He's great. I am an experienced session drummer. When I started getting a good deal of high end work the demands on me were greater. Not so much with the complexity of what I was being asked to play but with the execution of simple parts. It wasn't a matter of "can you play this" rather, it was can you play this and make it kick more ass then you have ever kicked in your life. Suddenly drummers like Travis Barker and Taylor Hawkins appealed to me in a way that I never thought they would.
this is what he is...let him be himself, we all know that Travis may not be the best drummer but as for now he's great in what he's doing as a punk rock drummer...this is what we need in the industry in terms of variation of musician from different types of music...

Man no matter what any of these guys say, you were a childhood inspiration to me and still still are Barker. Keep drummin and making that sound I love.
We, as drummers, can say what we want about him and critique him to the end of time. The fact remains that Travis has successfully allowed himself to play drums for a living (a nice one at that) and he does what he loves all day every day. I can't say the same. I play drums cause they are my passion, but if I could support my family using my passion, it would be awesome.

Drums/Percussion are musical instruments and I laugh when someone that people admire as a professional drummer/musician in the music industry is just good at best. you do not play in the Royal Philharmonic if you just "jam". Those are real musicians and it's not about style of music it's about being proficient at your instrument. He does not need to play in a symphony or concerto or opera. He plays in a punk band... Don't expect him to accent woodwinds and french horns. Travis is good, very good. I feel that a couple drummers take drumming to a level of more than just drumming. Check out Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt and Zach Hill, currently in Death Grips. Those drummers changed the way I think about music in general, just with their playing alone.
He is super flashy which is why people who dont play drums think he is good. But if you actually play drums (or any instrument) you will see he is not that great...

I do know that double bass drum is not hard once you get used to it, and any drummer can succeed in it.. there are some things travis barker does that makes my jaw drop.. he is also so open minded, and can play so many different styles, which makes him a better drummer.. and i know that he doesnt even compare to like dennis chambers, or stewart copeland.

So when you see Joey J> play he will be playing fast metal. Its what he does to make money. When you see Neil you will see rock and fusion. When you see Someone like Travis he is a rarety he is what I would call a personality that got famous drumming. So he has oportunity now to play with alot of groups for a song or two and branch.

what people need to realize is travis will be known as one of the greats not because of his skill at the drums but how different his overral style is. he plays in a GOOD punk band... and for solo projects comes out with GOOD hip hop music. off the top of the head i cant think of anyone else that does what he's doing

I would love to see you try to do half of what he does. It takes talent, skill and serious rhythm. No dynamic? This is a solo, listen to songs he plays for bands, there are definitely dynamics. Counting rests? Find me one song where he comes in at the wrong time. I suppose you'll criticize the way he holds his sticks, too. Wow.

That's because the vast majority of people are ignorant. Drums/Percussion are musical instruments and I laugh when someone that people admire as a professional drummer/musician in the music industry is just good at best. you do not play in the Royal Philharmonic if you just "jam". Those are real musicians and it's not about style of music it's about being proficient at your instrument. It's more like theater really... it's more about being seen than heard, thus the rotating drums on a crane

He does not need to play in a symphony or concerto or opera. He plays in a punk band... Don't expect him to accent woodwinds and french horns. If you are saying he is not a musician because he doesn't wear a tux and play with a conductor, then please realize times have changed. And I bet he could play in a symphony if he desired.

Being a player and teacher myself for nearly 30 years I understand a thing or two. But don't get me wrong, he is a great showman and he does amazingly well for the genre he represents. Now whether or not he can play with an orchestra or symphony... until he actually does it, no one can answer that.

Travis is good, very good. I feel that a couple drummers take drumming to a level of more than just drumming. Check out Brian Chippendale of Lightning Bolt and Zach Hill, currently in Death Grips. Those drummers changed the way I think about music in general, just with their playing alone.

I do know that double bass drum is not hard once you get used to it, and any drummer can succeed in it.. there are some things travis barker does that makes my jaw drop.. he is also so open minded, and can play so many different styles, which makes him a better drummer.. and i know that he doesnt even compare to like dennis chambers, or stewart copeland.

@arnyplamyaburs15 Agree other than one mistake. And its one that soooo many people make. Drummers are only known for the style they get famous in for the most part. So when you see Joey J> play he will be playing fast metal. Its what he does to make money. When you see Neil you will see rock and fusion. When you see Someone like Travis he is a rarety he is what I would call a personality that got famous drumming. So he has oportunity now to play with alot of groups for a song or two and branch.
