Finally: The fact that we insist on having privately funded campaigns means that each candidate has to raise millions of dollars every election cycle, and this is the kicker, we seem to prefer that they do it by calling thousands of individuals and begging for money. We don't want them to take public money, and we don't want them to take corporate money, so who's left? Just the independently wealthy, and those willing to spend weeks on the phone begging, and when would you have them do that?
Second: Congressional work in Washington is passing laws. More time in Washington, and more "working," means that Congress is passing more laws. There are very few people I've ever met who think that what we really need are more laws. Do you think that we don't have enough laws?
Bonus: What about time to read bills and research the issue so they can make well informed votes? Is that the sort of thing which can only happen when they're in Washington, away from home and family?
Three things (but I don't have enough space here, so I'll post them independently).
First: Am I to understand that what you'd really like, is for members of Congress to spend more time in Washington? Every election cycle, I hear people moan and groan about how this or that Congressperson is "out of touch," and that they "don't understand the problems of real [insert your state here]ians. I'm wondering if you think that spending more time in Washington would fix that.
purchase all new clothing, can't wear what someone has worn previously or they have... and all the choices with the current fashions, OH big time stress all the botox appointments, plastic surgery adjustments, etc... my goodness these things are stress. and do we take our own private jet or would that look bad to others? oh my i so feel
i have to stop cause just thinking of this is raising my blood pressure...
these poor folks work so hard, i feel 4 them so very much. the rest of us just u know live day 2 day and don't have 2 be concerned about our investments, etc... cause we don't have them... i am just waiting 4 local soup kitchen 2 open up around here then will be in 7th heaven in stead of hell. i guess they are in hell, darn imagine the stress of trying to figure where to go on a holiday, which home, condo or island (perhaps) they may own or borrow, now that is stress, not to mention having to
These vacations are NOT a problem. Numerous Congressional vacations aren't enough -- perhaps we need to pay each of our Congress critters a million dollars a year to go on permanent junkets 51 weeks a year. On balance, we'd be better off.
As the 19th century jurist said, "No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session."
Before air conditioning, congress left Washington before Memorial Day and didn't return until after Labor Day (the mosquitoes in Washington are as big as your head!) So, in a way, modern conveniences such as air conditioning are responsible for the national debt. Congress spends too many days as it is spending our money! I think they need to take off on Tuesdays and Thursdays and drive home every week. If we can limit them to Wednesdays only, there may be money left when we all retire!
I suggest a mass guillotine on the white house lawn and then hire some people that are not self-interested, and not trying to advance their own career on the backs of the american middle class.
Great explaination. I personally prefer that they are out of session as much as possible so they have less time to screw tihings up. Wihs they would do their job but they won't so get out of town.

Nice one, Uncle Jay. I watched this one as I only started watching you in 2009. Didn't know you had so many videos from 07 and 08 too.

And now you know why the approval rating for congress is lower than it is for Bush!
But you will never hear THAT on CNN, CBS, NBC,ABC and MSNBC

You ought to see the mosquitoes here in Florida. We've been here year-round for hundreds of years :-D

yeah, that worked great for the Frend didn't it? You think the US is "world domineering" now, wait till you pull off something like that.

Hit the nail on the head.
Although, having them in recess is better then putting them in timeout. Maybe we need Super Nanny or Nanny 911 to set them straight.
