Landlord/neighbor had a great experience with one of these magnificent creatures. The young intentionally fall out of the nest at a young age, to avoid predators attracted to their feces-contaminated nest. We found a chick in the pasture, and kept tabs on it. The mom kept bringing it bits of prey (rabbit) and the thing grew at an astronomical rate while still being earthbound. A full size owl is an impressive thing to sit beside, if you have the courage.

I remember hearing a great horned hooting near my parents' house, on a bitterly cold night just before Christmas. We joked that it was the owl equivalent of caroling! And later I read a story about an owl that could talk on Christmas Eve...

I volunteer at a falconry centre and just love it when the European Eagle-owls give me a hoot - you can get into a hoot battle with them as you hoot in reply. This Great Horned owl has a much deeper hoot though, with a different pattern to it. How was he injured, is he a wild rehab bird?

There is something about this sound. It evokes some memory of nature or something. I can see why Native Americans considered them sacred and they have been traditionally associated with wisdom. Athena, the Greek Goddess of Wisdom, had a familiar spirit of the Owl constantly at her side.  Respect to the Great Horned Owl!

So guys... every time in my forest in my backyard in gresham Oregon, i see this owl who in no way resembles a great horned owl, in fact the one i'v noticed that looks like this owl is a northern spotted only a little more grey. but the call is identical to this. anyone know what it could be?

Damn, I've heard that hooting before. When me and my dad was in our cottage. In Northern Finland. Imagine guys, no neighbours and only trees and a small road leads us to our cottage! and when night is approaching, you hear these guys hooting in the woods! it is scary but also nice :)
