I still own mine! I used to take mine everywhere! Everything still works also. Well the tape still kind of works - I am afraid to put any tape in it for fear it will break for good.
Take a look at the '82 album cover of Grandmaster Flash, he has this one. Ya I wish i'd hung on to mine, bought in '81 at Crazy Eddies on E 57th. Those were the days, parks streets and subways filled with music before walkmans snuffed out alot of that. That was one of the best, JVC quality was excellent.
:) Boombox porn - I used to have this awesome machine in the UK growing up in the 80's (it came with a red nylon carry case) listenin' to Electro III and trying to breakdance on a square of lino from B & Q! Growing up in the 80's - I strangely miss it...funky track
JVC doesn't make squat in terms of portable music players any more-not even any CD walkman, compact recorders-normal or micro tape, let alone boom boxes- I went to their site recently.
Got mine back in 83 at AZ radio in dowtown Los Angeles.
It played tapes slightly fast out of the box (still does!) so I had to compensate by adjusting the recording speed on my home deck. 10 fuckin" D batteries! No wonder I have back problems. Still, "Scorpio" sounds no better blasted from anything else.
Should have hung on to mine. Tearing up with nostalgia, like missing an old friend. Was one of the nicest looking, quite powerful, not too massive, groove boxes. Ah! the memories. The beats and bass we enjoyed; nodding heads, popping and breaking. I was about fifteen too when I got mine. From Sugar Hill Gang to NWA, Kool and the Gang to SWV, and so many others.
sferemonk - You are spot on in describing it as quite powerful yet not too massive. I did a lot of research back then to find the best combination of sound quality and the right size box. To me and my friends it was about having great sound at friends houses not carrying it around on our shoulders. I pitted Crazy Eddies against another retailer and bought it for $295 if memory serves.
The JVC RCM-70 was my pride and joy at like age 15. Bought it new at Crazy Eddies on Long Island, at the time, Crazy Eddie would beat any price and so I got it at a good price. It was really heavy and took like 12 D batteries if I remember. I had it till like 2003, radio still worked, cassette was long gone. I left it on the side of the road with a sign looking for a new home. Someone picked up within minutes. RIP JVC RCM-70 my old friend.
I've finished my teen ages with the RC-M70 it was an awesome machine, it required 10 "D" size batteries for portable mode. I've paid 499.95$ in 1980 for one of those monsters.
Afrika Bambaataa huh ? For me, the very first track I ever heard on the RC-M70 was on the store shelf: a brand new song from Olivia Newton-John - Magic
last of the hard hitting jvc's.after this one, they seemed to start downsizing. take care of it , and please don't feed these ebay fools who are out to make a profit off portable stereo lovers.
the days when what you paid you got your moneys worth with quality.

I had a JVC myself and I wish I still had my boombox. One of the first jams I heard on it was, "Looking for the Perfect Beat."
