Very easy for this to happen! I am a certified arborist, and there have been many accidents like this. ANSI and OSHA says stay 10 feet away when someone is cutting with a saw on the ground for this very reason.

This really did happen. The town isn't far from where I live. Her husband was cutting/trimming a tree when she walked up behind him without warning. He swung the saw around after a cut and caught her in the throat. This was a very tragic accident that he will have to live with the rest of his life.

Yes, very possibly an accident...Many years ago I nearly gutted a friend with a chainsaw. He walked up behind me as I moved the running saw from my right hand to my left and allowed the bar to swing around behind me. I needed my right hand free to move a tree limb out of the way.

The tip of the chainsaw bar tore the front of his shirt but never touched his skin. I won't allow anyone near me when I'm operating a chainsaw, or any similar tool.

A horrible thing to live with if not for dumb luck.
