How does one help make a "nervous/shy" cat more friendly? We are fostering a black cat w/red speckles named Mandy. She's almost a year old and she's always hiding under cabinets and beds. The minute you take a step towards her, she scampers. We can't even groom her regularly. I have to take her to the vet, and the vet needs to make her sleep for check-ups. That's how nervous a cat she is. But she is so attached to our 2 other cats. She meows endlessly whenever any of them isn't around with her.
@peachybrets I'm sure the recent change in environment is stressful for her. Once she is in a permanent home and with time perhaps she will relax. She may have suffered trauma in her early life that she needs time to heal.
I have a cat almost identical - he just has a tiny crooked white stripe on his nose. Also extremely affectionate. He is the gentlest cat I've ever taken care of and he is so good with my other three (all girls). Playful, but submissive - he knows you can't take on three females! I rescued three barn cats during the 2 1/2 years that I lived next door to someone who had a collection. Such a place really is not good for me and I'm glad I don't live there anymore. The ginger is one of them.
black kitty got all her claws, i love playing with her front and back paws. she lets me rub her tummy all the time. i love squezing her paws, making her claws come out.
What a happy ending! My first cat was found taped inside a cardboard box where I work. You guys are so sweet to post that video to help the cat. And it sounds like he found a wonderful family as well. This story just made my whole night!
My cat Buffy, I found last winter extreemly famished and cold as it was below zero weather. She had frost bite on her legs and the vet said he was surprised she still had her ears. I had later found out she had been abused and a man dropped her off at a bar (I live in a small town., everyone knows everyone). I really love your videos. I am very passionate about animals and I can't wait until I have my own place to foster animals like you (right now I'm a poor college student living at home)
It's so wonderful to see you rescue such loving cats, and find them homes. It is of my opinion that those who do things like this have truly beautiful hearts, and noble souls.

I think removal of dew-claws in the UK and US is the norm (these claws are present on dogs, just above the foot and are easily caught on branches etc, often leading to much worse injuries if not removed surgically), however I don't know if that applies to cats in the same way, but if it is done (whatever claws it applies to), it's probably to prevent some other health issue, as opposed for owner-convinience.
Many cats are declawed in the US for the convenience of the owner. The cat is anethestized for the operation but wakes up to terrible pain and a long and difficult recovery. Most cats live with some form of pain in their feet for the rest of their lives. They are quiet animals and don't complain so most humans are ignorant about how cruel this is.
@klusmanp I used to work for a vet and it's disgusting to see how they do it! Look at your own hand. See the first knuckle? Now imagine someone cutting your finger off at that knuckle! Thats what happens! Very painful surgery!
@klusmanp I had to declaw my kitty Ada when I moved into my apartment. It was mandatory if I was going to bring her with me...and I couldn't abandon her. : (
@klusmanp not only that. with the pain and suffering if they ever were to accidently go outside and get lost they wont be able to defend themselves :S
Reminds me of Luna, our cat. Wonderful cat, fantastic fur, but unfortunately she was very shy and nervous, so we just put some fish in a bowl with some milk every day, and we just became closer and closer. Then, you we're lucky if you just managed to touch her, now you're lucky if you can hold her in your hands for over 10 minutes. She had become a completely different cat, and she is cozy and funny. All that for only 4-5 months.
You are a great person for caring so much. I'm sure you hear that often, but I just had to say it. My husband and I fostered over 25 cats and kittens before our children came along--I sure do miss it. But we do have 3 cats of our own --all strays. We wouldn't have it any other way. :O) Take care!
we bought my cat sunshine for my other cat rummy 2 play with and she was shy when we met he she stayed in the corner the whole time. we took her cuz we felt he would make her happy and not b shy and she still is she doesnt ever come out only at night. so we think she might have been abused.... we also knew nobody would probably take her and it was one of those kill shelters that if they stayed there 2 long they would b kicked out so another cat can take the cage :(
Good for you taking on a kitty who would not have much of a chance. People who adopt cats a good people, but people who adopt shy kitties who don't have much of a chance for love are AWESOME. Give kitty some time and some love. Some day kitty may trust people again. You are awesome!!

Update-Woody is doing great! He is a joy & was part of the family from day 1. We renamed him Sonny, Sorry Paul We thought it fit his "sunny" demeanor. He is spunky, loves to play & has tons of energy his favorite game is fetch, throw the ball & he will bring it right back. Sonny is a big time cuddler, loves to snuggle & give kisses. He is very vocal, he & his sister Sassy are very chatty! After we got him life went crazy so we never had a chance to get with Paul for a video update. Maybe soon.
I love orange cats, I would love to take woody. My daughter is allergic to cats though, if I take woody would you put up a video of my daughter and maybe adopt her out?
Wow! Smart, funny, clean-cut guy(s) who are kind to cats. I'm subscribing!! And I can't wait to see the science/techie videos you mention planning to do. Aloha :)
I love cats, but my dad won't let me adopt one because my sisters and mom are alergic. My sisters are at college, and my parents are divorced, so I don't see why my dad just doesn't give in. Oh well. Great work.
Hi klusmanp, well done to you and your friends. Its a great deed to rescue cats. Also I am delighted to hear that Woody(he is so friendly) has found a new home. Bye.
I LOVE CATS! We have one fluffy little thing who looks like a skinny powederpuff with brown spots. We'd have more, but my Mom's allergies can only handle so much. The engineer's guide is SO true. My cat is like the second cat you spoke of only A THOUSAND TIMES FLUFFIER!I love that you are a cat person!
Hello, If anybody in NC is lookin for a kitty, I took in a cat that had kittens under my cousin's house and have found homes for the kittens but nobody seems to want an adult. I got her fixed and she's a small cat & all grey. She's only about a year old and she gets along well with my dogs, But I can't keep her, and If I don't find a home soon I'll have to take her to the pound. If anyone is interested please contact me on my page. I could also get pictures if you'd like.Thanks,Stephanie.
I love how he keeps cuddling up against your leg--too cute! I saw on the Reginald video that Woody found a home--YAY! You guys are fabulous to do what you do for these kitties.
God can't come on the Earth and help to any one personaly , but God sent people like you to make this world better place to live .
Thank you very much for everything what you do . I came to Canada with my two cats,,, and if my cats couldn't go ,,, this is real question if i will go without them .
Hey, it's easy to do the rescue with little guys like this, eh? My cat Mudface was a "rescue," meaning to say, he came by and decided he was going to live here, whether we wanted him around or not. One of the best behaved cats my family has ever had, and lasted about 14 years after his "adoption."
Thank you so much for loving these cats and finding them loving homes. It seems to me that people have such a heart for dogs, but not so much for cats. You're awesome.
I've re-homed kitties that have show up at my door and, as I'm sure you've discovered, there is nothing more rewarding than finding a home for a stray. They have all turned out to be fabulous cats, and its been great to follow up with their adoptive owners and hear how much they're appreciated and loved.
It's great to hear Woody has found a home. Good job and bless you!
you 2 guys are awesome we need more people like you in the world i have 5 cats currently inside, plus an outside feral cat colony not for sure about the exact numbers,i have identified 15 and have taken 10 of them in for spay neuter etc,and concats to Woodie
Ok...have you heard how Woody likes his new home and owner. Every cat we have had either comes from an animal shelter or is a stray that was abandoned. Thank God, for guys like you too. It's so sad to see any animal left to fend for themselves.
What a great cat.. I'm already that girl with 2 cats (in an inefficiency)... but I have a feeling that you are in severe danger of becoming that guy with four cats!!!
He sure is. Would be nice for him to have a kitty friend as well - he has been very friendly to other cats I've seen him with. Let me know if you would like to meet him. I'm in wichita KS.
The vet did not say. I would gess he is about 2 - 3 years old.
I have not seen his behavior around dogs. We can check this out if you are interested in him. He is pretty shy/docile around humans. He appears to have a very slight past injury in his left eye so I'm guessing he is a scrappy little guy. His reaction to other cats is always friendly even if the other cat is not. Hopefully this would be true with dogs as well.
Now that's a cool cat with a cool name. Looks like he found himself the right group of guys to hang with as well. Hope he finds a good home soon although I think he rather likes hanging out with you. Keep him, he has chosen you ! :)
Yeah I've got 3 other cats already. So I'm already getting close to being "that guys who has all those cats..." Spread the word for Woody's sake. He is located in Wichita, KS and we need to find him a home.
What a great tail motif you have kitty.

aww! i love cats that jump up to put their head in your palm for pats :)
can see that he really enjoys the love.
i'm very glad he's got his claws intact. it's a terrible thing to declaw cats.
it seems like that's a normal thing to do in the US?
And when you own a cat, getting scratched when you play with them happens from time to time.
most cats that i've met have been very gentle and never attacked to hurt me.
claws are important to every cat, like our fingers are to us...

I love cats, but my dad won't let me adopt one because my sisters and mom are alergic. My sisters are at college, and my parents are divorced, so I don't see why my dad just doesn't give in. Oh well. Great work.

I don't understand how anyone could abuse an animal. It's just sick and wrong!

Hey, it's easy to do the rescue with little guys like this, eh? My cat Mudface was a "rescue," meaning to say, he came by and decided he was going to live here, whether we wanted him around or not. One of the best behaved cats my family has ever had, and lasted about 14 years after his "adoption."

how do you other cats deal with the foster kats?

Orange cats are typically very sweet. Lucky Woody. Tell us, did he get a home of his own?

Thank you so much for loving these cats and finding them loving homes. It seems to me that people have such a heart for dogs, but not so much for cats. You're awesome.

That is so sweet.
I love him. The cat. Not you. I just like you. I love him.

Ok...have you heard how Woody likes his new home and owner. Every cat we have had either comes from an animal shelter or is a stray that was abandoned. Thank God, for guys like you too. It's so sad to see any animal left to fend for themselves.
KDJ999 3 years ago 2
What a great cat.. I'm already that girl with 2 cats (in an inefficiency)... but I have a feeling that you are in severe danger of becoming that guy with four cats!!!

Is Woody still available? I have one cat and am looking for another as her buddy.
Did the vet say about how old he was?
jkatone 4 years ago
He sure is. Would be nice for him to have a kitty friend as well - he has been very friendly to other cats I've seen him with. Let me know if you would like to meet him. I'm in wichita KS.
The vet did not say. I would gess he is about 2 - 3 years old.
klusmanp 4 years ago
Do you know if he likes dogs? Ours is 3 & likes to play, but isn't rough.
susupetals 4 years ago
I have not seen his behavior around dogs. We can check this out if you are interested in him. He is pretty shy/docile around humans. He appears to have a very slight past injury in his left eye so I'm guessing he is a scrappy little guy. His reaction to other cats is always friendly even if the other cat is not. Hopefully this would be true with dogs as well.
klusmanp 4 years ago
Now that's a cool cat with a cool name. Looks like he found himself the right group of guys to hang with as well. Hope he finds a good home soon although I think he rather likes hanging out with you. Keep him, he has chosen you ! :)
Acelib 4 years ago
Yeah I've got 3 other cats already. So I'm already getting close to being "that guys who has all those cats..." Spread the word for Woody's sake. He is located in Wichita, KS and we need to find him a home.
