There is a BBC doco about the construction, the workers could only work on the foundations for something like 5 hours a day and lived in a hut constructed on a large stilt, there was some argy bargy between the two designers.
@nathanh216 Its really cool actually, they built it with that challenge, which is why it is one of the seven wonders of the industrial world. The rock that it sits on is only above the water for a short amount of time.
I used to work on a scallop boat, been an Arbroath boy all my life. One good thing about the job was we past the Bell Rock alot. I will never forget coming in from a trip on rough sea and seeing the waves crash right up the side of it. It's an amazing sight. I hope it stands forever. Great video.
Next year The Bell Rock celebrates its bicentanary, the Northern Lighthouse Board , Bell Rock.org and The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses at Kinnaird Head Frazerburgh plus a few other organisations are planning to mark the occasion in one way or another. I myself have written a trilogy of poems called Saints and Angels (I've yet to put them on my channel pjhill038 with the rest of my poems) they tell in three parts, a ship that was lost, the building of the Bell Rock and the first keepers.
Just watched about this on seven wonders of the industial world (I love netflix)! Looked this up. Great video and comments! nearly 200 years old! I guess they were right about the design. Thanks for posting this.
this vid is the best i wish the northern lighthouse co would let you see the bellrock up close can i offer tnt as a choice to make a good landing on inchcape just for the tourists plus the bell rock lido with all the fun
this brings back wonderful memories, my name is Robert Stevenson and I ws the principal contractor on this project. The sumer of 1807 was phenomenal, we lived on the rock in wooden sheds
The video brought back great memories for me - I am a Steeplejack and It was my home for a month ( two fortnight stints)after the fire in 1988. We repaired all the heat damaged stonework at the top - Fed and watered by the two lighthouse keepers - total isolation from the outside world I wish I was a bit older at the time to really appreciate it.
this is a very wonderful doc. made by bbc... very amazinggg!

The lighthouse is made of granite it would take some strong bird droppings to erode that.

@nathanh216 indeed, the reef upon which it lies is beneath the sea most of the time.
DangRockets 8 months ago
@DangRockets i know the reef and the rocks it sits on 7 miles away from my house are called the inchcape rocks
nathanh216 8 months ago
@nathanh216 it's a bit further than 7 miles out nathan, it's approximately 11 miles away from Arbroath.

The Bell Rock lighthouse has a rich history and this one is personal favorite.

An amazing feat of design and construction. I'm surprised only 2 people died building it. May it last 10,000 years.

Nicely shot, and we all love the Stevenson family.. But some commentary would be good.

On "Seven Wonders" it looked like the stone was cut in a Dovetail arrangement and slotted together that way.
Does these sound right?
purepils 2 years ago
yes I saw seven wonders and it does apear to be cleverly interlocked block and that would also makegood sence ,
