I can't tell you ecstatic I am at finding this movie. I have not seen this movie in almost 20 years. I used to have a copy of it on VHS that I copied from AMC. I remember I had Dangerous Corner (wonderful movie I wish I could find again), and Sports Parade (another venue for Joel McCrea) all on the same tape. I would have given anything to see the stage production of this play which Laura Hope Crews directed. Thank you so much for posting!!
Wish I'd seen this before marrying the "dave boy" I did. Thanks so much for posting this, it was everything I've read it was and more. Love seeing Frances Dee in a meaty role, and Eric Linden is always a pleasure. They were a couple before Frances met Joel, so perhaps some of his angst over losing Hester at the end is based on Eric's own feelings.
the only problem I have with this film is that at 1:08:00 he is saying "Christine I don't think you have any decency in you" and 2 minutes before the film ends, at 1:09:53 he changes his mind and goes off with his wife. The change comes too quick. They play gives them a bit more time so you see the reason behind it. Still a good film. And great to see L.H. Crews playing a role she made famous on the stage.
Great line "I don't deny I would cut off my right hand and burn the sight out of my eyes to rid my son of you.
The play is much stronger. The Irene Dunne character declares that the mother wants the sons to suckle her breast ! Strong stuff! But of course they couldn't include those lines in the movie.
Frances Dee was so beautiful here. This is the movie where she met Joel McCrea and they were married shortly after filming ended. They remained married until his death decades later. Laura Hope Crews is so frightening in this movie.....and Eric Linden (Robert) gives new meaning to the term "Oedipus Complex."
