I am only fifteen but I love this! My friends think I am bizarre for liking this type of music but I dont see how some one can't appreciate it. It is absolutley beautiful and puts the hip hop crap you see these days to shame. Wonderful job :)
Mi chiedo come si fa a cantare Bellini così .... note ingrossate nelle gamma più bassa e queste vocali tutte nasali e a volte aperte non esiste una omogeneità vocale ... e poi dove sono gli accenti Belliniani e se per qualche volta fa una mezza voce viene fuori un vibrato di cattivo gusto. Uno dei motivi per cui non ho mai amato il mondo dei melomani è che più che amanti della musica siete amanti della critica.

@huunnelle No es necesario "saber" ! El arte se siente! Esta señora tiene una voz excepcional, sensibilidad, personalidad. Se siente que goza cuando canta, tanto que no esta preocupada de tener una cara rigida y sonriente como en Cosmopolitan. En general las mujeres critican por envidia. Las que saben de musica se expresan en medios de especialidad y con palabras decentes

Beautifully judged, never self indulgent this lady uses her art exquisitely to show us her love for and pleasure in this music, It seems she opens a window on the delights and meaning in the composers work... lovely !
If you were listening to this 'live', it would cut through to your heart, travel up your spine and tingle parts of your brain you didn't know existed. The opera voice is never really appreciated till you hear it as it should be, in a theatre.
My mother sang that song sometimes when I was a child... the song still makes my cry because it remains me to the times when she was here with me. I still miss her...

I think Cecilia Bartoli is one of the best opera singers ever. Her voice is unique, her interpretations are beautiful and she does not only the well-known pieces, but also those, that are rather unknow to a wider audience. I've seen a program about Bartoli on TV and she is simply a great woman and fantastic singer. Bravo.

None but an Italian can best sing Italian songs and only Italians and the lucky others who have lived the life Italian can get the full account. Boccabella's performances are feasts to the senses. She delivers the pure intent of the composer. It is useless for anyone not Italian to fully understand.
Cecilia wonderful as ever, she is such a dedicated artist fascinated by the history of the music and performance, she has the gift of a beautiful voice and the technique to use it to express exactly what she wants from the music... her performances are always utterly engaging and moving and I love her animated expressions... she brings these songs to life and every phrase is a beautifully crafted moment to treasure.... thanks for posting
What seperates this from any other singer (or voice) is not the techniques. People criticize based on her expressions, and things they don't like, but she has the passion. Without passion...it wouldn't be half as good.

I'm not talking about classical singing in general. There is no system here. Every artist is different. Some voices have more vibrato as they are, some less. I just said that I don't like HER vibrato, and find it too much for this piece. Nicholas Spanos has very little vibrato and sounds just sublime and expressive in his interpretation . "Straight-tone singing" is not about him. It's your definition of PJ's empty singing without any soul....

Both male and female voices can have much or very little vibrato. It doesn't depend on the sex of the artist, but the colour of the voice does. In the beginning it didn't sound that awful but the more I listened to her and saw her ugly grimaces I just couldn't stand it anymore. It's only a clucking hen to me with ugly vibrato! It's not feminine singing at all. Some people are excited when they see a woman and hear forced male low notes...Sorry.

First impression, that this was a very mannered, overdone interpretation... but as I listened, the sheer conviction of her emotions won me over, and that lovely, lovely way she reduces her voice to just a whisper. Brava Cecilia.

I don't really see any comment here against her technique though. Normally criticism against Bartoli are usually about the size of her voice but never her technique or the quality of her sound.
Um...what do you make of the comment just below, from thesmallestatom? There are those who take pleasure in condescending and those who haven't heard enough to give an informed opinion - and they are all very annoying - but it really boils down to whether you prefer processed cheese or something aged in an Italian cave with lots of delicate blue veins flowing through it. Apologies to Cecilia, but I love her ripe, earthy, tangy, unforgettable flavor. Her idiosyncrasies are glorious and enriching.
That msg is not showing up, maybe that's why I missed it. The -6 votes might have something to do with it showing only the author but not the msg. Something about this is odd from my perspective. I like the the sound her instrument produces but it just sounds a little too far back, especially given how low it is. Again, I have nothing against Bartoli's technique and since I haven't had the pleasure of hearing her live, I can't comment on those who criticize the size of her voice either.
There's a Youtube setting that allows you to see the comments given the "thumbs down". Sadly, I have mine set to to make them visible. Silly me. I sat in the back of the upper balcony of a 2000 seat theater, heard Bartoli just fine, but she wasn't singing Wagner over a full orchestra. She said years ago that she prefers halls appropriate to the music she sings, so the Met is a stretch. Don't know why volume beats quality, but some have this as a vital criteria. Listen to her CDs - she can roar.

I am not quite sure how you can say Bartoli has no 'real technique'. I am sure if you try to listen to some of her other songs (such as Agitata da due Venti) you will find that these songs are songs that couldn't be sung without some sort of technique at all.

I think she has a very pretty voice, but I don't like a lot of the inflection. I think she does a very good job but I prefer Pavarotti when he sings this song as it is a classical Tenor piece.
Not at all, originally it was written for a baritone or a mezzo :) the original tessitura is lower. C4-Eb5. Pavarotti sings it about a major third up.
I do agree that it is a song more fitting for Tenors but Bartoli does it justice as well. :) They each give it a different flavor which I quite like as it makes me see and feel the song in more than one way. :)

I think Cecilia Bartoli is one of the best opera singers ever. Her voice is unique, her interpretations are beautiful and she does not only the well-known pieces, but also those, that are rather unknow to a wider audience. I've seen a program about Bartoli on TV and she is simply a great woman and fantastic singer. Bravo.

She delivers the pure intent of the composer. It is useless for anyone not Italian to fully understand.

What seperates this from any other singer (or voice) is not the techniques. People criticize based on her expressions, and things they don't like, but she has the passion. Without passion...it wouldn't be half as good.

In classical singing one should let go of the voice and allow vibrato to happen. Straight-tone singing is an ornament, especially in bel canto.

I'm not talking about classical singing in general. There is no system here. Every artist is different. Some voices have more vibrato as they are, some less. I just said that I don't like HER vibrato, and find it too much for this piece. Nicholas Spanos has very little vibrato and sounds just sublime and expressive in his interpretation . "Straight-tone singing" is not about him. It's your definition of PJ's empty singing without any soul....

I guess that she believed herself that she is a "Goddess" and can pay attention only to technique, but hers is ugly too! She forgot that technique is not the purpose of art but just a means.TRUE ARTISTS serve the BEAUTY! I just bought a CD where she sings Casta Diva. It's just HORROR! It's not belcanto, Casta Diva, not singing at all! The version on YT isn't that bad! She must be the Goddess of UGLY SINGING then!LOL

In the beginning it didn't sound that awful but the more I listened to her and saw her ugly grimaces I just couldn't stand it anymore. It's only a clucking hen to me with ugly vibrato! It's not feminine singing at all. Some people are excited when they see a woman and hear forced male low notes...Sorry.

There are those who take pleasure in condescending and those who haven't heard enough to give an informed opinion - and they are all very annoying - but it really boils down to whether you prefer processed cheese or something aged in an Italian cave with lots of delicate blue veins flowing through it. Apologies to Cecilia, but I love her ripe, earthy, tangy, unforgettable flavor. Her idiosyncrasies are glorious and enriching.

That msg is not showing up, maybe that's why I missed it. The -6 votes might have something to do with it showing only the author but not the msg. Something about this is odd from my perspective. I like the the sound her instrument produces but it just sounds a little too far back, especially given how low it is. Again, I have nothing against Bartoli's technique and since I haven't had the pleasure of hearing her live, I can't comment on those who criticize the size of her voice either.

There's a Youtube setting that allows you to see the comments given the "thumbs down". Sadly, I have mine set to to make them visible. Silly me. I sat in the back of the upper balcony of a 2000 seat theater, heard Bartoli just fine, but she wasn't singing Wagner over a full orchestra. She said years ago that she prefers halls appropriate to the music she sings, so the Met is a stretch. Don't know why volume beats quality, but some have this as a vital criteria. Listen to her CDs - she can roar.

I am not quite sure how you can say Bartoli has no 'real technique'. I am sure if you try to listen to some of her other songs (such as Agitata da due Venti) you will find that these songs are songs that couldn't be sung without some sort of technique at all.

I think she has a very pretty voice, but I don't like a lot of the inflection. I think she does a very good job but I prefer Pavarotti when he sings this song as it is a classical Tenor piece.

Not at all, originally it was written for a baritone or a mezzo :) the original tessitura is lower. C4-Eb5. Pavarotti sings it about a major third up.
