No, he just used the phrases "ground zero", which existed before 9/11 and does not just mean "location of the World Trade Centre", and "modernist explosion". Modernism was a cultural movement in the first half of the 20th century, not an actual explosion.
Well, in truth didn't Nostradamus predict some sort of 1000-year east/west war starting on or around the new millenium? At first they all thought he might have meant Saddam Hussein, but Bin Laden might gave been the "king in the east" (or whatever he wrote).
uh, that is a sad attempt at a connection. The term Ground Zero has been used quite a bit since it was birthed in the Atomic age. Next you will be saying the building formed an eleven-oooohh stop being silly.
What a chilling piece of footage! Hughes's series was aired 4 years before 9/11, yet there the camera is, showing the NY skyline with the Twin Towers as he talks of ground zero and the modernist explosion. Eerie in its unconscious prescience...
Bob Hughes knows how to turn a phrase better than any critic I know. You may not always agree with him, but you'll never be offended (or bored) by his use of the English language. Be sure to read his great little books on fly fishing (A Jerk On One End) and Barcelona (The Great Enchantress).
this is an utterly stupid video.

It all makes sense now.
We all know that Robert Hughes loathes most post-modern art.
American art critics must have used their vast understanding of culture to subliminally influence the Taliban into blowing up the twin towers.
At this point they knew that it was only a matter of time before some important post-modern creative person made a pretentious remark about it.
In 2002 Stockhausen did and the critics chuckled heartily at their success.
The truth is out there.
Art critics did 9/11.
