A question like this can never be answered with yes or no ;)
It was a very small and agile machine, which made it a hell of a ride for the crew, but still it was hard to detect and hit, which was good, but its armor and gun where by far not the best, which are great disadvantages on a tank battlefield.
Personally I would choose the Jagdpanther as the best anti-tank weapon of WW2, but that's just my opinion;)
It's a 7,5-cm-Pak 39 L/48. With the propper ammunition engaging a T-34 even at 1000m was possible. Although one should mention that anti tank guns were, if not just as support for the infantry, used to flank enemy armor, and killing a tank from the side is even easier ;)
in Zwölfaxing, a small village in Austria where a tank battalion and the austrian armor school are located. Every year they have visitors day where historical and modern vehicles are on display.
it's out of czech production but after the full restauration it was meant to look like a ww2 model. check out my other videos to see it after completion
Since the Germans in WWII never got airburst detonators in their artillery shells (US ones were released in response to the German Ardennes Offensive) open top wasn't much of a disadvantage. The M-18 76mm gun had better armor penetration than the Russian T-34/84 (though not as good a HE round).
The point is : no need of a big gun to change a M18 in a steel fireplace ... with hetzers ,jagdtigers or jagdpanthers it's another dimension ;o)
In fact ,i don't like the idea of open roofs on tanks :in forests or in towns ,german opponents only have to hit a tree or a big wall to seriously hurt US guys -i admit i don't find a good picture of the top of a m18 ;o) )
With the proper strategy and knowledge of the battleground (and experienced team), u can always defeat a stronger opponent ... so saying "m18 was better than hetzer" or the opposite ,is quite difficult i think ... (M 18 vs Jagdtiger or Jagdpanther in a frontal assault ... lol)
@BGWDstudios First, neither m-18 nor Hetzer were tanks. M-18 was a Tank Destroyer or more formally a Motor Gun Carriage, Hetzer was a Panzerjager, performing a similar function for the Germans. Second the Hetzer was produced from March 1944 to 1945, M-18 was produced beginning in July of 1943 and served with US beginning at Anzio.
@DonMeaker I was using the word "tank" as a general term, so don't go into a frenzy when somebody calls a tracked vehicle with a gun a tank. Both tanks were produced at the same time, and the m-18 was upgraded and produced into the 50's, validating my arguement. And in the end, both were good tanks, but it's like comparing a Tiger to a sherman. And by that I mean that the hetzer was better. HETZER GONNA HETZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@BGWDstudios Hetzer was also produced after the war, and served as the G-13 with the Swiss. Internal layout was different. Both were indeed good, but your argument that Hetzer came before M-18 is simply false. Production of M-18 stopped in October 1944, IIRC.
@BGWDstudios I agree that Tiger was better at stopping German offensives by sucking excess fuel. It was first fielded far from Germany and contributed to the WWII record of German losses in both east and west which ended with Germany fielding the 5th largest army in Germany.
@bad74maverick1 The US, Germany, and Soviets produced mobile artillery units. One of my favorite is the Stu-3 which was produced on the PzIII chassis, and had a variety of guns. The initial purpose was to move artillery to where it could take out machine gun nests, but later was adapted to a tank destroyer role. Soviets fielded Su-85/100/122 SP guns. US fielded towed and SP tank destroyers, and towed and SP artillery in different branches.
@DonMeaker Wow nice talking to you I have been an "Amateur historian" for years. It's a passion of mine sound like yours too. Several guns I like are the M114 155mm towed howitzer and the M1918 3" anti-tank weapon, which later became the GM M10 tank destroyer.
@bad74maverick1 I was born at Ft. Sill, my father was a field artillery officer. I served in 3rd Armored Division, 48th (Mech) Infantry, but was assigned to 4.2 inch and 81mm mortars, and had TOW missiles in my company and battalion combat support company. I looked to WWII to develop tactics against the Tanks and Motorized Rifles that we expected (and lots of Soviet Artillery!!!). "for it is quite the usual thing to face the way you run, if you shoot him in the flank, he will not see your gun."
this is my current primary armored vehicle on world of tanks. The tank destroyer better would be the Jadgpanther.

Cool. Thank you.
BTW, what size gun is that? Could it take out at T34 only at close range?
Thanks again.

Nice.
I like it a lot. I see what looks to be 3 shits for the transmission in the video.
Too bad for the Krauts they didn't have them deployed in Babarossa.... might have got to Moscow in 41'.

I think that the most produced were the Stugs ,and they proved to be very good engines .
Jagdpanthers were probably the bests but too few on battlegrounds .
Hetzers were in the middle but their cost ,reliability and effectiveness were indisputable .

That´s the old Italeri Kit with added working engine. :-D

M 18 was too lightly armoured ,gun was unabled to really hurt tigers&panthers at middle range ,and no roof on the turret ...

m18 hellcat could take on panther , there is some story from western front where m18s destroyed few panthers , check "tank overhaul" serie with m18

i'd agree with that , i was refering to your comment "M 18 was too lightly armoured ,gun was unabled to really hurt tigers&panthers at middle range "
so it was proved in real battle that m18 could destroy panther,i've seen that doc few years ago and i've found and watched it again before christmas
