Night Trap wasn't violent at all. Did they even play that game? There's no blood and gore at all. It shouldn't even have been rated Mature. More like Teen. Oh well... that game was crap anyways.
Listen to that jackass from NOA. Nintendo didn't want to spend its own money to rate games so they just banned violence. Once someone else was rating them they had no problem selling violent games to kids. Not that that's even a big deal. This whole thing was a joke, and I knew it even as a kid.
@tbirddddd - I wouldn't call Howard Lincoln a jackass. He was protecting Nintendo's reputation as a family oriented game business. I mean who could blame them when their success came from the family oriented market. But you saw two years after this Senate hearing an official rating system was put into effect giving Nintendo a "license" to market games with trivial subject matter (i.e. Killer Instinct). The rest is history.
Fair enough. This whole thing really brought out the worst of everyone involved IMO. The thing that amazes me about Senate hearings is these people, who care so deeply, do no research. They don't even listen to the answers they're given. They just know the camera is on.
I guess what bugged me about Howard Lincoln was that he was trying to distance Nintendo from the industry instead of defending it. Later videos show other companies were just as bad though. Thank you for uploading these.
@Grooveraider Back then both Sega And Nintendo were afraid of government Censorship like they try to do to comic books back in the 50s. The same thing senators blame all the worlds problems on comic books and it almost killed off the comic industry at the time and in some ways they never recovered from that. But lucky video games industry leaned from the past and save them selves from being ruined.
@Se7enBeatleofDoom - I beg to differ. Sega was more gutsy than Nintendo back in the day. Just before the Mortal Kombat / Nighttrap controversey Sega took risk to release two "mature" titles: Technocop and Stormlords developed by Razorsoft. Though thse titles weren't so popular as the ones that triggered the senate hearings. As far comicbooks goes today it seems better than ever as far as variety in content for all ages. Not to mention mainstream bookstores now have a graphic novel section.
@Grooveraider I agree with you but back then Nintendo had a lot to lose. So they figured putting the blame on Sega would save them selves and take down Sega at same time. The only reason the senators were talking a rating system because they know better. It not the 50s anymore and they will not get away with censorship like they ones did! lol Back 5os comic books ended up censoring them selves like i said before it almost ended the comic book industry in America back then.
@OregonCritic those people are just showing how immature they really are.
