  • great work, really helped me figure out the fricken second riff

  • thanks dude! the best why georgia tutorial so far.

  • really helpful stuff, but you should quit singing or take a course or something ;) take care man

  • I found it informative and entertaining. Good work. (P.S. I don't care if you use your thumb)

  • thank you so much for your tutorial.Nice one!

  • hey great work both the songs "your body is wonderland" and "why Georgia".do u have a social network connection?since i am learning guitar for about 2 years all by myself cuz i have a 13 year experience of playing hawaiin guitar learned professionally and can played instruments like octopad, keyboard, congo bongo, tabla, drums,i can catch the lesson you provide online. For spanish guitar i need to connect to u so can u plz reply so that i can connect to you.i am connected to orkut, facebook.

  • great video u r really good what kind guitar is that?

  • an acoustic one...

  • this can b played with any guitar besides an uke right?

  • you from new z?

  • John Mayer uses his thumb on the E string often. Tell ya what, you get better than John Mayer, and then you can shoot HIM a couple of pointers of what is 'better form'.

  • Yeah, if you look at it from a classically closed-minded view, you're right, it is bad form. However, John Mayer isn't exactly what you could call a classical guitarist... at all. He's got blues roots, and his use of his thumb has been incorporated due to that background. You're right, it's definitely harder to play some chords with your thumb, but if you look at "I Don't Need No Doctor", using his thumb makes a lot more sense do to the quick changes on the E, G, and B strings...

  • Seconded ... there's no rule of thumb, pardon the pun, concerning the placement of your thumb. In some cases, it is just easier to use your thumb to play/silent the A-string and the low-E string -- both cases involve breaking classical form.

Consider the open D-chord. For it to sound pitch perfect, you have to use your thumb to silent the low-E as you strum the chord.

With experience, you learn to vacillate between different forms to make a tune sound 'right'.

  • Yea, well I'm a more all around player actually. And since my hands are fairly big it is really uncomfortable to keep my thumb back because of the size of my hands. I just prefer the easier way for some songs. But yea, i get what you mean about "I dont need no doctor". There is as song by Paul gilbert called "Marine layer" where you need your thumb for an F chord so you dont bar the whole first fret because you are individually picking the open strings as well. I totally agree with you tho.

  • theres no techniques dude, its just how the individual can make the sounds, who says you can't play with you thumb for one bar then the conventional style the next?

  • dude, the point isn't his voice. it's a guitar tutorial. he's just showing it added in.

  • Why not take the two seconds and tell us the tabs- stupid if u ask me

  • is their any muting that goes on in the intro? or do you just let all the strings ring?

  • good lesson 4 stars!!!

  • you're awesome!! good job.. keep it up!

  • This song is extremely difficult to play, so NOBODY should get discouraged. I can play it, but it is hard to keep it mistake free. The part he shows at 2:18 is really hard to make it sound smooth. If I were recording this as a musician there is a way easier way to play it, but John Mayer kept it. But if you notice he simplified it when played live.

  • Extremely difficult..hardly

  • Awesome man you are very good!!

  • Listen.. I'm sure you're really good and all, no doubt about that. But when you put your fingers on the fret you just say "Put it here" or some dumbass instruction no one can use.. Fix it m8..

  • Just take a look at a tab or something... He's doing his way.. and I like it that way

  • he's done a spot on job mate! I learn't it in five minutes with his tutorial. so shut your pie whole and get a guitar beginners book! and read! x ta ta love

  • yeah i actually found this agonizingly slow. "put your finger on this fret this string." dude just look at it. it's all basic chords. if you can't learn from this you need to seriously start playing with people and learning songs from them. and by ear.

  • agreed i wouldnt say basic chords but ya agreed lol.

  • thnx..helped a lot..but I had to look at the tabs a lot to understand the chords you were playing..would have been really useful if you showed on the chord formations on the video itself...thanks again

  • he's teaching a way hard way. holy cow, the way you do it is ex termly hard. there are easier ways.

  • welcome to the world of john mayer. watch 'neon' and 'wait until tomorrow' in his 'where the light is' LA gig. they're two COMPLETELY different playing styles. funk-driven slap acoustic into face-melting electric comparable to hendrix. you will FUCKING weep.

  • sooo hfuckign hardd

  • your voice could do with some work but great guitar tutorial still.

  • cool thanks 4 postin

  • It's a lot harder to learn the right way with your thumb on the little verse diddy

  • dont sing

  • Thanks dude!

  • cool right?

  • slower with cam to guitar?

  • Maaaate! Kia Ora for clearing some of my f*cked up interpretation! Its the little notes that count! Help me out with Clarity and 83 and you shall reign supreme!

    Cheers1

  • your a hair piece

  • You make Part 2 look so easy! It's pretty hard.

  • Good job bro. I am still learning the song but you really helped me along the way. I will be refering back to this video.......

    keep it up

  • awesome... very usefull... thanks

  • 2nd part of the verse = hardest part :/

still...you're the man when it comes to jm tabs :D

  • nz : D

  • this helps alot! thx.... more please!!!!!

  • this was very helpful, thanks for contributing to the world in some positive way rather than complaining about it through a wall post

  • horrible. actually explain where to place your fingers on the neck. it sucks just watching you. not helpful.

  • mate, hence why he tells u where to get the tabs at the beggining...

And once you've been playing a loonngg time, u will be able to follow along by just watching him :) trust me, its really good!

    Keep the faith :)

  • Good job man, its definitely a big help. hope you lots more coming.

  • hey thanks man your really good i can play that 4 my sister now thanks

  • Awesome thank you for this good tutorial

  • Nice job

  • yeahha! NZ represent!

  • can you please say the actual chords for the pre-chorus? You use your fingers to form the chords in a way that is unfamiliar to me.

  • i agree

  • the return of the amateur hour,,,lol

  • @chikitakooki.....

    you're deffeneltly right bro LOL

  • Dude, we need more people like you in this world who give back to the public. Good job man, keep it up.

i can play it without the slapping cuz i dont know where it belongs

  • i only do it every once in a while cuz it sounds like john does it every once in a while.

  • haha

yea i get what you mean

but the thing is before i didnt even know how to do the slapping thing and when i figured it out

i had no clue where it belonged

you should do a cover of your body is a wonderland and message in a bottle and free fallin

  • I'm having trouble with the pinky hammer on... any suggestions? (Part 2)

  • It's a tough rif at first, keep at it and start SLOW.

Thanks for the positive comments, glad it helped.

As for the singing, I don't understand why you feel the need to post about it :/ I did it to try and help people with the timing, and for the lolz :D My harmonies are beautiful bahaha

  • I agree. Massive lolz beats all.

If either one of us was a women, we would be having babies at this point.

  • I used the plural form of woman on accident, but whatevs.

I just noticed you posted this video the week I had my first guitar lesson.

    WE WERE MEANT TO BE.

  • i didnt quite get that

  • man you are awesome

  • great lesson, but it sounds like you need thicker strings or something, your guitar sounds very tinny

  • I think it sounds 'steely' not.. 'tinny'.. Considering the fact that he's most likely using steel strings..

  • Very good lesson! shot

  • Wow! this helped so much! :)

    Thanks!

  • great job. you have very good picking skills. infact, you're so good it makes it look easy and I'm having a hard time picking up your right hand technique. could you please demonstrate how you do you picking in your songs? thanks

  • Great tute dude!

  • I thought this was a good tutorial. You could need a couple of singing lessons though. (Sorry, but it was really false...)

    :)

  • It wasn't a singing tutorial, it was a guitar tutorial. =\
