The ports are underneath because:

If they were on the back (pointing towards wall), wall mounting would be rather tricky. You can't 'hang' it like a picture frame.

If they were on the side the set up would look messy. People don't like that.

i just got a 50'' samsung plasma i love it, to be honest i know everyone is suppose to hate plasma, but the image quality is far superior to anything i've ever seen on an LCD. LCD's cant really every display true blacks, because of the backlight, contrast ratio is crucial for me
