My parents bought me this album the xmas before my grandad died. In the 6 months afterwards I moved into his house until it was sold, to sort all the belongings and furniture, and i listened to this album a lot. This song, and Gypsy biker, will always make me think of him.
This is such an amazing song .We have all being unfortunate to have lost someone who broke the mould, but on the other hand it was a great pleasure and privilege to have loved them
I still remember the first time I heard this song at the radio, I loved it instantanetly.I did'nt know this Terry but it brokes my heart evertime I hear it.What a beautiful tribute to his friend, Bruce is a amazing songwriter.
I've just had 'when they built you brother' tattoo'd underneath my brothers name on the top of my back ....no one can understand the bond between brothers, we should be very greatful for having it.
After posting this video when Bruce first released this song, I have been touched by the comments. Both for the Magovern Family, but all others who have used this posting to mourn. Bruce has given us all a gift by writing this song, and allowing it to be posted on Yuotube.
To all of us who have lost loved ones, each one special in thier own right, each one breaking the mold........
Terry was my best friend and love. I am lost without him . Bruce said all that words can say about such a great man. when he sang this at the funeral i did not hear the words for tears. losing Terry was as bad as when my father died. I still go to where his ashes were scattered to talk to his spirit, as he will always be here with us all as he was in life until all the people he loved are with him again, he will not rest. what I would give for just 1 more hug and laugh and lunch with him.
My daddy was always a huge Bruce Springsteen fan. He passed away on November 10, 2009 due to cancer. Now, I listen to bruce more than ever. It always makes me think of my daddy. He was the strongest man I ever knew and is now my angel. I love you, Daddy. RIP. -When they built you, father, they broke the mold-
Today is the one year anniversary of my dad passing. This was the last song song that he listened too before leaving this world and I couldn't think of a better one to describe the best man I ever knew. RIP Dad. We miss you.
I lost my dad to cancer last week and I would have liked to play this song at his funeral. Rest In Peace Dad. I miss you more then you could imagine. They definitely broke the mold when God built you.
@ortleyman You are not alone brother, many of us here on this planet share your pain. Here's to your old man... may your memories comfort you and never leave you!!!!
It should be pointed out that the Titanic was not actually 'built to be one of a kind' but rather was middle one of 3 sister ships. It also was practically identical to the RMS Olympic. I'm sure Bruce doesn't give a hoot about that fact but it gives me a wry smile every time I hear the song. I'm off to iron a crease into my socks.
my dad was called terry and he also died of cancer, bruce has always been my parents favourite perfomer's. theres a ironic magic to this song which my family can relate too. makes my dads passing easier to take.
My Uncle died in September of colon cancer. This song perfectly captures his life and his death. Ironically Bruce Springsteen is my father's faviorate song, so its really powerful that the songs captures his brother so perfectly. thank you bruce.
my mom used this in my grandmothers eulogy she said "as bruce springsteen said 'when they built you brother they broke the mold' so i say when they built you mother they broke the mold" this song puts me in tears
'They say you can't take it with you, but I think that they're wrong. 'Cause all I know is I woke up this morning, and something big was gone.' this line always makes me remember some good times, because i have had this feeling when family members have passed. there presence is gone and you can feel it.
He putt so much feeling in to the song, and I don't mean just in the lyrics but in everything, he probably had tears in hes eyes or even cried when he was recording it.
I would like to dedicate this song to my friend Ron Vernon right now... Ron passed on the 23rd of Oct... He was a fellow police officer and my partner in 1998-99... He retired 2 years ago, and is now gone... God Speed Ron!!!
My brother Jeff was a huge Bruce Springsteen fan who passed away on 11/02/2004. His last e-mail and his last communication to me was : "Yesterday in Minnesota Bruce Springsteen did a free concert to tens of thousands of people for John Kerry. One of the songs he did was "Promised Land" which is one of my favorite songs. Yeah Bruce ! Love , Jeff"
I lost my own Tary last may and i am just amazed at this song - as it is i cry my eyes out listening to Backstreets - love you bruce and thanks for sharing this scotty
the song touched me....My buddy who passed was a big Bruce fan with me. We went to so many Bruce concerts together. I did a video to this song remembering him. He was also the kind of guy who, "broke the mold." thanks

its basically doing something never done before--something unique. i guess it can also be seen as, if you break the mold, you out-do yourself.

Springsteen is referring to mould casting.
Casting using a mould is a manufacturing process as used in ceramics and metals to create any shape such as unique vase.
"Broke the mould"= one of a kind.
