Late 70's/early 80's Was perhaps the best period in Oz music scene with Oils, Angels, ACDC, INXS & Icehouse to name a few. Most of these bands are still around or reforming and the music defined a generation or two! So glad I grew up when it was all happening and saw the best gigs. Icehouse was perhaps underrated in OZ however perhaps bigger o/seas than many others of this time. The 30th anniversary release of Flowers Icehouse is brilliant.
Thirty years on and still sounds as good as ever. Bring the band over to N.Z. Iva so that we can experience your live performance just one more time. Flowers (Icehouse) you still rock.
Justagirl, you're a legend!!! You've definitely provided some quality viewing here. Icehouse's performance is a timely reminder of where modern bands are being influenced.
ok kids, great to see the patriotic passion over oz bands,i see iva as our david bowie.icehouse was the first band to have a digitally recorded album in the world with measure for measure ands dont tell me new acts like the killers arent influenced by these same sounds, ive seen the angels, great live but am partioning an icehouse oz tour reformed..now!!
Whoa there skywalker. I loved the Flowers/Icehouse too, but that's a big call saying they were the best aussie band ever! Your entitled to say they were your favourite and you think the following bands were overated. But if you go on success here, factoring album sales and pulling the punters through the pub and club doors in OZ. Well, it's simply no contest. The Angels, Cold Chisel and Midnight Oil absolutely brained them in the popularity stakes, especially as a live act in our country.
which album again is still the highest selling album by an Australian artist in this country? I believe it's called Man Of Colours. I stand by what I say because of the originality and quality of their songs, and a great vocalist/songwriter/musician. I doubt other Aussie acts can say the same
Don't forget our other great songwriter/singers who are world class. Mark Seymour from Hunters & Collectors, Paul Kelly, Neil ( we'll claim him ) Finn and Mick Thomas from Weddings, Parties, Anything.
Paul Mcartney said Neil Finn is the worlds best songwriter and Bono said the same about Mick Thomas. High praises indeed!!!
can't argue with that. Neil Finn is one of my favourite singer/songwriters and yeah, we can claim him. Have followed Split Enz and Crowded House througout most of their careers. cheers for reminding me, almost forgot about poor Neil but always thought of him as a kiwi.
Much as the Kiwis, bless em keep reminding everyone that the Finns are Kiwis, we shouldn't forget that they are at least Honorary Aussies having been based here for many years during the Split Enz and Crowded House days. Many of their biggest hits were recorded in Australian studios and the Enz recorded for an Aussie Record Company.
Wouldn't go that far - Midnight Oil and The Angels were not so pop oriented. I'll accept they weren't your cuppa but I love em all pretty much the same... wish I was born 10 yrs earlier and got to some of the gigs back in the day! Damn
@KaceKlosed that's true, I just believe that Icehouse were too overshadowed and underrated at the time. Iva to me is the most passionate Aust musician I've ever seen, without getting political. I did like Diesel and Dust and a few of their other songs, don't get me wrong there. I wish I had seen more gigs back then too
@KaceKlosed You Don't know what u missed!! when Flowers AKA Icehouse were not playing we would demean ourselves by going to see the likes of "Midnight Oil" or "In Xs" and if we were really desperate :Cold Chisel" and "The Angels" All GREAT Sydney Pub bands,,, Along with a score of others . Ahh those were the great days of the Sydney band scene
@ASkywalker1 Spot on. I first discovered this great band supporting David Bowie at Milton Keynes Bowl in 1983. The typically pompous music press dismissed them as Roxy Music rip-offs. Whilst they clearly took influence from that group, Iva davies is an extremely talented songwriter. This is one of the catchiest pop songs of all time, and the first 4 Icehouse albums are classics. "Regular Boys" on "Measure For Measure" is another completely perfect piece of songwriting. I hope he comes to the UK.
@CONSIDERABLYMORE1 You sure got it right! I have loved Icehouse since they first came on the scene back in the glorious 80's. Just like you said, Iva Davies is a phenomenal talent that has been really overlooked. Some of my favorite songs are ones written by Iva. I just recently got the remastered copies of Measure for Measure and Man of Colours sent to me from Australia. They are awesome and signed by Iva. I love all of his songs but my favorite will always be Crazy.
It was great BUT BUT I so wish the mixer would have cranked the volume. All the bands seemed to get different treatment and these guys deserved more volume they are still very current considering the years gone by....evergreens...well done lads !!! How about a tour ?
Wow how good was that, its apity the greatest concert in australia history was not on free to air TV, what a insult to the masses this has been,i might b wrong 22 mill aussies have cable??i dont think so so pples dont waste ur time wineing about BEDS Are BURNING this no coverage of this grand event should b the issue.
lets all join the push to make a concert like this every year...! MCG & SCG... ! we need more live music at these massive venues...! instead of these pissy 15,000 seat arenas...!! what yah reckon!
I 110% Agree with you eistdios , yeah but some of these great bands from the 80's
I can remember going to some great gigs on Bondi Beach with 800,000 people rocking out to The Oils and Party Boys with Joe Walsh, and those great concerts in the Domain ( Sydney)
Not sure which order they were in but I checked the Icehouse official website and listed the tracks played as: We Can Get Together, Crazy, Electric Blue, Can't Help Myself, and Great Southern Land.
They nailed it AGAIN :)
