She is Japanese but her family moved to Fushun, Liaoning in 1906, i.e. 25 years BEFORE Japan invaded NE China. Her grandfather was from Saga, and her mother was from Fukuoka, so she is 100% Kyushu people 九州人. She grew up in Fushun and Beijing, and that's why her accent is standard Mandarin. When she made movies in Shanghai, people actually thought she is Sino-Russian, as she does look a bit Caucausian and she speaks standard Mandarin, which is the language of the Sino-Russian.
There have always been questions about the race of Yamaguchi Yoshiko (or Rikoran) as she was known in Japan and Li Xianglan in China. Many in Japan, where she eventually lived, thought she might be Chinese or part-Chinese. She had been born in Manchuria and studied in Beijing under a Chinese patron. She spoke Chinese, Russian, Japanese and English, so people were curious about her race. Reports state that both her parents were Japanese, but some reports claim she had Russian

The singer is Yamaguchi. She isn't Chinese at all. I believe she has a Japanese father but adopted by a Taiwanese family in Formosa(Taiwan), Japan. To me she looks so much Taiwanese than Japanese because Taiwanese have Dutch and aboriginal bloods, so I wonder if she has a Taiwanese mother which is common in Taiwan during her time.
No, ethnically, she is an asian. She went back to Japan at the age of 26, and she had a multiple important careers. As a writer(one of her book is called "The truth of the poems of the Arab Guerilla that nobody wrote"), then as a politician(the upper House of the Japanese parliament) for 18 years(1974-1992). Though the most famous part of her life was in Chinese period, she has an acomplished life & career in Japan. She is still alive at 89 years old.
Yay, another rare movie scene! There is a very good book about this actress that just came out, "The China Lover", that made me want to watch her movies. Sadly, many of them are so old that it's very hard to find copies, and many of her movies made in Manchuria were destroyed or never released in the first place. I like to see her singing in other languages like Russian, even if she doesn't speak it as well as she does Chinese. Her voice is still very beautiful, and she is very talented.
indeed, she has a BEAUTIFUL sweet trained voice. no doubt about that. i just wished, i could understand what she is saying ( lyrics)????? i like her voice also :)
So the question is, is this a Japanese film? Made on location, of course, outside Japan.

My translating is not very good, but I hope you can understand:
The yellow flowers are flying.
It float around everywhere on the grassland.
Spread the wings dazzlingly, flutter on the sky.
The golden bird! singing the melody that I croon.
Soaring on the sky amazingly.
Enjoying the lovely sound.
