@Carmium: It is logical to want to use the term "transsexual" for a person who changed their sex either from male to female or from female to male because that is EXACTLY what they've done; transitioned their sex. What is not logical, or make any sense is for transsexuals to deny that they are transsexuals. Or, for transgender persons to call themselves transsexuals when they know they're not. You're right, the term has to do with sex, and not gender. Why is it that people don't understand?

I ticked someone off during a psych class presentation once, because I opined that the word had gone from being a more accurate term than "transsexual," to covering absolutely anyone, and was often used by fetishists to get taken seriously by attaching themselves to more sympathetic cases. I still don't think I was far off.

@NVanWendy You're right; the term "transgender" IS an umbrella term in which we transsexuals fall into and there is nothing wrong with the idea of using one single term to identify everyone who identify as other than the established gender binary in society today. Think of "transgender" as the gender spectrum itself. People fall in different places in the gender spectrum and for some their position in the spectrum fluctuates due to natural, physiological responses in the body, but not at will.

Too many people make inappropriate sexual connections with the word TS, and when originally used, TG was, I felt, much more accurate term. What you're not considering, is that some people have gender identity disorders. Some people just feel that the gender they were born with wasn't the one they should have, and other people are born with the brain of the opposite sex. Gender-reassignment surgeries are there to help correct the problem...

Silverton is my home town and Stu is the coolest guy around. He runs the local theater, he's a huge contributor of the arts and is very involved in Silverton activities. I for one am sad that I didn't get to vote for him as the military brought me to Germany and I didn't get my ballot in time but you can bet I would have voted for him. Congrats Stu!
