I'd like to try one of these, or any Harley Davidson, just to get a feel for how they handle differently in the twisties when compared to what I'm used to. See I've only been riding for about nine months and most of that's been on a 2007 ZZR250. I never quite understood what people really meant when they talked about the different handling characteristics. Now that I'm trying a CB400 which has a more upright seating position I'm finding how different tit is based on position alone.
my dad gave me his 2007 sportster 883 for my first bike, he bought this bike new in 2010. i rode from puyallup washington to spokane washington to visit him about a month ago. long story short he let me ride his dyna and DAMNNNNNNNn that fucker has alot of torque, especially when compared to that little 883 of mine. i weigh about 160 i was flying on that thing! great bike!
Can anyone tell me a good reason why I should not get this bike? I'm a female with very long legs, btw. I just took the course at Harley Davidson. Thanks.
@WinterXL I got a sportster for now. 1200XL custom. I do like it a lot. It has enough power for me, and it's not too heavy. My only problem is starting on a hill. I'm still practicing my turns.

@tgolding27 Hey man not sure how much riding experience you have, but you can try using your front brake to assist you on taking off on a hill. The trick is hold the front brake(I only use 1 to2 fingers) until you start feeling the chassis start to load then just slowly let off the brake while adding some throttle. It works really good for me, it is kinda like using the E-brake in a car when taking off on a hill. Well man I hope this helps and ride sale.
the last wide glide was the evo 1998 - then it started going downhill - that fucking ugly 2006 version was the worst - horrible - the wide glide was meant to be a custom bike with the bits most people did to a superglide already done - but now its more like a fuckin honda or something - the stuff is not in it - looks cheap - buy a superglide custom instead - better still buy an old evo dyna wideglide- beautiful bike - more reliable and handles great too - imo
mmmm ... I dont like this new version of the Wide Glide ... , in fack, i dont like the new models and new modifications in the harley models , EVOLUTION NEVER DIE ¡¡¡¡
To bad about Highland would have been nice to buy a American made bike that was made to compete at world class levels. HD to me seems to represent the worst parts of the US, style over substance, keep making the same damn inferior products and waving the flag. We are the country that put a man on the moon, made the Internet and decoded the human Genome we should be able to make a better bike. Like Cadillac, Buick and Oldsmobile the Harley crowed just keeps getting older, its a dieing company
I own a 2003 WideGlide. Harley took the soul out of the 2010 WideGlide! Where are the apes? The kick back tail? All the things that make a WideGlide a psuedo chopper have been taken away? It's like building a new Fatboy with a skinny front tire. What is Harley's point? As an owner of 2 Harley's and several road trips to Sturgis, I find Harley's decision to chop up a fine motorcycle stupid! Thanks for letting me give my two cents worth!
I like people who like these bikes and what they stand for.Just watched show about those few good men,who started that company. They were real good, hard working guys, who liked to help employees in need.
Is that a picture you can see now??After a long time of making huge profits on their overpriced products, they have a little lost a start to treat people like shit.
Kick out Eric Buell, who was with them for a long while and so.When they started, they used any innovation that was available and now??
Hey I'm with you, but harley scams people sometimes. If you happen to be the guy that is 50 years old and a first time buyer, harley loves you.... what's that bolt on
$5000 worth of shit, harley loves u. fuck that, I fix my own and they don't like guys like us anymore. Now parts and sales are made up of people that don't even ride... bunch of shit
My dad and I were buying a wide glide last month but we though it was too much for us as it would be our first real bike, I'm 18 y.o. (we've had a 250cc kawasaki before and others but never something over 1000cc) so the very last day of searching bikes we decided to go for a sportster 1200 xl custom, we bought it, we're happy with her but, now I wonder how it would have been with the big one. So far we have bought accesories. But still have the feelings for the dyna.
the new WG is so bad ass i'm in love. wife says i gotta buy her a house first but then she will be mine oh yes she will be mine. oh yeah the flames thou really gay.all blacks the only way to go!
overpriced piece of shit! sounds like shit, garbage, new harleys are made foryuppies. I own a 1993 dyna wide glide, thats when they had style. built motor, customed out, but simple, oh yeah not $15,000 either i would be cautious in purchasing a new harley considering how they treat there employees now, you might get a lemon. Ride it like you stole it
To bad the miracles Eric Buell was doing to the prehistoric bikes that outsell all other cruisers wasn't selling Buells. Those who want sport bikes buy overseas products, if you want to cruise with a dependable product go with HD.
@matrox I like all styles of motorcycles,so sometimes i have to defend HD and cruisers and other times other styles.I just visited their store and some bikes caught my eye and normally i would think about buy,but what they do with employees seriously bothers me.
i agree with you, the company is jacked up thanks to new management! they threaten us with bullshit threats and expect us to do 100% everyday yea right!
@1978mudtruck1 I am sorry for that. For sure, that's a bit difference from the men, that started that company and helped people, when they needed help. They were normal people and were acting like that.
i've been with the company going on 11yrs and they are treating us like shit (thanks to keith wandell). they are laying people off (saying sales are down) and expect them to do 100% when the employees know it's to line corporate fuckers pockets. so you're right you might get a lomon. bikes get cheaper material but the prices go up!
we are sending bike kits to india and they will be assembled there. they say it is for cheaper exporting taxes but you are right they are taking "AMERICAN" jobs away. i heard today that it is their goal is to get all fabricating processes done overseas. this will only kill harley! the corporate bastards don't care as long as they make their billions!
@SuperAnt33 dude you hit the nail on the head there - fuckin yuppie machine - some fuckers will even try and tell you that harleys are for cruising - and they dont handle well on the twisties? i have a 97 wg and its fuckin fine on the corners - avon venom tyres pm calipers and progressive springs in the forks and il fuckin stick with any bike on the corners - il never sell mine anyway - if i do il get another 1340 dyna wideglide
@ihateanimalshelters i think the 2005 was it - after that they put a big wide tyre on it and fucked up the rear fender - and raked the front too much - no man that was fuckin ugly - the rear fender had no curve it was just a big fuckin boat tail sticking out - they made a bollox of the bike after 2005 - and the new one is pure shite - doesnt even look like a harley - imo - but the old (dyna) wide glide - best lookin harley of them all - 32 deg rake fuckin gorgeous bike
@mahmahmonkey "They've got soul unmatched by any other MC maker." Well that's debatable with some of the British and Italian bikes. If there is any bike that had ALOT of soul it would of been John brittens V1000. Built and handcrafted by a man in his garage with beautiful sculpture and a gorgeous engine keynote! Such a shame he passed away shortly after he won so many.
What are they doing, trying to copy Japanese bikes? Stick some ape hangers on it, add a lot more chrome and louder pipes and it might actually look and sound like a Harley again.
bitch bitch bitch anybody that has a prob with this bike obviously doesn't ride harleys... they're made to cruise not ride fast around corners... you wana go fast around turns then go buy a GSXR.. or you could just grow the fuck up
@jpsbfmc I don't necessarily want to go fast through the corners, but I would like to ride a motorcycle that can navigate a mild turn without any hard part of it making contact with pavement. Motorcycles should always place functionality before form.
@jpsbfmc cruise?? not at all - my harley is great on the corners - ive covered alot of country twisty roads on my 97 wg - and il tell you i kept up with bmws fuckin r1s you name it - if you can handle a bike you can throw a harley into a corner fairly quick - if you cant handle a bike then you are going to be left behind - its the pilot that counts ultimately
those who find faults in everything in life will have a dull life.
HD riders tent to find beauty in even the smallest of things.
its much more fun to love something than to hate something. but idiots dont understand this and thus care so much as to go out to say and live by whatever everyone else thinks is "in" or "cool"
HD riders dont care. is there anything cooler than that? maby liquid nitrogen. who knows.
Yeap, this is what the perfect bike should look like if you ask me. Harley produce great designs, but again... they have issues, engine vibration is too high and need new screws or you have to use glue or tighten them up every once in a while.
I have Suzuki Intruder VS1400 for more than half the price and had no issues for 2 years now.
Overpriced. Heavy. Bloated. Slow. Crap stock parts. My veteran friend's "new" harley broke down like 5x on the way to Sturgis. He could have got there faster on a '77 Harley AMF heap
Very ameature flames in my opinion. If im putting flames on anything they need to have super definition to them, or be tribal. I think this bike would look nice "murdered out" as in all black. But, like i said, that's my opinion, as minuscule as it is.
I think a Harley needs more of a bad-ass factor than this. Although a lot of people (like the guys who make South Park) don't appreciate it, I think more of that Harley noise would be just what Dr. Davidson ordered.
In terms of pure engineering efficiency and prowess, I totally agree that a Hog is far behind, say, a Kawasaki Ninja. It's quite a ways behind just about everything else, too. But that's not the point! You don't buy a Harley for light weight, zappy power, supercar speed, or precision handling. Harley Davidsons aren't meant for that. They are a machine for those who still like the appeal of good ol' badass-ness. It's the difference between a Hemi Cuda and a Ferrari Enzo. I'd take the Cuda.
Ok now dont ever put a mopar in the same league as a Hog Or I will be reaching through the computer and rippin yer E fingers off.
I rode a yami cruiser for 13 years, loved it, thought I would enjoy a hog because of appreciation of one back in those days ect, so I rode a buddy who had an absolute beatiful fxlrs ? horrid, vibrated so bad you could not see the mirrors going down the highway, no real usable power besides the initial stump pulling torque, unbalanced, basically the jap bike had it
But is the engineering really that bad? Is vibration the only qualifier? I don't own an HD but I do appreciate the styling of older bikes. HD is the only one that seems to have managed to keep even a modicum of the older bikes. Triumph's are good too mind you. The japanese cruisers look off. I don't know what happened. They used to make very nice (to me) UMJ's. THe older CB and KZ's are really nice machines even today. But japanese cruisers, not so much. HD's are very expensive though.
Hardley has been hammered for years by multiple magazines for the lack of R&D put into their bikes. Considering their history alone rather than addressing engine shake, well, you got rubber mounts. Look at the springer system, google it as a matter of fact.
Most stock bikes have crap suspension, but the lack of adjustment is missing on most cruisers, not just HD. Minus for cruisers in general as far as I'm concerned.I think the engines shake because they want it to, and people will pay for the springer. Just means they are selling to the crowd doesn't mean it's an engineering issue. Do they have reliability, durability issues? Things like that.
actually most modern bikes have pretty decent suspension, hell on my old 82 virago I had adjustable air shock on the back. Unheard of on the over priced hardly. Yes they have had reliablity and durability issues. The engines shake because of the shit design single pan crank. They were worse before Eric Buell addressed and took care of the ridiculous oil consumption problem.
and the Hog had absolutely nothing, but slightly better looks, to carry it through.
Absolute garbage, and yes, I have ridden a modern hog, its not a cuda, its more like a Yugo engine with added cylinders and bling to make it look cool, for a premier sport bike, you pay less than a hog, so by price standard, the hog would be the Ferrari.
I suppose you think a Cuda is cheaper than a Ferrari. Obviously it depends on the Ferrari (Enzo is obviously more expensive, a 355 is not).
And again, I have to point out that a Harley isn't supposed to be a good bike. It's a bike that appeals to a certain market of people who couldn't imagine riding a bike made of something as feminine as plastic. It's a hard, mean, bad-ass looking bike with a bad-ass history. So, the Harley-Davidson market is 100% separate from the rest of the market.
Harley davidson actually has a huge racing background, they were very dominant in the flat track especially, and still are. Cruisers are not, and never have been synonymous only with harley, through good marketing to a largly ignorant consumer base that perception has remained, Indian, Triumph and BSA were huge competitors against harley at one time, since, triumph has continued, and jap bikes have also took a huge chunk of that market.
I still maintain that the Harley-buying public get the bike for it's presentation rather than its performance. I know that Harley-Davidson were very active in racing back in the day. If I had a chance to buy Mert Lawwil's bike I'd do it in an instant.
The other bike makers have left Harley behind in performance, but Harley alone have kept the soul and the legacy of the big, crude, bad-ass pig-iron. It's the appeal of a a steam train over a diesel one, and the Muscle Car over the Lamborghini.
I never said they purchased it for performance, you are correct, however its not so much presentation as it is merely just the name, example a buddy sold a boulevard 800 for a fatboy, nearly identical bike, but he had to have the actual Harley name, personaly I do not get it, but if that is what you are getting at, I fully concur.
The name, image, and sound are the big things I think people go for. For me, the biggest thing is the sound. That goes back to my very original comment, where I said the bike being reviewed is too quiet, and it takes away a lot of the appeal. It's a lot like a V-8 in that it just delivers a raw, throaty growl that seems to drip with muscle, even if there's not much power behind it. The Harley ranks at #4 on my list of top engine sounds, behind the V-8, jet engine, and two-stroke single.
I'd like to try one of these, or any Harley Davidson, just to get a feel for how they handle differently in the twisties when compared to what I'm used to. See I've only been riding for about nine months and most of that's been on a 2007 ZZR250.

I liked the look of it until i saw it scraping round the corners!
In the uk some roads have speed humps ala(sleeping policeman)that would really give the underneath a grinding without a bashplate.
If the rear end was rigid it might have a better chance..
That being said though its funky MC

those who find faults in everything in life will have a dull life.

But at the end...harley is a harley after all

Overpriced. Heavy. Bloated. Slow. Crap stock parts. My veteran friend's "new" harley broke down like 5x on the way to Sturgis. He could have got there faster on a '77 Harley AMF heap

Victory's Are so much better and that's a fact. 2010 are you kidding? Looks like its straight out of the 80's. I saw that bike on chips.

cruisers are a crappy concept. you can't even turn without scraping parts! what's the point?
and how does a small to medium single disc stop a 750 lb machine? should have a 300mm dual disc config.

Nothing like a piece of shit engine design to attract people who do not know any better.
mako7828 2 years ago
In terms of pure engineering efficiency and prowess, I totally agree that a Hog is far behind, say, a Kawasaki Ninja. It's quite a ways behind just about everything else, too. But that's not the point! You don't buy a Harley for light weight, zappy power, supercar speed, or precision handling. Harley Davidsons aren't meant for that. They are a machine for those who still like the appeal of good ol' badass-ness. It's the difference between a Hemi Cuda and a Ferrari Enzo. I'd take the Cuda.
JETZcorp 2 years ago
Ok now dont ever put a mopar in the same league as a Hog Or I will be reaching through the computer and rippin yer E fingers off.
I rode a yami cruiser for 13 years, loved it, thought I would enjoy a hog because of appreciation of one back in those days ect, so I rode a buddy who had an absolute beatiful fxlrs ? horrid, vibrated so bad you could not see the mirrors going down the highway, no real usable power besides the initial stump pulling torque, unbalanced, basically the jap bike had it
mako7828 2 years ago
But is the engineering really that bad? Is vibration the only qualifier? I don't own an HD but I do appreciate the styling of older bikes. HD is the only one that seems to have managed to keep even a modicum of the older bikes. Triumph's are good too mind you. The japanese cruisers look off. I don't know what happened. They used to make very nice (to me) UMJ's. THe older CB and KZ's are really nice machines even today. But japanese cruisers, not so much. HD's are very expensive though.

Cheapest shocks money can buy.
Hardley has been hammered for years by multiple magazines for the lack of R&D put into their bikes. Considering their history alone rather than addressing engine shake, well, you got rubber mounts. Look at the springer system, google it as a matter of fact.
Hardly is garbage.
mako7828 2 years ago
Most stock bikes have crap suspension, but the lack of adjustment is missing on most cruisers, not just HD. Minus for cruisers in general as far as I'm concerned.I think the engines shake because they want it to, and people will pay for the springer. Just means they are selling to the crowd doesn't mean it's an engineering issue. Do they have reliability, durability issues? Things like that.
fireworkstube 2 years ago
actually most modern bikes have pretty decent suspension, hell on my old 82 virago I had adjustable air shock on the back. Unheard of on the over priced hardly. Yes they have had reliablity and durability issues. The engines shake because of the shit design single pan crank. They were worse before Eric Buell addressed and took care of the ridiculous oil consumption problem.
mako7828 2 years ago
and the Hog had absolutely nothing, but slightly better looks, to carry it through.
Absolute garbage, and yes, I have ridden a modern hog, its not a cuda, its more like a Yugo engine with added cylinders and bling to make it look cool, for a premier sport bike, you pay less than a hog, so by price standard, the hog would be the Ferrari.
mako7828 2 years ago
I suppose you think a Cuda is cheaper than a Ferrari. Obviously it depends on the Ferrari (Enzo is obviously more expensive, a 355 is not).
And again, I have to point out that a Harley isn't supposed to be a good bike. It's a bike that appeals to a certain market of people who couldn't imagine riding a bike made of something as feminine as plastic. It's a hard, mean, bad-ass looking bike with a bad-ass history. So, the Harley-Davidson market is 100% separate from the rest of the market.
JETZcorp 2 years ago
Harley davidson actually has a huge racing background, they were very dominant in the flat track especially, and still are. Cruisers are not, and never have been synonymous only with harley, through good marketing to a largly ignorant consumer base that perception has remained, Indian, Triumph and BSA were huge competitors against harley at one time, since, triumph has continued, and jap bikes have also took a huge chunk of that market.
Internet man, click and educate yourself will ya?
mako7828 2 years ago
I still maintain that the Harley-buying public get the bike for it's presentation rather than its performance. I know that Harley-Davidson were very active in racing back in the day. If I had a chance to buy Mert Lawwil's bike I'd do it in an instant.
The other bike makers have left Harley behind in performance, but Harley alone have kept the soul and the legacy of the big, crude, bad-ass pig-iron. It's the appeal of a a steam train over a diesel one, and the Muscle Car over the Lamborghini.
JETZcorp 2 years ago
I never said they purchased it for performance, you are correct, however its not so much presentation as it is merely just the name, example a buddy sold a boulevard 800 for a fatboy, nearly identical bike, but he had to have the actual Harley name, personaly I do not get it, but if that is what you are getting at, I fully concur.
mako7828 2 years ago
The name, image, and sound are the big things I think people go for. For me, the biggest thing is the sound. That goes back to my very original comment, where I said the bike being reviewed is too quiet, and it takes away a lot of the appeal. It's a lot like a V-8 in that it just delivers a raw, throaty growl that seems to drip with muscle, even if there's not much power behind it. The Harley ranks at #4 on my list of top engine sounds, behind the V-8, jet engine, and two-stroke single.
