WHTT had a strange history. At one point it was WEEI FM in the early 80's. It did extremely well, for several years, including two-TV tie in shows called HOT HIT VIDEO(4pm weekdays and 11:30pm Sats) HTT could not compete with KISS 108,while showing strong numbers, the long run was not good. After the quick RMQ it became Oldies 103, and even that has undergone a semi-format change dropping the "oldies" and alot of 60's music gone.
That's a cool audio bit you caught. Both WHTT and WMRQ didn't last too long at 103.3; guess what they really needed was an Oldies station.. and eventually had an actual one- at least they did into the mid-90's..
I Wish WHTT Was Reborn In Boston Once And For All With A Brand New Dial.

The WHTT callsign has been used by a popular classic hits station in Buffalo for the last 20 years.

BTW, AT40 was still on WBZ-AM at the time.

Why can't stations today have jingles like the Power 103 jingle heard here?

This may have been the biggest mistake CBS Radio ever made in Boston.
Had WHTT remained a top-40/CHR format past 1986, I suspect it probably would still be a top-40 outlet today (2010).
I believe most of the WHTT airstaff stayed on after the change to WMRQ; in fact, I believe several of them remained after the flip to oldies WODS.

I have a WMRQ aircheck too, from September of 1986. I think the WHTT format change ocurred in July or August, but I'm not certain.
WMRQ lasted a year, maybe a little longer. WODS signed on in late 1987.
