  • Jerry should have attacked hard after he put him on the ropes @ 4:21. Hurt and backing up was when Norton was a goner. Yeah, the Quarry that corked Mac Foster would have had N0rton outta there!

  • Norton never ducked anybody Lyle and Shavers were big punchers but unskilled boxers Quarry was an active fighter if he didn't train properly for this fight, that's his fault Plenty of fighters take fights on short notice (18 in this case not 10) Norton was 35 when he fought Shavers and is remembered as one of the greats while Quarry is remembered as a journeyman tough guy who absorbed so much punishment during his career that he couldn't even feed or clothe himself towards the end of his life

  • His managers steered him away from big punchers between the title fight with Foreman and his fight with Shavers.

Norton was a total sucker for fast starting power punchers. Quarry was active but totally washed up. A prime Quarry creams Norton.

  • Quarry went to seed quickly. There is no question he was a warrior and had a great many fights and a great many wins. It's sad that things ended the way they did for him. This version of Quarry was really just a shell of his former self and he does not look remotely fight-fit here.

  • Oscar Bonavena was to be in Quarrys place, but pulled out. Jerry Quarry said that he had only about two weeks to get ready for it.

It makes you wonder how Oscar would have done?

  • i do not believe that Norton ducked anyone. It is true that he had trouble with big punchers but we would not have know that had he not faced them.

  • Norton never ducked anybody. He and Frazier were friends. Quarry would be champion fighting today's heavyweights

  • @zulubro Norton ducked Ron Lyle. He ducked Shavers for as long as he could, and we found out why. He ducked the big hitters because he couldn't handle them. If Quarry had more than 10-14 days to prepare for this fight, he might have had a better chance. A younger Quarry would have taken Norton apart, as he did Shavers and Lyle.

  • a younger Quarry would have done much better against Norton. Quarry was pretty much over-the-hill at this point in his career

  • Look in the history books, assholes, Norton lost to Ali twice. Norton won the first one, and Ali won the last two. Get your facts straight! If Norton was so great, what else did he do in his career besides edging Ali ONE TIME. What else did Norton do? Oh I forgot, they GAVE him the WBC title in 1978 because Leon Spinks went for the larger paycheck to fight Ali in a rematch instead of Norton. Ali is the greatest people, put in your mouth, chew it, swallow it, deal with it.

  • @michaeljackson1978 @chicodelaoculta , Well quite simply, Norton had a very awkward style that always put classic boxers like Ali off center. Nortons fight for the title with Holmes was the classic example of this. Though, Norton never did well with sluggers. He lost all his fights against the serious sluggers. He was fast and could jab better than remembered. It was his awkward crab style that took him where it did.

  • @michaeljackson1978 , PS. Talking boxing with the name of "Micheal Jackson", just doesn't flow.

Doesn't fit the machismo of the sport. Big difference between the Ali shuffle, and the Moon walk,... Bitch boy. Go listen to your Thriller CD again. Don't be talking "Thrilla in Manilla" stuff.

    :D

  • @michaeljackson1978 He edged Ali? he completely outfought him, he was way too fit for Ali, and I think what they mean is Norton beat Ali twice unofficially. The third fight was complete robbery, only the obsessed Ali fans would say that Ali won the third fight.

  • @twiskins Norton was a heck of a fighter but he also ducked many tough heavyweights of that era - guys like Ron Lyle, Joe Frazier, Ernie Shavers . His management probably didn't want to risk facing guys who were hard punchers.

  • I thought Ali beat Norton 2 times and lost 1?

  • @SkywarpMach7 YES

  • @chicodelaoculta

Then what is this guy sayin that He beat Ali twice?

  • @SkywarpMach7 Norton beat Ali two times

  • after beating jerry norton hit on quarrys wife charlie sayiNG "COME UP TO MY HOTEL, AND ILL SHOW YOU WHAT A MAN I AM ,JUST LIKE I SHOWED YOUR HUSBAND TONIGHT" SCUMBAG

  • Tex Cobb did in fact go to Norton's hotel after their fight and started screaming at Norton to come out and finish things. Norton locked himself in his room and called the cops.

  • The Quarry who fought Lyle in 1970 makes Norton his bitch in five rounds

  • @ebeneezzer Norton is the best boxer of the 70's! He even beat Ali twice!

  • "Norton is the best boxer of the 70's"

    Was he fuck.

Norton gave Ali trouble because he had a decent jab and Ali never learned how to parry a jab.

Norton was horrible when backed up, couldn't fight for shit going backwards. He froze against big punchers and his crab defense didn't work against aggressive opponents who threw lots of hooks.

The proof is that Norton wanted nothing to with Quarry until Jerry was shot. Quarry from 1970 backs Norton up and gets him out of there in 5.

  • @ebeneezzer Quarry from 1970 couldn't push Ali, Frazier and certainly not Norton. Norton was a pusher himself, which is why he won against Ali.

  • He did very much push Frazier. He also gave Foreman all he could handle in sparring to the point where Archie Moore chased Quarry out of the gym.

If Scott LeDoux and Tex Cobb could back Norton up Quarry, who was a much better boxer and wayyy bigger puncher, could do it, so could Quarry.

And again, the Quarry who tamed Ron Lyle would own Norton. Norton knew this, thats why he waited until Quarry was past it to agree to fight him.

  • @ebeneezzer Well spoken, my brother. Very well spoken.

  • norton fights him in 75 when jerrys shot but didnt want no part of jerry before that.quarry took fight on 18 days notice when another opponent dropped out.

  • the quarry of 1070 knocks norton out quarry was shot and gone in this fught

  • God bless Jerry Quarry. He never had it easy in heavyweight division. He did it the hard way in the ring and was always at a physical disadvantage.

He was a handsome, very well spoken and a fine gentleman. I wish he was a doctor or a lawyer.

  • its amazing to see a white irish guy not intimidated to fight a black.iIn america today most whites are petrified of blacks.

  • Yeah, just ask that old white guy on the bus

  • Gil Clancy should have had his license removed for not stopping this fight. I was there and was screaming for them to stop it. Clancy was a disgrace to the sport.

  • Which was the worse beating for Quarry, Frazier in 1974 or this fight with Norton the following year? I read that after the Frazier bout, Quarry's eyeball was actually visible through the side of his eyelid. Seems like Frazier bludgeoned Quarry with club-like punches and Norton cut him to shreds with sharp, stabbing, pinpoint punches. Of course, Quarry trained decently for the Frazier fight, whereas he was on cocaine in Hawaii when offered the Norton bout, two weeks to prepare.

  • Must have been a pain in the butt for announcer Dillon to be doing the fight with a know it all like Condon. Did you notice how Condon needs to dispute even the most mundane points, so as to get the last word in?

Dillon > "And the Garden crowd seems to be shading toward Quarry."

Condon > "I'm not so sure."

Dillon > " Norton looks sharp doesn't he?"

Condon > "I'm not sure that's the word."

    Get over yourself, buddy.

  • Norton 218, Quarry 207

Norton 6'3, Quarry 6'0 . Fight: about even here. Quarry took this fight on 18 days notice as second backup. Norton had been training for months.

  • man im a big boxing fan, have seen hundreds of great matches... I have never seen this fight, though, and know its gonna be a rumble... RARE vid, great post!
