And one more thing ... what chord progression can i use the dorian mode over.....a basic 145 progression? Let's say i am playing 145 in C maj ....Which dorian mode do i use?
Hey i have a question. Might sound stupid but this is in the Key of E major right? So what is this dorian called....is this E dorian or F# Dorian because thats the 2nd degree in the key of E major ?? Thanx
hi. dorian is the second mode of the major scale right? does it make a difference if you play an a dorian over an e minor 145 chord progression or a b phrygian scale over a g major chord progression? since g major and e minor and b dorian all have the same notes but different roots? modes are just broken down patterns of a major scale played with different roots right? would really appreciate it man. your videos are great.
Exactly right! Early on you think about those 7 patterns but as time goes on you will play though them and slide from one to the other without thinking about it. And yes you can do this over a 145 or any other progression unless there is a key change and then everything will need to be shifted accordingly.
Must say these vids are great. I'm just trying to get my head round knowing what chord progressions warrant certain modes. The diagrams are great though because i'm picking out the major & pentantonic patterns. But like i said its just knowing what modes to play over the chord progressions/keys.
Sorry for the late reply. Use these vids for tying the patterns together to make up the fretboard in a given key. Modal playing is a whole different animal. These examples were all in E major/ C# minor. If they were all shifted up 1 fret (half step) you would be in F major? D minor, 2 more frets (whole step) G major / E minor, 2 more frets (another whole step) A major ? F# minor, etc etc.
Great lessons! These particular lessons have allowed me to see many new options on how to view the fret board in relation to modes and all that is within. It is funny how you can glean from so many different methods of teaching (some work and some don't) and then one-day it becomes simple and clear. You brought it all home. Thanks
I dont get it. Why should I learn new fingerings for modes?
For example: If I already learned fingerings for the C-major-scale and I want to play D-Dorian, why not use the fingerings for the C-Major-scale and play D as the root. What are the advantages of learning new fingerings for modes?
Use the patterns to learn the fretboard. Dont get to excited about modal playing. Its way cooler to play something from the soul and go back and figure out where it came from than start off by saying, (now Im going to play in Phrygian) To keep things organized I just refer to these patterns based on the degree of the scale that they start on.
hey man!! first of all you play really cool!!! ur ideas are much melodic!!! cool. but i dont understand ehy u say dorian pentatonic and dorian pent of blues
This fingering is based on the degree of the scale that it starts on. It is still in the key of E major/ C# minor. The pentatonic and blues patterns are simply the ones that come out of this position.

When you are making it up as you go, sometimes you are on, sometimes you are not. No edits here, the camera was rolling.
