There are many cameos of the Mario's world in Link's Awakening. There are goombas, piranha plants, a Yoshi doll... even a Kirby in the Eagle's Tower (although he is not from Mario's saga). Besides, the caracter of Tarin it's based on the caracter of Mario in my opinion (look at the part when he went out searching mushrooms and he was transformed onto a racoon).
