  • 1st LT, you need to work on your respiratory pauses.

  • oh ok

  • lol 0:15 bang

  • @TennesseeReb1862 Shutup reb scum.

  • LOL 69

  • thts unrealistic no one would do tht in a battle and ye i wanna join the irish volenteers 2 (the 69th)

  • @theirondukesboy if you mean fire by file, that's done often as far back as napoleon era or earlier still though not always used for all infantry.

what the video doesn't show is that firing by file when done in massed formation where men can be stacked sometimes 3 or 4 ranks deep results in continuous volume of fire downrange as the file that starts first will finish reloading by the time the other end file finishes and fires again.

  • @IonoTheFanatics They almost never used fire by rank in the Civil War, they usualy were in a file of 2 ranks deep when in combat and started with a volley then fired at will. They were tought this in training but in battle it was allot easier and less confusing to just use a volley and fire at will. Although many times in Civil War battles they didn't fight in formations and used trenches and fired from cover.

  • @AUG351 yeah but that's fire by rank, not fire by file...

neither technically are used with consistent use throughout the period just like the period before it when it comes to massed firing under war condition where chaos is quick to follow all but the most disciplined troops, but they are taught and utilized if the situation fits their use.

  • @AUG351 and firing from cover is only natural since by the time of Civil War, rifles were much more common and practical than they had been before...

but given that the advancement came in such a short period, the tactics were not adapted yet for them and still based on the older smoothbore guns and that's assuming they had enough guns to equip the unit, since to the best of my knowledge they had serious shortage especially early in the war for up to date rifles.

  • @IonoTheFanatics Yeah, like the Irish 2nd Brigade were purposely given smooth bore Springfields because they wanted them to move closer into the fight instead of just staying back and firing and at Antietam the 2nd Irish Brigade used many times buck and ball like at the Bloody Lane they charged in and fired buck and ball point blank into Anderson's Brigade in the Bloody Lane.

  • i want to join that brigade

  • haha the 69th Division?! I wanna be in that one! :D

  • DAMN YANKEES!!!

  • you dont say "from the right" fire by file always starts from the right. and you should start independant fire after you fire.

  • 69th New York...Wasn't that a irish regiment?

  • yea the 69th 63rd and 88th were the 3 reg. that made up the infamous irish brigade

  • Great!

  • He sounds like Colin Hanks. Tom Hanks son.

  • Cool that shows is made by really fans of Civil War. Such show, remember about Civil War, and show children and young people that was then.

  • Wasn't this like platoon firing? except the werent extra ranks

  • what's the tactical advantage of fire by file? the intimidading constant sound of rifle shots?

  • you don't bullets by hitting same person multiple times

  • The idea was to keep a constant fire on the enemy. If you fired a volly then you would have to wait for the entire unit to reload. Firing by file allow the unit to keep firing without stoping. By the time the last man in the company fired the first had reloaded and could fire again restarting the file.

  • if it was the whole brigade doing it, tehre would be a constant stream of fire on the enemy instead of a volley at a time

  • @weverman2 constant fire on enemy unit instead of the whole unit reloading at once

  • Nice pace on the firing, but your officer needs to read the manual.

Hardees SotS - 274, the correct order is "Fire by file, squad, READY, COMMENCE FIRING"

The reenactorism would be "Fire by file, from the right, READY, COMMENCE FIRING"

Personally, for the first firing, we balance the pace by having the rear rank man calling "AIM, FIRE" for this file partner, that ensures the line controls its firing without sounding like a machine gun.

    Simon

    28th New York.

  • thats why i like fire by file it like never stops so the enemy would have a hard time to advance forward

  • I dunno, they seem like they're firing a little fast. Firing by files should be a lot more disciplined and deliberate.

  • yes, but. A good company commander would have his company fire by rank by platoons. Much better rate of fire and a lot more of it!

  • hey. that was cool. i love black powder guns! i used to have a zuave. but, sadly i sold it at a gun show. im saving up for a springfield musket now.

  • LOL PHAILSAUCE COMMANDER, he doesnt know what hes doing, theres no point in file by file, rank by rank i can understand

  • sorry, remind me of the point of firing by file

  • To look nice and pretty for the audience.

    Get a bloody Volley going.

  • i thinks it for the enemy to have a hard time to advance forward

  • advance forward? what other way do you advance? I can't even remember what i posted that you replied to, so :S

  • Faugh A Ballagh!

  • did one guy in there have on modern glasses?

  • eyeglasses were invented around 1280.

  • yes, i thought I saw a guy wearing modern framed glasses..but I was wrong...they all look period.

  • yeah i saw that too.. and also... WHAT is up with the single rank guys!? Totally negates the point of fire by file... ugh And yes someone yelled bang.. lol

  • LOL, did somebody say bang?

  • Yeah someone did , lol .

  • @Boa2250 You act like your gun fires if it doesn't go off.

  • @Boa2250 I think cos his gun didn't fire
