it's a bit inane, but i always loved it. just a bit of mindless self-copying in "DM style (lame-o) truisms". So catchy. can't be art all the time lads, make that money b-Flexible when the boat comes in!
They hate it. Martin Gore at least never liked it very much and wanted "Fly on the Windscreen" to be the other single to be on the Singles 81-85 compilation album. When that didn't happen he remade it a little and included it in the "Black Celebration" album.
Personally I think there's nothing wrong with this song. It may not be their best, but it's still a good, uptempo pop song.
I read that it's their least favorite Depeche Mode song. I really disagree, lol. It's the same with Radiohead not liking "High and Dry." I'm always surprised when I hear what songs a band doesn't like by themselves.
I seem to recall "What's your name" is their least favorite Depeche Mode song, but Vince Clarke wrote that one, and Martin Gore doesn't really count that album (although it is good pop for '81) even if he wrote two songs for it.
Sometimes bands are forced to comply with the demands of their record label and release songs which have "mass appeal". It may be songs they aren't too fond of themselves but their producer and others can convince them it will make "new fans".
