Actualy their manager saw a "Secos & Molhados" concert (a psychodelic, 60's band from brazil) that was on tour in mexico.. they wore make-up and the outfits too (but without the characters thing)...
and based on that he came up with the "costumes/ make-up" idea.

I heard in an interview (not sure which) that Ace just wasn't getting any better at his instrument, and/or bringing anything else to the table. It was the same old same old with Ace, they wanted to change the sound of KISS and everything and Ace couldn't deliver. Couldn't play up to their standards of what they required at that time. He also was always drunk and/or high, missed practices or was late, screwed up live cause of drugs and alcohal and all of that. Ace is my hero however! =]
