  • Ishiro Honda is probably one of best directors of japese cinema because of this movie. He's right up there with legends like Hayao Miyazaki and Akira Kurosawa.

  • Out of all the Godzilla movies I have ever seen, this one is my absolute favorite. It seems they put a lot more effort in this one than it's sequels, and it shows.

  • @ejl1000 I guess it's because the fact that asian horror movies are more scarier than an average american horror film and when they saw the movie, I guess they thought of making it less terrifiying for the people who are going to see the film before it got released in the theaters.

  • the fact that gojira was named after a big tough guy at the studio has not been proved

  • @collectiveofborg It was discussed on the Behind the Scenes Feature on the Original Uncut Film DVD. That's what they said was the suggested name origin. Noyone knows for SURE.

  • 1:58 - Why exactly do Americans hate foreign films so much? It bothers me so much.

  • This is probably one of the most frightening films in all of foreighn cinema.

Frightening not in suspense and shock but in what is represents; Nuclear warfare.

  • The original version of Gojira is the only one in the series I would call a legitimately good film, and not just campy fun. I say this as a huge fan of Godzilla.

  • WAIT A SECOND... THERES 29 GODZILLA FILMS??? i have alot of catching up to do...

  • 4 stars how about 5 star and 1 million

  • the other movies don't look like my kind of thing, but I'm torrenting this as we speak

also I wouldn't assume the journalist guy was put in to the American version just because they felt american audiences were dumb, I think it might be because the production company thought people wouldn't see it without a familiar american star in it; so they just jammed him in as a narrator character.

  • YOU ROCK DUDE

  • I GOT THE GIENT CLAW PUPPET

  • @blueangeleyes16 really ?

  • Is there any link to the film online? I search it online and all I get is the shitty 1998 version -.-

  • @JesusX666 Don't watch is illegally. It's well worthy of being payed for. Buy the New Toho Collection Gojira DVD. It has both the Japanese and English versions. I have almost every Godzilla film ever made in almost every format in Japanese. But anyways, just buy it.

  • I love this movie. It's dark, the effects are great and Godzilla is a badass just ruining everyone's shit. Then characters are true, humane, and really troubled.

  • xxxxxxxx love you james for putting these up nice one xx

  • 1:15 derp

  • 1:09 LIES!

  • love gojira

  • I finally got the Godzilla collection box set for Christmas. Merry Christmas from Godzilla

  • i keep re watching james godzilla thon its so fun to watch him explain the series its so much fun:D

  • Does anybody if they dubbed the original version on dvd? I'd like to watch, and know what's going on at the same time.

  • @Dproguyzerz there's a dvd with both the american version and the japanese version on the one dvd but it depends where you live i guess

  • 1:16. I dont know why, i just find the look on his face funny.

  • Gojira: An awesome Monster, and an Awesome band

  • Godzilla = epic and This godzillathon = Started me to like godzilla more than before

  • GODZILLATHON IS EPIC!!!!! GODZILLA RULES!

  • @Scorchstar123 everyone here knows that.....but your right GODZILLA RULES!!!!!!

  • the Japanese version is much sadder, this was a really good movie

  • This Film also won a Japeneese academy award for best special effects.

  • Joe Bob!

  • if they havent already i think they should make godzilla vs king kong

  • Everytime I watch this film I shit myself!

  • Inspiriations for Godzilla: King Kong 1933, Beast From 20,000 Fathams, and the accident involving the fishing boat Lucky Dragon No. 5

  • ImmaZilla?

  • its Tomoyuki Tanaka! not Tanaki!

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for answering the question, "How the hell did they create Godzilla's voice?" I've wondered for years! Great series, cheers!

  • @mrbykerk they rubbed a leather or resin glove on a contrabass for the Roar and the voice

  • @NWOWCW4Life1 They also banged a bass drum, or kettle drum with a big knotted rope to make his footsteps.

  • @godzilla964 mhm

  • HAPPY 57th BIRTHDAY GODZILLA ;D

  • @PichuSkywalker No fair you beat me to that one. Oh well, HAPPY 57th BIRTHDAY GODZILLA!!!

  • @135twilight 58 actually

  • I remember a Godzilla marathon around 1999/2000. I watched the whole thing that Saturday and enjoyed every minute. Shame America doesn't have something like this...

Clover was an interesting first step into American Kaiju (if you don't count King Kong) but it feels like the attempt was made in the wrong era. Most young people don't give a damn about this genre unless the monsters were actually disemboweling the citizens...

  • @MinkNintendoNerd Yes, 'cause it's a horror film. 'Cause the monster only attacks at night, which has the feeling of dread. In the climax, the tension from the music never breaks off the moment Serizawa sacrifices himself. Although the King of the Monsters version seems to ruin the tension of the climax

  • The movie is on TV right now on TCM, I'm lucky to even see this on TV. its right in the start of the movie before Godzilla appears and destroys the city.

  • @Mr5paceman Then I'm really lucky to have a copy of the movie on DVD?

  • @MetalKnuckles509 Well, it depends. Sometimes Movies like this are more commonly seen in some countries than others.

  • @MinkNintendoNerd I've not seen it but from what i've heard no. The original was a drama that used a monster as a metaphor for a nuclear bomb. So it's kind of like a war movie. But it was os sucessful that they followed up on it with a sequel Godzilla Rides Again which was more of a b movie made to cash in on the success of cheesy monster flicks. There was a monster battle in the film which paved the way for a bunch of sequels with monster battles. It becames cheesy. So No it's not

  • As a german kid I grew up in fear of nuclear war during the cold war and the no-future-movement. Maybe that's why that atomic monster destroying civilisation still fascinates me.

  • godzilla speics is the godzillsaurs no bullshit toho actlly made a documenty about

  • The Criterion Collection is releasing an HD Blu Ray Edition next year. Nice!

  • I HAVE A VIDEO TAPE COPY OF THIS MOVIE!

  • I saw your horrow fiml2009 #28 is relly scary

  • Is it me, or does the shot of Steve Martin at 2:17 look like Charlie Sheen?

  • Actually, they called it Gojira (Gorilla & Whale) as a reference to the american success King Kong. (Whale was added because of Gojira living mostly under the sea).

  • @WeNeedSomeGolfShoes Indeed. It made Godzilla look at lot scarier and darker.

In the new movies, he´s just going around, butchering everything while blowing up everything, but in this one, he seems alot more dark and mysterious.

  • Pewee kicked godzillas ass

  • Godzilla was awesome!!! Oh as for the Godzilla 1998 version.... IT SUCKS!!!

Except for the horrible joke since, "That's alot fish!" ....THAT!!!

  • FOUR! WHY NOT FIVE?!

  • all Godzilla Roars Ever in one = SuperomegaCoolterror

  • The rumor about a Toho employee being nicknamed Gojira and inspiring the name is generally regarded as false nowadays. No one from Toho ever stepped forward claiming he was the guy, and in interviews with other members of Toho, no one seemed to have any recollection of there being a guy called Gojira.

  • @Xagzan you saved me a comment, i was gonna say all that, but no need to. as for how the name came up, they decided to use it during the planning stage when they were describing godzilla's size, power, and aquatic origin. also, english speaking countries call him godzilla probably cause part of his japanese name, gojira, was misinterpreted. still, godzilla sounds cool and no need to correct it if you ask me

  • I wish he'd said more about the movie's political agenda and the reasons for the American cut. It's a lot more than dumbing-down - they not only added 'Steve Martin' but also removed references to the H-bomb and the US nuclear test that opens the film!

  • the music is just pure unexplainable awesomeness.

  • @Soundwave401 couldn'ta said it better myself

how can anybody review the 1954 Godzilla and not remark on the score?

one of the greatest soundtracks of all time. Haunting and inspiring by turns, but like you said, you can't explain it, you have to hear it

  • @PorkFrog amen brother. music is wat makes this world

  • Now it seems 65 people have no defense.

  • @chucknorrisismypal That was actually a good "Begging for thumbs up".

    I like it.

  • I Love Godzilla I have 19 out of 28 movies and im still collecting

  • @x3L1T3xASSAS1Nx115 I started mine earlier this year I only have 3, but I'm only buying the Showa era movies now, then I'll move on to Heisei and Millennium

  • @x3L1T3xASSAS1Nx115 I have 23 out 28 and im still collecting as well

  • check out my godzilla video in my channnel

  • just awesome!!!

  • awesome!

  • This is much better than many american monsters;

This movie is actually quite realistic, of course, im not saying that the monster actually is realistic, but the reaction of the government, the army and the people are really dramatic.

  • @FilmForceStudio

I could see them doing a remake in the style of Spielberg's remake of War of the Worlds or Cloverfield focusing on a group of refugees attempting to escape from the city Godzilla is rampaging through. But you'd have to change Godzilla's orgins since the Atomic Bomb has been replaced by genetic engeneering and Climate Change as the major scientific fears of the modern era

  • @snakes3425 That is true...A Spielberg version of Godzilla would be really awesome, but yeah, nuclear bombs are kinda left behind in the 50's...Maybe a Godzilla egg was left in a state of suspended animation inside a glacier on the south pole which melted and released Godzilla?

  • @FilmForceStudio Atomic energy is Godzilla's legacy, as it is also ours. It has never left. Another good choice would be John Carpenter, since he's a fan of the original movie. So is Tim Burton.

  • @MonkeySharkPro He looks both!!!

  • the godzilla 1954 is the best he kind of looks like the final war godzilla

  • i saw this a few years ago and i had only seen new godzillas so i thought he looked handicapped just replay the vid its funny

  • Guy Inside Suit:AHHHHHHH! ITS SO HOT!

Director:What? I Cant Hear You Inside The Suit!

    Guy Inside Suit:*Faints*

    Director:CALL THE PARAMETICS!

  • @thetan63 how do you know?

  • That's not how he got his name! Nobody knows how he actually got his name, but that isn't it.

  • well thats Godzilla #1. he died at the end of his movie so the next will be number 2

  • I FUCKING HATE ALL THE PEOPLE WHO TEASE GODZILLA

  • when the NERD said 4 stars it made me fucking pissed...... as the only one who loves BIG G for who he is and the movies for what they are i would like anyone to please ask me what makes a master fan and i will happly tell you all that you must know.......

  • um i dont think AJ the king of the monsters sounds right

  • GODZILLA IS THE KING

  • If Godzilla was meant to be a cross between Gorilla and Whale, how could they account for the fire he breathes?

  • @SuperBailey2009 Thats something he gained from the nuclear radiation. plus its not suppose to be his actual animal. Just characteristics. For instance his brute strength is what the gorilla represents. And his size is what the whale represents. Not to be like the actual size and strength I guess its just the Japanese way of describing things I don't know I only know so much about it.

  • in My Opinion "Godzilla" means "God" & "Lizard"(spelled Backwards).

  • @conradojavier godzilla means god of zillas

  • @Honeygmod still badass than "Messirex"(Messiah & T-Rex)

  • Still don't really enjoy the first Godzilla movie, & I watch my Godzilla movies in Japanese, not the rubbish dubed versions.

  • the screech always gives me chills

  • It's Cinemassacre's Monster Madness - Godzillathon!

  • joe bob

  • 64 people are tripping on acid.

  • I think this has been the 15th time I've watched this...

  • Dude i am totally subscribing and i never subscribe but your reviews are AWESOME...good job :)

  • Gojira was also made right after the Castle Bravo test on Bikini atoll that irradiated the tuna boat Lucky Dragon #5, killing one crew member.

The Tokyo scenes were based on the firebombed cities that Ishiro Honda saw as he crossed the country on his way home after the war. He's supposed to have passed through Hiroshima on the trip.

  • hey guys, theres this website owned by sony called crackle dot com where they have a bunch of free movies/tv shows with limited commercials kind of like hulu, and they actually have about 6 of the godzilla films! thumbs up so everyone can see this please, will be spreading the word as much as possible

  • @subsonicsnake It sucks that they only have the 90s and Millenium movies.

  • @nightbane2 well considering the fact that its free and you don't have to sign up for anything, i don't really see how it sucks, but okay. nobody is forcing you to watch.

  • well done on ur work...love it...but i hope u could make all the review all japan monster movie review such as gamera, mothra, etc.cheers...

  • I may be wrong, but I think this is the only film where Godzilla lays utter waste to Tokyo. In later films he knocks over a few random buildings here and there.

  • @Chris82bc Only other film where he lays waste to Tokyo is Godzilla 1985.

  • @PbODRIZZY Not really, in Godzilla 1985/The Return of Godzilla, he destroys some army vehicles that get in his way, a train, a submarine, and a couple buildings. Most of Tokyo is spared. In this film he destroys everything around him. About 90% of Tokyo is reduced to a wasteland. It literally looked like an atomic bomb was dropped on the city.

  • The rumor about the man with the nickname isn't true. I think it was Honda's wife who said it was an inside joke.

  • Japanese version w/ subtitles is better

  • oh cool!! im nick named the big G in summer school because both me and my teacher were the only godzilla fans in class

    so..... yeah PRETTY AWOME

    im nick named after godzilla!

  • @mealex6013 I have the American and the Japanese version.

  • @nightbane2 Mine just came with the original Gojira and it's american version with Raymond Burr.

  • that was not the first "Real" Godzilla movie. the first one was called Gojira. Find it on Netflix and you will see it.

  • godzilla ftw

  • Godzilla isn't doing all that because he's mean he's doing it because of the atomic bomb creating him and turning him into a monster so he's just taking his revenge on the world.

  • whooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! epic!

  • i like how he's so passionate about godzilla i grew up on godzilla myself i remember when i was little i would run around the house and pretend to be godzilla and cry at the end of the original and the 1985 one, i remember my family always new to get me something godzilla for my birthday or christmas and til this day i still collect them however i didn't care for the godzilla films after the 1980's idk if i just wasn't into them or maybe its just cause i didnt grow up on them like the old ones

  • you should make gamerathon

  • Hope he makes a godzillathon #30 for the 2012 godzilla movie project.

As I started to remember Godzilla in your videos I watched the movie again and I realized how much gold I had in my hands. This movie was KICK ASS!!!

  • Hi James, I've had a question for a long time, how do u make does videos where you have videos and pics and videos of urself and add audio and music over it, thanks

  • those 64 people who hate this review are gino fans

  • I have it on DVD and its a masterpiece.

  • I give Godzilla 1954 10/5. I call it a masterpiece. While I love the other Godzilla films, this one should've won an Academy Award for Best Picture.

  • If a monster was named after me I would be tickled.

  • I actually heard that the sound of Godzilla was actually the sound of the studio's creaky gate that was modified.

  • James if they ever make Godzilla documentary, i recommending u 4 narrator

  • thumbs up if you noticed there was no 2:47

  • @TheMotionMan112 thumbs up if u think who gives a shit

  • @theretrogamerno1 u mad bro

  • @TheMotionMan112 no r u

  • @theretrogamerno1 why would you think i was mad for asking simple, non-threatening question. that 1 in your username must represent your IQ, but i bet you don't know what an IQ is anyway.
