  • i like pie. :D

  • when i was 3 years old i use to crap my pants in excitement.

  • I own the manual, and he is indeed named as Mario. The woman you are trying to rescue, however, is only "Mario's Girlfriend."

  • at the end you were talking about game and watch

  • @bland9876 No your looking at drugs for a gamer

  • I am confused I thought portable donkey long was the gba game with like 32 levels

  • I have this game for the Atari 2600, But i don't have the Atari 2600 console. But the game goes nicely with my game collection.

  • When I first played this version I thought it looked terrible and it only had 2 screens. I also had a Colecovision and that version looked better and had three boards but the 2600 version was much more challenging. Once you got over 100K the bad guys on the rivet screen would start jumping over the gaps. It got really tough! I also remember people talking about a secret way to find the elevators board. It was a false rumor of coarse.

  • I see DK does a good impression of Zippy from Rainbow!

  • This rather introduces Rosallina than Pauline...

  • donkey kong's name came from when japan sent over the name it was supposed to be Monkey Kong but then came a typo which spawned Donkey Kong

  • fake. fake and gay

  • @hosen4 :gtfo:

  • Well, in the german version of this game, the user guide already calls him Mario.

Oh, could anybody help me with my atari2600 junior? I didn't play for several weeks, and when I switched it on to play donkey kong, I suddenly hadn't any sound. I witched it on and off, tried anything with my TV, but the sound has disappeard. It worked before, so what could it be what I've been doing wrong?

  • @immothep101 Just wait. I had a similar issue. Just keep playing. It fixes itself.

  • I like donkey kong

  • The handheld DK was the Nintendo game and watch ,there was many other handheld game and watch games too

  • mario in donkey kong is called jumpman

  • "donkey" in donkey kong translated from japanese (where the game was originally programed) for crazy or stupid.

  • that lcd game your talking about that looks like the the ds. it was a game&watch game.if you have never herd of it go on google and look it up and it will show you what i mean.

  • hey the cartridge says coleco industries amsterdam, new york.

so is the company part dutch or is there a place named amsterdam in the state new york also?

  • @Funkdogg

There is a city called Amsterdam in Montgomery County in New York.

  • sound effects in this game were later ripped off for Popeye

  • Man, Donkey Kong is a lazy bastard in this game, he just stands there while the barrels throw themselves.

  • i had the atari 2600,&75 working games including this one,but i lost them all about 6

years ago i also had 3 copys the et.

when i first got it didnt know the story behind the game&how it nearly killed the

video game industry ,but after playing the game&hearing the story it wasn't hard to imagine.

  • i had the atari 2600,&75 working games including this one,but i lost them all about 6

  • I don't care about graphics but donkey kong looks like the ginger bread man.

  • This review didn't say shit about the gameplay at all, about the control mechanics, goddamn, can't you guys just put in a little effort instead of pumping out bullshit?

  • also the portable game system you are talking about with the 2 screens was a Game & Watch

  • Donkey Kong looks like The Big Bad Gingerbread Man

  • You know why they call it an XBOX 360?

  • @darrenmuse Because you turn 360 degrees and Moonwalk away, just like in the music video for Billie Jean.

  • Donkey Kong looks like a gingerbread man.

  • @adornador6q

    how about no

  • DONKEY KONG LOOKS LIKE A GINGER BREAD MAN! PURE CRAP FOR THE 2600! :( Stay AWAY

  • @nviso209 hey, its atari graphics. you cant complain. but i will say this game is very fun and addicting

  • @nviso209

    gtfo back to black ops

  • Pauline is THE TOY STORY ALIEN

  • It is the game and watch donkey kong I have posted a vid of it but mine is ported to GBC so it is not LCD

  • They even made this on Pocket God :D

  • @mmkirby001

Well I hope Jumpman jumps on these bloody adverts.

  • great game!

  • donkeykong -def.1) jackass gorilla. def.2) gorilla that is a jackass. def.3) gorilla jackass.

  • This was an awesome port and it really couldn't have been better for the 2600. Colecovision, NES, 7800, and many computer ports were all AWESOME, but the Intellivision version left a LOT to be desired...

  • It's called Donkey Kong because of the Japanese and their English thesauruses. It was called "Stubborn Monkey" originally but they had the word "Donkey" used in place of "Stubborn" and the word "Kong" in place of "Monkey.

    That's the truth.

  • donkey kong looks like a stick man

  • miyamoto thought donkey kong mean stupid ape

  • OK dude, do some research first. It came out in 1981, his name was Jumpman (a carpenter) and you were not the first classic video game review show on the internet. i was in 1995 (you know that). Check out my review of Donkey Kong for more info.

  • @BiffsGamingVideos Any proof?

  • @ResurrectedTemplar Actually, yes. I have posted a whole series from 1995 the summer consumer electronics show in chicago where i interviewed a ton of peeple 9atari, sega, taito, us gold, midway, cd-i, 3do). i have more I'll post at some point. Go to my channel and see. CGR knows I was first from 1995 beating them. They changed their newer videos but the older stuff they haven't

  • @BiffsGamingVideos It were interviews. But CGRHD's description states that they were first who did REVIEWS of classic games on the web. It's different things.

  • @ResurrectedTemplar listen. i was first. i did reviews back in the 1980s and started online in 1995. I have reviews of Atari 8 bit and ST computer stuff. CGR knows that. I posted the SCES just to show 1995 as proof. It can not be faked. A review can be. We know the exact day of that SCES. Jeff minter doesn't look like that today. everyone knows this but you. I was doing this stuff before most of you all were breast feeding.

  • @BiffsGamingVideos But it proves only that you did interviews.

Besides, if you did reviews, what was the quality of videos? And why you did 'em in the first place? In 1995 internet wasn't as popular as in 1999 and of course was hell of a lot slower, so who would download them and watch them? What, people spent like 3 weeks downloading one review? I doubt it.

  • donkey kong looks like chewbacca

  • The game was a little watered down for the 2600 but it was still a good and fun game

  • Hmm.....and I thought the Intellivision version of this game was flawed! Perhaps those rumors of Coleco intentioning doing bad ports of games to non-Coleco systems are true!

  • lol they actually make halo custom matches that r called "donkey kong" they r alot of fun to play just like the real game

  • I had a watch that had Donkey Kong on it. I had to send in a bunch of cereal box proof of purchases. I played the crap out of it, and it was actually the first time I ever played Donkey Kong.

  • that is mario, i remember i had this game back in the early 80s for the 2600, and all my friends called him mario, so i guess it was mario, i believe the box it came in also said mario tries to save the princess from donkey kong or some sh like that.

  • @jupiterscastle her name was pauline

  • Nice sync of highest rated comments :D

  • OMG it looks like Mario has a giant boner when he gets a hammer! LOL

  • I like how when Jumpman is climbing ladders, Donkey Kong dances to it.

  • @Kellykellamster Donkey Kong do the same thing when Donkey Kong Jr. is climbing vines in the Donkey Kong Jr. game in the Atari 2600.

  • the hand held version of donkey kong was called a game and watch. there was more than just donkey kong, but each game in watch only played one game. i think the level in the game and watch version of donkey kong is really fun!

  • in the donkey kong games his name was jumpman, they renamed him mario because there was some guy who was like presedint of nintendo of america or sold land to nintendo or something, and nintendo named mario after that guy

  • I have this game for the Atari 2600. I found it while cleaning my landlords tenants apt. 4 years ago. It was dirty, So I cleaned it up & fixed it. I don't have the 2600 anymore. I lost that back in the 80's when I was a kid. Glad to see Footage of the game on here.

  • whoah they play cartoons on saturdays well in canada exclusive shows on every saturday morning but still not as good back in the day remember super mario bros show?

  • I have Donkey Kong for Atari 2600 and on my version are Donkey Kong green why?

  • @shayminlover96 maybe he's on drugs or something...

  • is there a kill screen on that version?

  • Didn't the Mario Brothers game come before this in the arcade? The one where they bounce up and down on a see-saw thing?

  • @canadaguy2112ca nope.... donkey kong was first... watch the atari 2600 commercial from mario broders. it wil say: with the mario broders from Donkey Kong

    Look it up!

  • @pongboy1100 it's with mario from donkey kong

  • @howardmckinley2 yeah okay.

  • @pongboy1100 de nada

  • @howardmckinley2 de nada? boobiewabasqeu die a bob

  • his name was jumpman

  • this guys voicw make me sick

  • they use these sound effects in a lot of cartoons

  • those things were called game&watches.

  • Mario's name was jumpman,

and it was originally suposed to be Popeye as Mario

    Olive Oil as Peach/Toadstool

    and Bluto as Donkey Kong

Nintendo did not use the popeye characters because the were unable to get the copy right for those characters

  • cool i didnt know that, so who made the popeye game that are very simular to this?

  • @wonamik Nintendo still ended up making Popeye, just later.

  • The girl's name in Donkey Kong is Pauline, The Princess didn't show up until Super Mario Bros.

  • donkey kong cereal = original Capn' crunch

  • I remember the Arcade version very well it ate alot of my quarters.

I got the 2600 version first then the Atari 400 version which was almost a carbon copy of the Arcade.

  • jump man was his name

  • i have this game :-) i so rock :-)

  • My rating for this game: 5/10, because the graphics arn't to good, and Mario looks humungus compared to the obstacles, the colors are suckish and wrong, and, it plain isn't Donkey Kong.

  • @rubberdidgit thats how its supposed to be

  • so you have to jump over the trapdoor things? then you get points? what about going to talk to donkey kong?

  • only 2 levels? fuck that.

  • *Wikipedia summary* When Shigeru Miyamoto called it "Donkey Kong", he thought 'donkey' meant 'stupid' in English. He wanted a name that we (americans) could relate to

  • i have no idea why nintendo gave the name donkey to an ape,it should be a donkey but still a good game

  • You're talking about Donkey Kong Game & Watch. It is a really good game.

  • This was a good port to atari 2600,the arcade had a bit better gfx,but this still was fairly solid in the gameplay.

  • The handheld device that you were talking about sounds like a Game & Watch. They did have a Donkey Kong version of it. In fact I have it for the GameBoy.

  • he is called jumpman

  • Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong Jr. are 2 games that really need to find their way onto Xbox Live Arcade! Hopefully they port the actual arcade versions of both, to the Xbox360.

  • @concretespecial they mostlikely wont, since nintendo made them.

  • Oh yea, that's right. Didn't even think about that. Tis' a shame. Maybe they could come to some agreement. I'd love to see these titles on the live arcade nonetheless.

  • @concretespecial yeah.

  • donkey kong, is because donkey is a type of monkey, and hes more brown then red

  • Donkey is a stupid-looking horse thing.

  • o yeah sorry, i didnt realize

  • he wasnt called mario until mario bros. in the games before that he was called jumpman becouse donkey kong was the first game EVER yo can jump in

  • I dont remember the handheld, but i had the watch with the lcd. It would be cool if you did a seiries of reviews on the old hand helds. Merlin, Texas instruments, mattel, coleco mini cabinets, etc.

  • I could hear the repressed pain in your voice for that last line. :)

  • Legendary Donkey Kong

  • @spicymos OH yes that was annoying with the TV.

I come from germany and when I was in my grandfathers house (75miles away) i noticed that they had digital television.

I discovered FOX Kids(now Jetix) and they sent the Super Mario Bros. SUper show, Ninja Turtles, everything i liked....

But i could watch it only once in the year, and that pissed me off and now... theres the internet :(

  • Oh, another thing (not absolutely sure) it goes DK, DK J, and then DK like in DK Country, Also the girl Mario has to save is rumored to have left Mario for the guy u play as in DK3.

  • No, I'm pretty sure the Donkey Kong in DK country is the same as DK jr.

  • Yeah it could be

  • Donkey Kong means "stupid monkey."

  • The question I have is: Did Coleco even TRY to port this thing? Check out Montezuma's Revenge or even Miner 2049er and tell me they couldn't have done a better job with this!

I think it's possible that Coleco did a piss-poor job on purpose - to promote it's version on their Colecovision. Certainly a better job could have been done in 1982 - and even if they had to use more memory (which raised the price), people would've had bought this in large quantities.

    Of course, they did anyway...

  • RE cartoons...if you missed the Charlie Brown Christmas Special or Riki Tiki Tava you had to wait a whole year to see them again.

  • WARNING:THIS IS RANDOM

I like playing the NES vershion of Donkey Kong, and I'm only 14.You might say that I like to go back to the roots of good videogaming.

  • You made a comment about donkey kong on a clip of donkey kong? That's.. random?

  • Donkey Kong have very versions in Nintendo NES, super nintendo, Nintendo 64 and Game Cube this game was selled in all the planet and yet maintance great competence whit Mario, Donkey Kong bellong to all gama of video games in all world.

  • At 2:56 you're talking about Donkey Kong for the Game & Watch. My cousins had that and it was surprisingly very fun.

  • Yeah I love Game and Watch.

  • i heard that when they were making the title it was supposed to be monkey kong but there was a typo and when they first saw they noticed it but they made so many copies they didn't want to change it.

  • Rofl.. he said Donkey Kong Jr.. on the 2600 look like Sach Squash

  • i played this for days, good old memories

  • this nosltalgic game features very gameplayers and Donkey Kong conquered together Mario millions persons adults and childrens is very good in atari great console also nintendo.

  • yeah the game and watch games, they were awsome

  • DK (and his son...Jr.) and Pac-Man were probably THE WORST of the arcade ports ever made for the 2600.

Ironically, for way too many years afterwards, both 2600 Pac-Man AND 2600Donkey Kong's sound effects were widely used in television and movies to represent what a video game was suppose to sound like...with way too few exceptions. May have been a Genesis/Game Boy/PlayStation on screen. But, it was a 2600 PM/DK sound, representing the game being played.

  • Ms Pacman was surprisingly good though. Played that for many hours.

  • I agree. Ms. Pac-Man was done very well for that system. However, Jr. Pac-Man (the only home port that exists.) is so near arcade perfect, it doesn't seem possible for it to be a 2600 game. Sadly, Jr. shares it's arcade cousin's error of being extremely hard.

Even worse: Jr. was just the start of Pac-disaster. Jr/Baby/Professor/Super/3-D...the list just goes on with bad Pac flops. Mr world/ms world/trivia...I'll stop, now.

  • In this game, Mario is referred to as "Jump Man."

  • In the original releases before mario brothers.

  • offence but the game & watch version of donkey kong is much better then the atari version

  • i heard they wanted monkey kong but there was typo and it got so successful that they kept it

  • I'm afraid that is false

the first name for Donkey kong was Stubborn Gorilla but Nintendo saw that probably wouldn't be to popular here in the states. So they put Donkey for stubborn and kong (as in King Kong) for Gorilla

  • no they wanted to call the game stubbon gorilla

  • yeah i heard that to

  • Shut the F*** UP i Like Pac-Man AND EVEN ET

  • ya it really dosnt make sense when poeple say its the worst game ever

    theres much more worse games(pong)

  • because it was amazing.

  • they named him donkey kong to apeal to western society in japan

donkey referring to jakass refurring to stupid and kong refurring to ape

  • actually mario`s name there was jumpman

  • I had the donkey kong junior mini lcd thing D:

I was so proud and showed it off to everyone at school XD

  • mario was called "jump man" on DK

    wasnt he?

  • yes

  • the pc version was much better

  • i remember the cartoon i saw the show i wasnt that bad

  • "falwed" eh, maybe you're the one that translated it?

  • lol, good job. I laughed hard when I read that. I was just typing and my keyboard messed up. kinda not as effective i guess. but i dont know why it has so many thumbs down, thats what happened. Serious.

  • Im sure you're right but a lot of people here seem to be pretty obnoxious XD

    Bring on the thumbs downs...

  • @antisonicpower:

No, he was Donkey Kong from the start.

  • the NES version was very close to the arcade

  • The Donkey Kong arcade game was infinitely better than the 2600 one. I loved the aracade game and couldn't wait for the 2600 game to come out. I was pretty disappointed when it did. The Donkey Kong arcade was spectacular though.

  • yeah revit the ori donkey kong in the arcade dude the nes had a goood copy but was missing one stage where the pies will go across dont understand why because nintendo made it?but so did donkey kong jr with donkeys hide out.

  • donkey kong was the name due to a shipping error.

  • No it wasn't. Donkey Kong came from the game's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto. He took Donkey because it also meant 'stubborn', and Kong because it meant 'ape' or 'gorilla'. So, Donkey Kong could mean Stubborn Ape or Stubborn Gorilla. Take your pick. :)

  • i know,i figured that out after i posted my comment from the gaming historian.

  • It was a fax machine error. The lady who received the fax for the name monkey kong didn't read it right. Because fax machines back then really sucked.

  • I know not when the fax machine was invented. But, back then, they had Teletype. Great invention for word only documents. And, promoting the loss of hearing. Spelling error was always possible.

  • i think it was called a game and watch

  • Yeah, the Game and Watch systems had Legend of Zelda, Ball, Manhole, etc. featuring the character today know as Mr. Game and Watch (a compilation of several Game and Watch games in one character)

  • DK's throwing Pizzas!

  • How delightfully random! ^_^

  • mario i think was called jump maan

    but then id know that

    lol!

  • Yeah He was called Jumpman

  • yeah the video game historian did a good video about it.

  • Donkey Kong looks like a bear to me in the 2600 version. When someone says "bear" and "game" I think of Altered Beast. How...unrelated?

  • the maker of DK thought of stubborn gorilla.

    donkey kong.

  • Its called a Game and Watch

  • Just so you know Mario's name in donkey kong was "jumpman."

Donkey Kong's name originated in japan where he was referred to as stubborn gorilla and they wanted him to have a better, catchier name. They thought of the first words that came to mind when you said stubborn and gorilla. Donkey and Kong.

  • lol @ donkey kong

  • This guy gets a lot of stuff wrong:

    (1) You don't need to jump when crossing the rivets. You can just walk directly across.

    (2) Atari did not have the rights to this game. Nintendo sold the rights to Coleco.
