TOO BAD THAT THEY DON'T MAKE THESE KINDS OF AIRCRAFT ANY MORE! I feel cheated. We ought to begin a petition directed to Boeing saying that we want more MD-80s/90s !!
@antimatterXXXIII DFW that is - Texas style super suckage - compare to MSP, a nice, grassy, human airport that functioned perfectly fine as a hub for NWA for decades.
let me guess, seat 27A. I've been on an MD-80 before. i think that 737s are boring. i liked the MD-80 i did a round trip fron LAX to DFW. going to dallas, i was in seat 27A and coming back, I was in seat 30F. very awsome plane and is this seat 27A
Being an artist, I sense several beauties that many travelers and vacationers take for granted - like the whining of the engines, the perspectives of depths on the world below, the clouds accompanying us in the heavens and the monochromatic textures of the metal on the wing.
@ossi131096 Oh yeah, and the 737 and A320 are so exciting. The MD-80 and 90 are very different from each other and add some variety to things. A world of 737s and A320s is what is boring.
Music to my ears too...love those high and low contrasting engine sounds, and oscillations that settle and synchronize into a singular tone. As a composer, I just sent you 'GAROTA', inspired by flying, and as a private pilot, I enjoyed your video... thanks.
I think these planes are awesome, while i was flying to Munich from Chisinau i saw one land and it was one old,but pretty cool, what suprised me is that i thought they all retired, but it's 2010,and they are still in service.
msp = Minneapolis St Paul World Chamberlin International Airport .....the md80/88/90 and DC 9/30/40/50 are very reliable aircraft...it is a shame we are loosing these birds to the desert.
You know, I really like the exterior aesthetics of the MD80. The long and slender body is really elegant. But 80's can really be a tough bird when you're flight is more than 3 hours and the plane is packed. No amenities except the bathroom
Use Google and others that have replied....MSP is Minneapolis/St. Paul. The Mississippi divides the two, and the river starts in Minnesota...but far from the state.
Here's another little Maddog detail: Back in the 90's, I flew on these things all the time. Just about every time, from boarding until beginning the takeoff roll, the ailerons would be skewed, often fully up or down. When starting the roll, the wind would quickly straiten them out. Not any more. Prolly made people a little nervous.
I noticed the flaps weren't extended quite all the way. Odd. Perhaps a minor malfunction. It would explain the seemingly zippy landing and full blast thrust reversers.
Looked like a landing on runway 22 if I'm not mistaken (used to work at MSP). Winds must have really been blowing that day if ATC was using just the one runway.
when i was younger, i was on an MD-80, and i was sitting right next to the engine. it broke down and we had to do an emergency landing... scariest moment of my life. it's still a great plane.
Great video excellent sound I love the maddog, flown in it a lot of times, has a very distinctive sound, and I just love the thud of the main gear locking in position after takeoff, it's steep rate of climb and all the thrust adjustments before landing... all the way until thrust goes into idle for touchdown... all that sensation of relief. Great video pal, keep 'em coming.
I didn't believe you until I got a chance to compare them on different legs of a journey. Unbelievable difference. In this case, an MD90 in first class vs the back of a 738. WOW! Absolutely smooth, quiet, and a real pleasure in the Mad Dog.
the mad dogs are great aircraft known for comfort and their sound. i used to be a pilot for delta airlines and i mostly flew the md-88 and md-90 while i was in service. the one you had was laggy because it has a loud roaring backround thats from winds. it kind of disables that sound to seem perfect. nice video.
AA and Delta are the last major airlines flying the Mad Dog 80s on regular services. More than 20 years since it first flew, the MD-80 is still a surprisingly graceful plane to fly. They will be deeply missed when both AA and Delta replace them with 737-800s (which is VERY soon) so enjoy the MD-80s while they're still there...
McDonnell Douglas built the MD 88 specifically for Delta Airlines (talk about customer service!).
Did you also know that eventhough the MD 88's were designed and the first one built later than many of the other MD 80's, the last MD 80 (83) rolled off the assembly line much later than the last MD 88.
That last MD 83 was delivered to TWA and it is most likely somewhere in American's fleet.
Did you now the FAA considers the MD80 (81,82, and 83) different aircraft from the MD88 eventhough they look almost the same? The MD88 had a different FAA certification from the other MD80 line. McDonnell Douglas built the MD 88 specifically for Delta Airlines (talk about customer service!).

It is just the sound of the P&W JT8D engines. You won't hear it on the GE CFM engines that the 737 has.
