After seeing a clip of Monkey Magic,i so desperately wanted to fly on a cloud...i still want to now and hey maybe Richard Branson may make that possible for me one day in the future! Many thanks, great visuals again :)
Isn't it interesting how clouds make us want to fly? :-) I'm hoping for a future of human flight with minimal machinery... jetman and bat-wing-suit base jumping come fairly close! Cheers!
Huge indeed - last I heard they were calling this the largest in L.A. County history. You're not kidding - it would be hard to imagine how much worse this would have been with high winds. Our fires crews did an amazing job keeping this from getting any worse than it did. =)
Can we all wake up now?The Socal fires of summer 2009 were the work of Jihadis using paid illegals or local sleepers. They wiped out a large piece of the landscape, wrecked the health of many, and destroyed lives and property just as in 911.They found a soft target.
Just a question....and an update.First,do you mind if I sub? Your work is outstanding(rivals anything from CalArts). As far as the fire....the eastern flank has become an issue. There's hotspots all over Mt. Waterman...and the hand crews are super busy. The primary concern is fire making a big run towards Wrightwood. Locally, a nice crowd lined the offramp and blvd. in town as Firefighter Quinones was brought home to be laid to rest. His wife is a local teacher(and expecting a baby shortly)...
Thanks so much for the compliment! Of course you can subscribe - it's an honor for me and permission isn't necessary :-)
Interesting to hear where the fire has run to - it seems like it's threatening all my favorite places in the San Gabriels. Also sad to hear about our fallen firefighter heroes - especially when they leave new families behind like that. Hopefully they will be alright.
I was reading somewhere that those pyro-cumulus clouds can develop into a pyro-cumulonimbus cloud. Those kinds, I think, develop with volcanoes and huge fires. The smoke and ash can form thunderclouds and create lightning! Let's hope that never happens and the fire departments beat this!
I've heard that too. I haven't seen it happen with fire smoke, but it definitely does happen with volcanoes... I remember seeing some amazing pics of volcano-plume lightning from the Mt. St. Helens eruption in National Geographic some years back. Interesting stuff!
Majestic, and frightening at the same time, knowing WHAT these churning plumes represent. As we mentioned yesterday, time lapse shows us the character that we just can't see in real time. It's amazing.
I think we all pray that they gain control of this monster soon.
No doubt - it's fascinating stuff. They're starting to evacuate some areas nearer to me now, which are adjacent to the wildlands. Shouldn't be a problem in town though, unless we get some heavy winds (let's hope not!). I think they're making some progress on this thing though.
It almost looks like clouds forming over the heat of the fire. In eastern OR where im from, we would burn wheat stuble in august. Sometimes after its started you can actualy see clouds forming above the fire and smoke. Then after its put out, the clouds disapears. Either way, great vid for sure.
Yes that exactly what those are... they're known as "Pyro-Cumulus" . The smoke plume from this fire has reaches 4km and higher according to Nasa. That's definitely high enough to condense any water vapor being moved up there by the heat convection. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)
I've been looking at the different postings...thanks for your video. I guess it's becoming evident that the major LA TV stations let the public down on Sat. and Sun.(the word didn't get out till nightfall). The L.A.S.D. saved a lot of lives....and Time/Warner channel 3 was instrumental in helping people with the north county evac. We were stunned that rotary air support didn't show up until Sun night in Acton....but at least the DC-10 was working over toward Soledad Cyn. Thanks again
Wow - I didn''t know there were so many deficiencies in the handling of this event!
It almost seemed like YouTube had footage and info before any other media.
Maybe that's the way things are going - to user-driven, nearly real-time broadcast via Internet! Glad I could help bring the scale of this thing to the public..
Right now we're watching Juniper Group 1139...and listening on Command Blue 11. (the area around Cima Mesa-Juniper Hills). You're welcome....and you're right about that(neighborhood blogs). Hey,the LA channels have missed a truly heroic story from the weekend(while focusing on Camp 16). Patrol 31(Bobby) got overrun(south of Acton)along with group 1133(Mike)....but they saved themselves(and two civilians)by finding a safe zone in zero visiblity conditions. Just unreal luck......
I know they've 'dozered hard, but it's really tough to get a visual...the whole area (Little Rock Creek)is blacked out....and if we get onshores this aft., that means big trouble for the mesa.Right now the winds' offshore(N.E.) ....do you want me to get back to you?
There's a break in the smoke...and I've glassed the ridge from the 14 over to Valyermo. There's a solid line of vehicles spaced 1/4 mi. apart up there...with their lights on (just keeping an eye on things)@ 21:15 hrs. Plus, there's an addtnl. camp crew staged at Fort Tejon and 106 th St. Looks real good for Cima and Juniper Hills. You can rest easy,my friend. We'll ttyl....
That's for sure - some of that old growth ecosystem was probably densely populated with wildlife. Fortunately, nature recovers from such events surprisingly fast (2-5 years).
its beautiful, all the burnt mater is stored inside those smokey clouds, just to be released as rain, its amazing how nothing is lost, it is all a cycle!
send legions and legions of choppers loaded with dirt or water. water makes smoke billow dirt does not. either way it would stop those raging fires. what started it? i saw a video where a truck caught fire at pacheco pass or something.
it started cuz of soooo much heat from the sun. the tempture was like in the 100's . even 110. thats what caused the fires. thats the answer for every one thta doesn't know,if you think im wrong go and check the news or weather.
Thanks so much! :-) This fire is about 15-25 miles to the east of where I am. No danger here at the moment. Fortunately, the winds are light so it's not as bad as it could be. The biggest problems with this fire are smoke obscuring the tanker aircraft pilots' view, and the rugged terrain with 40+ year old growth. This has been a tough one.
I've been wondering if you were close to any fires.Made me worry about chasing the wildlife away from your camera range.I guess they'll came back.Hope you didn't lose too much nearby habitats.Wildlife is resilient,I suppose. Not the first fire & not the last, either.
The fire did get pretty close to one of my favorite haunts in the San Gabriel Mts. - I'm not sure if it was spared or not. I'll find out once the fire is out and roads are open again. I'm in Santa Clarita, which is about 10 miles west of the fire and plumes at the time. I shot these scenes from right near my house. It looks plenty scary but there isn't any danger to my area at this point.
