the lyrics are.... As i road through the desert, an outlaw i did see, trousers round his ankles, his wrists tied to a tree, he said i've just been ravaged by four bandits that were gay, as i unzipped my fly, i said it's not your lucky day. yipee i oooooh. yipee i yaaaay........
I suppose because the Shadows were from the other side of the pond, the only song I recall is Apache. They were awesome and I have a lot of catching up to do.
@sepod It's actually simply "Riders In the Sky" originally written by Stan Jones in 1948 Vaughn Moore probably had one of the most famous versions but there were many.
@whiskeyjack59 Perhaps they borrowed from Clapton? This looks early 80's and the bass line is disco which means post 1978. layla was 1970. Both are great.
@whiskeyjack59 I'm sure there's mutual respect on both sides. I love Hank Marvin's tone and phrasing. Very grateful recording technology was good back then so we can enjoy this stuff. I always have time for Cream as well, Clapton sounds so good.
@mostlycloudy14 You arrogant little twerp. There is nothing more pathetic than telling people how great you think you are. No one gives a shit. I listened to your version, apples to oranges. You try to make the song sound like elevator music, good for you.
@93MickyD1, ABSOLUTELY great song - but THIS rendition of it, with its disco Bee Gees-like embellishments make this great song sound quite cheesy. Just my opinion, but I've been playing rock/rock'nroll guitar for 35 years. Yet MOST rock musicians and fans OF THE ERA hated disco music with a purple passion - and STILL do. Disco music was basically designed for DANCING. Its frequently annoyingly repetitive rhythms and backbeats - so often the same - when applied to classic songs, simply ruin them!
@philipatoz I don't know about the others, but I love rock music and disco combos with rock riffs are awesome. And I don't even like dancing music much. You can make some pretty funky riffs/beats, which can even connect rock, disco and funk. Blondie, for example, they have Heart of Glass which is great. And The Shadows are their own class, absolutely brilliant.
This is a great version but also funny as hell with the 70's porno bass line! They should have used this in Broke Back Mountain as it sounds like it's for gay cowboys. If you want the strait cowboy version just check out what Duane Eddy did for it. It's the real deal.
Unfortunately, here, the Shads were trying to do their thing in a horrible musical era: Attempting to marry surf rock to Bee Gee disco beats, even with its Claptonish overtones, is not for the faint of heart! Disco was the cRAP music of its day - 99.9% horrible (sorry, there might be a .01% I haven't heard/can't fairly denounce). This is embarrassing for the once great Shadows, guess they thought they had to adapt to popular tastes if they wanted to keep getting bookings.
Precious few instrumentals hit this level of excitement with the listening folks. I think the Shadows have successfully crossed the barrier of age groups. My kids love it. My Sisters's grandkids love it. What's the answer? Good music over the generations! Yeah. Go Shadows.
To "Disco" out this song.... and pull it off as SMOOTHLY as the Shadows did... Is nothing less than pure GENIOUS.These Cat's were incredible. Thanks for posting!
