I believe this game is similar to Dante's Inferno. In Dante's Inferno, Dante betrays his beloved Beatrice with a slave woman. Then Lucifer comes along, and when Beatrice is dead, he takes her as his own queen. You end up going through the 9 Circles Of Hell to reach Lucifer. You keep decending and each circle has its own meaning. Here you keep climbing from Hell because Vincent "betrayed" his beloved Katherine. He also went through stages. Yup, I really think those 2 games share things in common.
