I guess with two scanners, (two line CCDs), one at each axis of the screen, the finickiness can go away even with 10 fingers.

An optical digitizer that doesn't surround the whole screen? Interesting. If I could just stick a sensor bar along the top of any monitor and get reliable multi-touch, that would be great!

I was working on a similar project with IR receiver LEDs, but failed to work because there had to be too many receivers. Your idea really works! Congratulations. I feature it today in my site.
