Excellent footage... ! It amazes that Skylab sometimes gets lost amid the Apollo fuss... you mention it to teens or kids now, and they have never even heard of it. Such a shame, because we did some amazing science on that space station, and learned a lot about life in weightlessness...
My God, look at the size of the free space inside the station. That is HUGE. The ISS modules are quite large too, however 50% of the space in the modules is used up by the science racks and equipment racks and the sheer number of supplies they need. Another reason the ISS is not quite that large is because the modules where made to fit in the back of the Space Shuttle for transport to space. SO they couldn't be any bigger. Skylab was a empty Apollo rocket tank, that's HUUUGE compared to shuttle.
True. I wonder how big would be the module on the ship which will carry people to Mars some day. If it will be as small as one of ISS modules, that would be rather claustrophobic...
@Andybucker The plans the US had in the 70s if I'm not mistaken envisioned using an adapted skylab-style habitation module, attached to a big rocket booster, for the interplanetary journey.
It was Nixon that killed NASA's mars project in the end, because thje focus by then was on Vietnam and the funding was 'needed' to keep that going. It's a real shame in some ways - investment in a peaceful advancement of humankind's frontiers foregone in preference of continuing to fund a futile bloodbath.
This thing was fucking huge. Somewhat reminds you of that scene in "2001" (maybe Pete was inspired by that? :-P). Do they have any module on the ISS these days with such a diameter?
and he was inspired by it. i think arther c clarke wrote in the introduction to one of his books (2010, i think) that he got an old film reel from nasa of the skylab astronauts running inside of the station like this (he says he gave it to stanley kubrick, who lost it because he "uses a tamed black hole as a file folder.")
also, i dont think they have a module of this diameter on the ISS, but im not sure.
Is there a way in which I can break this movie into just a 30-second segment so that I can use it in my KeyNote project and not get points off for plagiarism?
pete...my hero...he said:if you cant be good-be colourful!and by god he was...i wish i had meet him-now its too late.too bad there are no men like him arround...george w wouldnt be in charge...
Looks like Skylab had more running around space than the ISS which has smaller modules not as wide as Skylab?

I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet Pete Conrad before he died in 1999. What a great guy he was.

It must have been wonderful after been in those rather cramped capsules to be in space in something this freaking BIG!
