Haven't seen Juno, but if Jennifer's Body is anything to judge Diablo Cody's writing by, I will not waste my time. JB was total dreck. I have rarely been so bored in the cinema.
But you lose a lot of credibility for me by valuing Juno above Lars and the Real Girl Lorenzo... that's appreciating smart-alec hipster posturing above genuine emotion and realistic writing.
I work in a DVD rental store and most customers and all staff prefer Lars to Juno. Just sayin...
Oh, please. If you know anything about the movie it's based on a real events. The guy dies, I don't know anyone who saw the movie who doesn't know that going in.I'll spoil another one for you: Titanic. The boat sinks.
That is a ridiculous and deliberately confrontational comment to make: I was three when the event happened. This isn't a story that has carried over much to English culture. and I knew the movie was based on real events, I just chose not to find out all about the ins and outs before watching it. Is that not understandable? I'm sorry if I offended your arrogant and snobbish film going tendencies: if I choose to watch Schindler's List again I'll be sure to have my book about Nazi Germany to hand.
The point is that it doesn't ruin the movie. It's not what's important about the story at all. It's says he died on the cover of the book the movie is based on, so blame the publisher for "spoiling" the movie. It's like the whole point of watching the movie that he died. The story was written by a guy who retraced the dead guy's steps and pieced together what happened. It's generally understood. If anything he spoiled Easy Rider, where it actually IS a surprise that they die at the end.
It's a bit worrying that these two got a vote for who wins the award - but they haven't seen all the films? That can't be a good way to do it, surely they should see all the movies
There are about 300 qualifying movies every year. Many are released at the very end of the year. Further, the time between the nominations and the final voting is relatively short. As it is, many Academy members see lots of movies that they hate (in my case, violent movies) and would never see if left to themselves. And I challenge you to sit through the whole of "I'm Not There." I love Dylan and all of the actors in it and it's unbearable.
I say we've had enough films about unwanted pregnancies, JUNO, WAITRESS, KNOCKED UP. Reality? I don't think so. I'm almost a geezer and would like to be as sharp as these two!
Lorenzo I always agree with you except for CLOONEY! Come on the dude cannot act. He is always Clooney-and he never gets into the ZONE when he acts. he has never had a sublime moment in his life. The movies of today are all about emotions. Being of the sublime isn't on most people's radar so we have to regress to garish emotion and gore. Gore is in because our lives are pathetically robotic and people want to be shaken up. Most art is devoid of the profound feel of spirit-just pure base thought.
You guys are a GEM on youtube, an absolute joy! I don't know how I found you guys, but I'm SOOOO glad I did. Your enthusiasm and joy for film is just absolutely inspiring and contagious... please keep making more of these review/anecdotal videos!
Why do you give away everything from every movie, Lorenzo? I will never watch you again because I will just have movies ruined for me. You should know better. At least put a 'spoilers' warning up... I really like your reviews and such, but with this Oscars "show" you are listing the movies and what happens in them as to who is the villian, who dies, and specific plot happenings that shouldn't be ruined for people.
I watch these after I've seen the movie itself. Marsha and Lorenzo are like my movie freak friends, only they know loads more than them. So it's fun to hear what they thought of a movie when I get home from the theater.
For 80 year olds, these two are sharp and "with it," especially Lorenzo, who shockingly likes films like "Juno" and "Boogie Nights." As for the Oscars, it's going to be neck and neck between "Juno" and "No Country For Old Men."
Lorenzo is hipper than most 20 somethings, and I know, I'm a 21 yr old film student XD And Lorenzo could outwit all of my hipster friends in a pop cultural showdown anyday!
oh i love oscar votes and predictions! i used to write movie reviews for my company news letter and did oscar predictions one year. it was a lot of fun. thanks for this and i'll be looking for part 2.
hah ha. Love it. I personally think There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men are the big dogs in the house. Juno just seemed to witty and hip for a 16 yr old. Good movie but wasnt believable. Especially the Parents reaction. And i agree Philip Semor Hoffman is hilarious in Charlie Wilson's War. But i also like Javier whats his evil face in No Country For Old Men. Its gonna be an old fashion duel at the oscars this year. Gonna be good.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
This old guy doesn't know shit about Into the Wild. No wonder the Oscars are complete bullshit...you have people two weeks away from death voting on movies when they should be sipping their Ensure.
I really wasn't impressed with Michael Clayton. I liked the actress and the supporting actor, but the lead and the film itself brought me nowhere new and left me wondering why this wasn't a pre-quel to some Ocean's 11 type film.
