I was thinking about writing something like "beautiful pictures, but they are not up to this music", but when I caught sight of the flower at 4:39 I gave it up saying, well, you are right, well done, and began "weinen bitterlich"...
Thanks for the comment. Of course no pictures can ever equal this music. I do hope that I captured some moments though. I welcome your thoughts on the three remaining videos that complete this cycle.
Wunderbar! Vielen Dank!
i don't know german, and had never listened to Schumann until today, but this music is truly something special and speaks to me like few songs have ever done
@Pabybaby This is actually a very good and well constructed translation...Why don't you offer your own translation if this one does not please you ? It's esasy to criticize and difficult to produce.......
Thank you FiDiTanzer528! I love the beautiful images you have chosen for your videos and having the German and English subtitles really works :) Fischer-Dieskau's rendering of Schumann's genius song-writing is wonderfully moving.
Another device that Schumann used is the ambiguity of tonality. In " Im wunderschönen Monat Mai" , although the tonic appears to be
F♯ minor, the voice was introduced with what appears to be A major cadence. This ambiguity of tonality expressed ( ALTHOUGH THE WORDS DID NOT EXPRESS) that the result of his love is uncertain. A perfect example of music expressing what the words do not say.
Absolutely Lovely!!! Wonderful quality of sound, so close. Thank you as always Karen, and belated birthday wishes to DFD, who has our gratitude and affection always.
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai is a perfect example of music expressing what words cannot express. The unresolved chord at the end saying that his desires were un-fulfilled.
I concur with Glenmed. Karen, you are the Michelangelo of YouTube! These songs are so great . It will take me months to take in the performances. But thank *you* so much for the perfect visual accompaniment to this very rich dish! Wonnevoll:)
It is a lot to take in. I hadn't listened to this performance in quite some time and was actually floored (again!) by it, listening over and over to certain passages while working on this. The entire recital was Heine settings, 1956 being a Heine anniversary year (centenary of his death).
Oh, I couldn't take my eyes off it - or ears. I was going to say particularly the last one, but I'll say particularly them all. The epitome of art all through. I hope the great man has time to look at how you have preserved him and honoured him. Perhaps he is a subscriber?!?!
FiDi as a subscriber? Looking at my videos? Ach! I think I would melt on the spot! I'm not even sure if he has email, Barry, old fashioned gentleman that he is. :) I would fervently hope that he would view my work as the tribute it is meant to be. Thanks!
What a beautiful and flawless performance! His voice is darker here than it is in later years, I like that a lot. Great interpretation with focus on the essential.
Glad you're pleased, Martin, since you gave me the idea to do this. I had forgotten how wonderful this performance was but really got to listen intently while working on the video. And yes,his voice was darker then. This entire recital (all Heine) is fabulous!
Гениальная ,Неповторимая Интерпретация Шумана !!!! Какой берущий за душу Голос !!!
Un Voce Geniale . Un Interpretazione Inripetibile ! La Voce prende anima !!! Grazie Mille

Well, if you think so you can blame composer Paul Hindemith as these are his translations. Sorry they do not please.

Common mistake, but this is not Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau it's Jens Avocadis. They had almost identical voices.

The sound quality is good, isn't it, considering it's live and 1956. Thanks, dear friend, for viewing. What a glorious cycle this is.

Music raised a monument for him.
Today is his special day, 84th birthday.
His work is always unfailing.
I came under his great influence when I was so young. It looks like life-changing experience with me.
Thanks for sharing!
