The thing is, he's right. Obviously, "Real Americans" is a contentious term, but to the extent that it refers to people outside DC and average voters (as I took it here), it's true.

Politico is a free paper in DC that just came out last year, with a circulation of 25,000 (USA Today has 2.25 mil). Clearly most of their exposure is from the web, but compare their 2.4 million hits to the NYT at 18 mil. It's not a bad paper, but not widely read even in DC. (Sadly, how many voters even read at all?)
