Michael Jackson openly and often gave the credit for this move to those who taught him. He perfected it and made it universal but he never forgot those who taught him how to do it.
True. Somewhere before or beyond cameras, someone must've moved like this and better. MJ was a great talent, but Jeffrey & the brothers looked great a bit earlier, too. Viva la D.C.'s Soul Train :)
get off michael jackson's nuts. word up. look, michael jackson is in heaven somewhere playing with some baboon and shit, but this nigga right here did the shit first and did it real to real, hot to def, word is bond, so stand down and stop runnin up on niggas wit all that wack shit. word up. michael, shmicael
Actually Jerome "casper" Candidate (not sure if I have his last name correct) taught MJ how to do the backslide. Jeff sent Casper to work with MJ, not sure why Jeff is calling it the moonwalk. The moonwalk goes forward as if walking on the moon. No one walk backwards on the moon. As far as doing this move before, back the 1940's it was called the "get off" because hoofers used it to get off stage.
MJ just cant stand the fact that their little hero didn't invent the moonwalk! bill Bailey did the same move in 1955 at The Appollo. Who cares if MJ 'did it better' he still ripped the move from someone else!
What, I have to tell Bill Gates that MJ didn't 'invent' the moonwalk and that Bill Bailey did the same thing 30 years earlier, and he did it better?
Ok. Wait though, should I also be as sad as you and quote a line from a musical? Hmm, how about "You Can't Stop The Beat" from Hairspray. That was a film that had been done before by other people so it's quite appropriate. Although the 2007 version was better than the original.
And yeah, Ive watched both versions of Hairspray. Whats wrong with watching a film that exposed the rampant racism that prevented integration of blacks and whites on TV?
Oh, but I'll bet you've never seen it and assumed I watched it to see Zac Efron dancing, or John Travolta in drag.
Tut tut, research what you're saying before trying to appear witty hun. That way you might not look as stupid as you clearly do now
@LisaKee73 Ok dudette! Glad you know which hairspray to use! If imma watch anything that deals with racism or integration imma watch Roots or The color purple or Ruby Bridges or something! If i wanted to go all musical then I can get the same effect but better by watchin Dream Girls! Something! And why would i do research on hairspray...i dont even understand why you even made that last comment! I dont even know who Zac Efron is!
@NDionneG005 Lol! Yeah, you go do that dude. You go watch Roots. You go watch the make believe and lie infested story of how it all went down. Go ahead and pop that sucker in your dvd player.
@LisaKee73 Blacks want to be segregated in more films. Or at least some in the YT community does. I saw a person on here say why aren't there more films that feature a black cast. And I had to remind him that they tried that already with Soul Plane.
@515sbest i know that`a righ and i agree micheal jackson moon walk was good(but from what ive seen jeff`s was better ive seen people do the backslide aka moon walk in sneakers on the sidewalk. now that`s ganster. peace am out
umm chaplin and bill bailey aint moon walk.. they might have done somethin similar but there is a big defference between this one and theirs.. stop hatin cause you know none of you can do it and your prolly racist and just wanna belive a white guy made the moon walk up
The guy doing the "backslide" in this video isn't even Jeffrey Daniel! He's the taller one in the middle, just watching, and then joining later. Regardless, I think the guy who did it in this video was sexy and amazing!
None of you have ever realized Bill bailey did the moon walk in 1955, way before this guy ever even thought about it. lol He even did it better than these guys. These guys are putting too much on it, bailey did it on the spot and natural.
I remember when this episode of Soul Train aired. MJ hadn't made thriller yet. MJ didn't improve it either, he was just in a position after Billy Jean hit the top of the charts to make it popular. Bill Bailey was the first person to be recorded doing the Moonwalk. These brothers on Soul Train perfected it.
@Legalbust1 LoL those "Brothers" are actually trying to perfect Charlie Chaplin a white dude who was moonwalking back in the 1910's so dont hate on Michael cause there all just trying to be Charlie Chaplin
why on earth was it ever named the "moonwalk" anyway? It should always be the backslide and don't compare mike to jeffrey cause really I no alot of people who got tired of mike doing that dance all the time, me mainly, and jeff was not surpassed by mike. there are a lot of people who also do that dance on the same level as mike, your just used to him doing it a lot. Jeffrey just keep being as you are and keep on shining on, lots of haters out there!
Okay, maybe he saw it there first but... he PERFECTED it, Michael made it look like he defied gravity, while these guys aren't even NEARLY as smooth as Michael's interpertation is.
@26bboycat lol he made the robot please! MJ was talented and had the best style in a non-basis point of view but he wasnt the best dancer in any form he was pretty dam good but not the best bro... im not saying he couldnt of been the best
Ill be honest this move was done way before the 70's and has been done by countless dancers. As 62# stated bill bailey is one of the dancers who also did this move. My grandmother used to say "Theres nothing new under the sun". i also found a 1930's video with them doing the heel toe. Freaking amazing
It was really cool, but the first real moon walk that I have seen was preformed by Bill Bailey during one of his tap routines. That was a really great moon walk though.
You have to admit from watching this, Jeffrey Daniels moves on 00:28 were pretty revolutionary and under rated before Michael or breakdancing. That was in the late 70s.
I don't dance, but if I did, I'd be a pop-locker and stuff. I'm a girl, but I've never liked the way women dance, it's usually just gyrating and wiggling stuff, it's boring. It's always the guys that really do the cool moves.
@kellywell05 That's Because you lames didn't know shit about Black Dance moves thanks to MTV you would of never heard of Micheal Jackson or Prince Because that was the only Black artists that MTV would play now look look at them it crazy in the hip-hop world......peace
It doesnt matter who taught him how too do it!!!!! Michael made it famous!!! The back slide is old!!!! it was created by old school dancers in the Cab Calloway days!!!! my father showed me A video!!! But the variations that was created by Jefferey Daneils and his crew as well as the Electric Buggaloos are what made it So street!!!!!! Jeff can take some credit if you watch The Full Video of the Soul Train performance you will see The Original Variations that Jefferey and EcLipse did!!!!!!!!
JD did not teach michael the backslide. the other two dancers, derek jaxson and geron candidate are the ones who taught him. Michael just like JD dancing. michael seen derek and geron do the backslide on soul train and o he had his management call them and they worked on it for 3 days. michael dismissed derek because of his behavior so geron was the one who taught and help him perfect it. that's the story behind how michael learned it. JD had nothing to do with it.
If Daniel would lie about being the choreographer for the BAD and SMOOTH CRIMINAL videos, why should one believe he taught Michael the movement (though I know a few fans did fall from the turnip truck)? That lie stands to be true as that statement he made to a Nigerian journalist stating "The concept of Shalamar was created around him!" Such utter B.S. What's next Jeffrey, you'll tell the world you created and taught 'Lockin?'
STRAIGHT FROM WIKIPEDIA: Vincent Paterson collaborated with Michael Jackson and Madonna on various projects, choreographing Madonna's Blond Ambition Tour, Madonna: Truth or Dare documentary. He created Madonna's "Marie Antoinette/Vogue" performance for the MTV Awards. He choreographed Jackson's "Bad" tour as well as BAD and SMOOTH CRIMINAL videos and other Jackson music videos and live performances. He also directed the music video for Jackson's hit "Blood on the Dance Floor"
Iwonder how come they dont mention how the Jefrey Daniels learned how to pop and backslide from Electric Boogaloos who had already debuted poppin and backsliding on Soul Train years before? Kids was doing it at dances at Crenshaw High back in the day this is bullshit hype marketing. Whatever the case ain't nobody put the singing and dancing down like my baby Mike
@plussizedgoddess Girl you are so right. The two gentlemen dancing in this clip w/Danie, Casper & Cooley were the ones who taught Michael the move, as well as Jeffrey (Daniel was just a hanger-on), and if they had the platform with being members of a popular singing group at that time, the mystery of the MOONWALK would be know no more, but because Daniel had the advantage he continues to advertise his deception, abducting preeminence from all members from the Electric Boogaloos!
@plussizedgoddess I know my comments may be removed by morning, and don't be surprised if yours are, too, but in all recent interviews and clips of Jeffrey explaing the story of the BACKSLIDE, have you noticed he never ONCE invited the two gentlemen, or other members from the Boogaloos to assist him with his presentation? I guess if I was him I wouldn't make such an atrocious slip-up of inviting my hangmen to my hanging, also!
@plussizedgoddess Thing is, Daniels never claimed he invented these dances in the first place. He says strictly that he taught them to Michael, which is true. Now, if he'd insisted he'd invented the dances then yeah you'd have a point.
@SnotRockets55 Yeah you make a strong point because Bill Bailey's backslide/moonwalk is the oldest version by far I have seen which was during a tap dance performance in the 50s I believe.
@SnotRockets55 Daniels never speaks on who taught HIM we all know in the hood Crenshaw area cause we was already seeing it in the clubs 24/7 when Jeff was tryin to jock Shabbadoo and The Lockers before Soul Train don't get me wrong Jeff could dance but back in the day they called him a wannabe
MJ said these kids on a street were doing the, (backslide) & he approached them about learning it.
JD was hired for *private lessons - though MJ had a knack of learning very fast & continued to practice on his own, in his mom's kitchen.
He made it his own - incorporating his own moves /touches to it, (as with other dance moves he did). With this move though, his own twist to it was to often land on his tip-toes at the end.
MJ in his book, Moonwalk, said that he saw kids doing it, first.
Michael Jackson openly and often gave the credit for this move to those who taught him. He perfected it and made it universal but he never forgot those who taught him how to do it.
