Though I love the inventiveness of the music they made later on, for sheer sonic gorgeousness it's hard to beat the early records with Tony Hooper. The purity of Hooper's voice blends perfectly with Cousins' eccentric, reedy sound.
I absolutely love the Strawbs, this is fabulous, oh my god, so good, amazing.(I'm of again!...) they are excellent. Love them. Thank you for posting, brilliant.
This must just predate the Antiques and Curios live album, since Ron Chesterman is on bass and Hudson and Ford haven't joined yet, so it must be very, very soon after Wakeman joined.
Lovely gentle English folk from a band who went on to great things in the early 70s

ouch! this is actually pretty awful when compared with the lp version. the chaps are off-key for siginificant portions, especially at the beginning. sorry...
I recorded this as a lad when it was broadcast and although I've listened to it many hundreds of times over the years, I never knew who it was. As a student I had the later Strawbs LPs but had no idea that this was the same group. What a joy to find out the truth!
I was at a Strawbs live concert in Watford, UK, 1970, at the end of the show one of the band members threw a tambourine in to the audience and I caught it, and I still have it.
Great vid, would be great to see a live vid of Witchwood. twiggy . c
Brilliant! And.. Dave Cousins and Rick Wakeman played together on 20/4/7, along with Dave Lambert and Chas Cronk, to record live show for Planet Rock (easily found, listen live facility). Broadcast scheduled Sat 28/4/7 10am - 1pm (UK) or following week. First time these amazing musicians have played together since recording "Catherine Howard". Great listening - I know - I was lucky enough to be there for recording. DON'T MISS IT!
This is SO awesome!! I first heard the Strawbs in the mid nineties and loved them ever since especially their acoustic stuff! What glorious vocals and harmonies, and what can one say about Rick Wakeman? How come today's music is so uninspiring? Would love to see a video of the Strawbs "Glimpse of Heaven"!!!
This must have been framed in 1968. I first saw them in west London around 1970 at Isleworth Polytechnic and the Bull in East Sheen, not forgetting the legendary White Bear in Hounslow.
i have grave new world on lp good stuff

Name a band that is good live compared with their album.
Sigurth 2 years ago
sigurth, I`ll be happy to do so:
1) compare any track on "the who live at leeds" with the studio versions
2) compare paul mccartney`s "maybe I`m amazed" on "wings over america" with the studio version
3) compare any track on j geils band`s "full house - live" with the studio versions
4) compare neil young`s live versions on "live rust" with the studio stuff
etc.
...I could go on and on: there are literally dozens of phantastic live albums with superior versions of songs. hope this helps ;-)

Yes Harry, and Dave Cousins should be made a "Freeman" of the London Borough of Hounslow where he lived for 9 years!

Cousins/Hooper recordings should be national treasures of Britain--and this is a particularly fine example. Beautiful work by Wakeman.
