. Americans = serf's for life.
This film will make liberals and their union friends all pissy because it's about kids leaving their crappy public schools and wanting to go to good schools.
I'll defer to the teacher that was complaining about the union rules that restricted her from doing the job she wanted to do. She was upset that the charter schools were able to provide time above and beyond if they needed too and she couldn't because of contract her union had her bound too.
It is really sad. Children our the future, and these political hacks are just making it worse.
Find out about Vero Beach High School in Florida, 1987 and what our so called educators are not telling us about what can be done with computers. They have already wasted 20 years.
There are a lot of good teachers trying really hard to do their work, surrounded by the politics of the schools that at time do not support them in discipline and educating the parents who are children from broken families and broken schools too. Yes there are bad teachers, but to say that this is the only problem is wrong.Good teachers need the support of their principals and especailly of the parents, and at times parents are too busy dealing with very personal and social issues of their own.
The reason every country is ahead of us is they have discipline in the system! This is never in discussion. They wear uniforms. Disciplined children!!!! Why can children walk around all day listening to a iPod that has songs full of profanity and that's ok as we know that's a major influence...no discipline. Horrible MTV shows are ok to influence children?????
Teachers have no power and children since the dawn of time dislike school, yet they have to do it cause it is their job to learn how to function in society. In the 1950's we were not failing oh why you say? Teachers were respected and children had disciple/Respect for themselves, teachers and society!!!!! That's why.
It's about accountablity- for everyone. From the student, to the parent, to the teacher, the administrators on campus. You're right, it's not about throwing more $ at it. Throwing more $ at the Welfare system hasn't fixed it. Throwing more $ at the government hasn't fixed it. It's about taking responisblity for your actions. Teach- if you are a teacher. Parent -if you are a parent. Come prepared to learn if you are a student. BUY INTO YOUR EDUCATIONAL PART!
@tabruce1389: Money goes around, you give welfare money and unemployment to the unemployed and they got money to go spend so other people stay employed.
@ABEGAFE Yes, in the case of the school in the trailer, they are depicting the Charter School library. a lot of the failing schools that were closed down, forced a lot of kids to be unable to attend school.
So when charter schools opened where the once failing ones existed, THOUSANDS of parents opted into it for a chance to get their kid to attend. Unfortunately, for the maybe 3000 that were selected, there may have been almost double that number that were not.
@dblreppuken what??!! I really ddint think something as i anti-progressive as that would be happening in the world, let alone America, I guess somehow, somewhere at some point it sounded like a great idea. But I just can't see how.
@ABEGAFE There's just way too many underperforming schools that are completely being closed down without enough coming back up to take their place. In Metro areas like Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, NYC and such, it's easy for one school to close and for kids to be spread to neighboring schools. Not so in the lesser dense communities.
So when a charter school opens, the "fairest" way to select students is through double blind systems, such as the lottery system. It's cruel, and needs fixing :T
Of course, the "fix" usually means needing funding to open more schools and populate them with dependable/qualified faculty, but even that is a problem now. If children are our greatest resource, we're completely decimating it before it has a chance to do anything.
Wow you just completely missed the point. the "fix" has nothing to do with throwing more money at a broken system. The "fix" is throwing away the broken system. The "fix" is throwing away the inept, inadequate, bad teachers and the teacher unions that protect them. Everybody in this country needs to start doing what governor Cristi is doing in New Jersey, and what that woman in Washington is doing. Fight back against the Teachers unions and make them EARN their money.
There is no singular system. There is no national standard for schools, there are only state standards. By the implied powers of the Constitution, it's up to the states themselves to fix each and every district. I agree, we should throw away systems that are simply not working like standardized tests, which are imposed by private boards
Teachers should "Earn" their money, but that means a merit based education structure thus standardized tests and around and around we go

In foreign countries, there is no SOCIAL PROMOTION. If a student fails, he must repeat the entire year . . . AGAIN!
In America, it is literally impossible to "flunk" a student!
A teacher must attend a "special retention meeting", where she must present her case to a panel of experts.
Even, if the team agrees to retain the student, the parents can still veto their decision!
That is how you end up with junior high kids that don't know their time tables and read at a 2nd grade level!

has anyone thought that its the teachers or the kids themselves that are not learning.Could it be the media and there surroundings that affects how the grow up.

MsJanetWood 1 year ago
@aljmdj "Persistent defiance." is considered a serious offense.
"A pupil can also be expelled for a persistent rebellion against the school rules. This is where the pupil has done many bad things which are not serious when taken on their own, but when taken together, are a serious matter."

The bad ones go elsewhere
tsoenen10 1 year ago
@tsoenen10 maybe because they want to change the world...maybe they need a challenge in their life and this is the way to do it. Any Joe Shmo can go into a classroom of obedient students and teach. It's those teachers who are willing to step beyond their comfort zones and reach out to those kids with troubled backgrounds that should be applauded, not questioned by some ignorant fool on youtube.
GoHoosiers12 1 year ago
@GoHoosiers12 But they aren't applauded or rewarded. I know first hand that they aren't treated any differently than teachers at high performing schools, if not worse. What I am saying is that unless you are, as I said a 'special person', most people will not want to work harder and get paid the same. If your boss said "hey we're going to cut your pay and your job will be harder, but it's going to make a difference" would you be happy? If so you're better than me. I wasn't questioning anyone.
tsoenen10 1 year ago
@tsoenen10 the reward is not one of physical or monetary gain, it's about feeling good about yourself knowing you made enough of a difference in someone's life and hope that they are able to use what you gave them to give themselves a better life. I am a teacher myself and the reason we teachers go into teaching in the first place is not for the money. We all know going into this career field that the money we will make for the work we put in will not match up perfectly but that's not why wedoit
GoHoosiers12 1 year ago
@GoHoosiers12 I understand what you're saying, but if that's the case for most teachers then why aren't they lining up to teach at the underprivilaged schools? If you teach to make a difference no matter how hard it is at those schools I would think the best teachers would be at the schools where they could make the biggest difference right?
tsoenen10 1 year ago
@tsoenen10 define "the best teachers". When you enter into your first few years as a teacher no one knows for sure if you're going to be "good" or not. Most teachers, like 85% at both the underpriviledged and hgher performing schools leave within the first 5 years of entering into this profession for many reasons. Those who are "good" typically get tenured within the first 7-10 years and those who aren't as "good" get fired. So once your potential is realized you typically are tenured...
GoHoosiers12 1 year ago
@tsoenen10 ...therefore when you get tenured and deemed a "good teacher" then why would you leave and not stay where you're at? A lot of teachers stay at the school they're at once tenured because they don't want to have to start over at a new school

Why can children walk around all day listening to a iPod that has songs full of profanity and that's ok as we know that's a major influence...no discipline. Horrible MTV shows are ok to influence children?????

It's about accountablity- for everyone. From the student, to the parent, to the teacher, the administrators on campus. You're right, it's not about throwing more $ at it. Throwing more $ at the Welfare system hasn't fixed it. Throwing more $ at the government hasn't fixed it. It's about taking responisblity for your actions. Teach- if you are a teacher. Parent -if you are a parent. Come prepared to learn if you are a student. BUY INTO YOUR EDUCATIONAL PART!

wait!! i need to understand, in america there is a LOTTERY 'chance' for kids to go to school, is that what they were showing??
ABEGAFE 1 year ago

ABEGAFE 1 year ago
@ABEGAFE There's just way too many underperforming schools that are completely being closed down without enough coming back up to take their place. In Metro areas like Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, NYC and such, it's easy for one school to close and for kids to be spread to neighboring schools. Not so in the lesser dense communities.
So when a charter school opens, the "fairest" way to select students is through double blind systems, such as the lottery system. It's cruel, and needs fixing :T
dblreppuken 1 year ago
Of course, the "fix" usually means needing funding to open more schools and populate them with dependable/qualified faculty, but even that is a problem now. If children are our greatest resource, we're completely decimating it before it has a chance to do anything.
dblreppuken 1 year ago
@dblreppuken
TheRedFear 1 year ago
@TheRedFear
