  • downward spiral was my fist concert..... not a nin head and kept them from being beat in hs.... but can not help being nostalgic. spfld, MO

  • Trent, you look so much like my grandfather

  • Trent, my dad and I both cried over this video... I need to show you something..

  • my one regret is that i never saw this live :(

  • veiled melancholy...brothers and sisters

  • 2:02 i <3 her :]

  • ^ You should check out Seth Rinehart's cover of Hurt - a modern cover... hope you like it :P

  • "But I remember everything."

  • great

  • And you could have it all, my empire of dirt, i will let you down, i will make you HURT.... damn its soo true, in the end we are left with what we came into this world with, nothing... yet people struggle for control of the little things called possesions, so very needlessly hurting one another, what a sad things the human race is, there is no humanity or civility in society. Maybe one day evolution will spread to the mind and evolve our thought process enough to care for one another.....

  • what have I become. my sweetest friend. everyone I know go's away in the end.

  • what an unbeleivable singer,,, as regards which version is better i would say they are both as good as eachother,, the perfect version would be a combination of the two,,, the forceful way cash sings the versus and the higher melody trent uses to sing the end of the chourus

  • To danny may you finally rest in peace

  • i dont like how it starts, but the eletric guitar in the ending add something to this song!

  • Wow. I knew it was by NIN, but I had only ever watched the JC version... assuming that it was so phenomenal that it couldn't be topped. Then I clicked on this...........................

  • one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!love trent and nine inch nails!

  • Today emotionally fucked up I rammed my fist to the wall, to hurt myself, to see if I still feel and I focussed on the pain the only thing that's real. Man never have I understood that like I do now... I didn't even minded the pain... since it wasn't more painful than the way I felt...

  • @Killerwolf2k3 What was it that made you feel like that?

  • ... And you can have it all ... My empire of dirt ...

  • Wow, hippyG..very few ppl surprise me in life, thank you for showing me...you. And Thomas, well I'm not surprised at all.LOL

Peace my friends....may we never know the true "Hurt"

  • although johnny cash's is a version, and his voice isn't as good, 'hurt' seems to explain his life, hence why it sounds beautiful on him. but nothing beats the original nine inch nails!

  • as neither a fan of nine inch nail or johnny cash but as a fan of music i would just like to say this version of hurt is far better than the johnny cash version, it sends a chill down my spine every time i hear it, what an unbelievable song

  • @budslee82 Cash's does the same for any of his fans though since he recorded it several months before he died, and the video was shot when he was very ill and frail. His version is far more poignant for me, it's basically him turning around and saying he may be a legend but he screwed up so much of his life with substance abuse, so to him it doesn't really matter.

  • 284 dislikes from my neighbors... but from me 1.000.000.000.000.000.000 + likes...

  • OMG, don't you guys have any idea how significient this song is to Johnny,it could have been written solely for him, his life, his needles, his demons, and losing june, then covering this song, if far deeper than most of us will ever know or understand,if you listen,(hippy) you hear the pain, destruction, hurt

in his voice....open ur mind, if you a true hippy...to judge....b judged...

you insult hippys ....all of us...

  • @TFC68ok Dude, I love Johnny Cash's version. He was a great musician and one I relate to. I absolutely love the fact that he covered it as it allows me to hear the same, beautiful song in a different, beautiful way. Even Trent Reznor's words after hearing Johnny's version were "This is no longer my song". I just wish more people would at least acknowledge Reznor's creation.

And my username is a parody of the paradoxical insult I often receive from the scumbags in my area. . .

  • @TFC68ok Lol. Nine inch nails version is so much better. Get with the times hippy

  • @TFC68ok when he covered the song June was still alive

  • @LostSinger22 @LOST STINGER --you are so right the song was released apr 24 of 03 and June passed may 16th --after being ill since Jan of 2003 she went in for surgery on her heart at the first of the month.so on paper your right, but come on ...well, I just lost my father on new years day of heart complications, and looking back months before, I see how badly he was off,and I think I knew...his time was coming... so blah blah blah tell me something worth arguing about, geeze

  • @TFC68ok Why do you go out on me all defensive, I just wanted to tell you that she was still alive and that she even appeared in his video and just thought that you may be confused. You need to learn not to just argue with people because I didnt even wrote it to sound bad or to prove you wrong... just saying, you are the one who is arguing about nothing.

  • This live version is better than the original. So emotional.

  • If you would like to learn this song check out my channel!!!! acoustic lesson:)

  • This song causes me to have flashbacks!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Its not whether Johnny Cash's version or Trent Reznor's version is better or worse. Both songs are performed differently, Trent's shows his subtle youthful frustrations and rage where as Johnny Cash's version is that of an old man looking back on his life, wishing, wanting his life to be different with a constant reminder that his life was getting short. Both are remarkable and true works of art, in my opinion.

  • @TheJaemilz i couldnt agree more i always see people arguing about this and it bothers me but i couldn't seem to put it into words like you had brava my hat is off to you

  • @TheJaemilz u say what everyone can see for themselves jeez all those ppl who think their smart on here lolz

  • Johnny is the MAN.

  • i think cash sings it better

dont gt mad i just lk him better

  • @1chuckjones but we don't care who does it better, it's WAAYYY easier to retake a song than compose it, I respect Cash's version, it's real good, but the best is ALWAYS the original no matter which sounds better... it's the first one so the real one

  • If Jack White and Trent Reznor teamed up, the world would explode.

  • honestly i like cash's version better, probably because i've heard it so many times. but i still do love this version.

  • @Spleenatron9 It's not a version, it's THE song. Cash's version is THE cover.

  • @manugoldstein yeah sorry

  • @manugoldstein you're right, but sometimes cover's are better than the original ones ;)

  • Both versions of this song are agonizingly beautiful.

  • Cash's was better in my opinion. he had the gift of wisdom and experience, good and bad. he poured his life into his cover

  • @FistingSweetness; I completely agree!! Had to hear this song just to confirm what I already knew (that this version suks!!) NO ONE could have sang it better than Johnny Cash! T.R. might have sang it first but it made me gag a little! lol There is not comparrison. CASH knew pain..

  • why would this faggot ruined johnny cash's song like this....HAVE SOME SHAME TRENT REZNOR, U SHOULD HAVE NEVER RUINED JOHNNYS SONG U EMO FAGGOT!!

  • @FistingSweetness

You mix things completely up,it's just the other way round;Cash ruined Reznor's song.

He wrote the original in the early '90's and his version has more power and intensity.

And by the way,NIN is far from emo...

An advice, inform yourself better before you start shouting your opinions around....

  • @FistingSweetness you call him emo because he wears black? ever of of the man in black????? god you are dumb

  • @FistingSweetness YOU SHOULD HAVE NEVER RUINED THE COMMENTS SECTION. He wrote the song. Cash covered it. YOU'RE AN EMO FAGGOT.

  • @FistingSweetness

    this original retard

  • @FistingSweetness i now pronounce you a fully fledged retard.

  • trent reznor is pop not industrial

  • @143tank

Not sure if troll, or just completely fucking retarded.

Not that being a pop artist is necessarily a bad thing, but to categorize Reznor's music as pop is calling 'black' as 'white'. I mean come on, man, how much NIN have you listened to? This one live performance, which doesn't sound like the album version? Their entire corpus of work is industrial: Reptile, Meet Your Master, Heresy, Where is Everybody, The Only Thing... just off the top of my head. Go back to listening to Tool.

  • @12downwardspiral tool rules loser, go listen to ur manson and ur nin u poser i bet u like justin beiber and nsync, u homo even ministy is better then those fags, no wait ur a thug u lile lil wayne lol

  • @143tank

Didn't say Tool was bad, man. I've listened to their entire corpus many times and Maynard's other projects. I suggested you keep listening to Tool, since you seem to have trouble listening to other artists, seeing as you come onto a NIN video and make fucking uninformed, bat shit-stupid comments without (clearly) having listened to any of Reznor's work.

  • @12downwardspiral ive seen him comment that on other nin videos too...

  • Trent Reznor has been the best emotional song writer of the past 20 years. This guy has helped through so many hard times & has never failed at it. LONG LIVE NIN \m/

  • absolutely beautiful.

  • I got serious chills watching this.

  • this sounds way happier than johnny's version..

  • ARE YOU FUCKING KIDING ME?!?!?! HOW THE FUCK THIS JUST GOT AROUND 3 MILLION VIEWS?! THIS IS A FUCKING MASTER PIECE!!!!

  • @ocapoeiristadiogo because everyone is running to watch what's mainstream and good music has nothing to do with mainstream music, very sad era we live in :(

  • Johnny Cash and Trent Reznor both have different approaches to the song. Each is beautiful, emotive and powerful, but in it's own way.

  • @HippyGathFreak But we need to give more credit to the original...i meen trent did an OK cover but johnny cash actually WROTE the song.

  • @1991jmoney No Trent wrote the song lol.

  • @1991jmoney Trent wrote the song.

  • @1991jmoney

Absolutely wrong.Trent wrote the song in the early '90"s.It's on the album 'The Downward Spiral' and cash's version is from 2002 or 2003 if I am not mistaking...

  • @1991jmoney Troll unsuccessful. Trent wrote it in the early 90's, and performed it perfectly Cash covered it almost a decade later. Do some research...

  • @HippyGathFreak True, but the original always has an advantage because it's the way the song was written and interpreted by the composer, which is an important factor. It's easier to imitate than compose.

  • @manugoldstein I agree with that. But that's judging the artist, I was talking about judging the song

  • @HippyGathFreak you forgot to mention johnny cash's version is shit

  • @HippyGathFreak

Trent has stated in person that he's a bigger fan of the Johnny Cash version nonetheless I love 'm both...

  • @RanchoCoral

You're almost correct.Van Gogh lived to see one of his pictures sold.

This is "The Red Vineyard",which was sold to Anna Boch shortly before he died.

  • Artists come togther for the art, the money is for rappers and producers. Van Goh didnt live to see one of his paintings sold.

  • Hundredth's cover of this<3

  • I saw NIN in 08', and they were freaking AWESOME!!

  • Epic

  • Best fucking version I've ever heard. Crowd gets so into it.

  • @ShamuNtheHomies Is the original....

  • @IIArtharisII Yes I know

  • fucking awesome song and Jonnhy Cash did a great cover love both versions...

  • Fuck Mitt Romney and youtube.

  • guys stfu... enjoy the song......and btw NIN did The Downward Spiral in 1994 and Hurt was on that album.... Johnny Cash covered the song in 03 and made a more emotional video with the song, on his American IV: The Man Comes Around album...

  • Such a brilliant song.

  • Once upon a time,i looked up a song on You Tube and seen that there was no arguing what so ever about who made a song or how crappy it was or how great it is compared to another version and people just listened and dreamed =)

  • guitar player is just waiting to rock those three chords

  • trent just f*cked every single person in that audience

  • This is way more emotional live.

  • It's sad that on Wikipedia it practically only mentions Trent for this song once. I guess that's what you get on a user-written site when almost half the people who like this song think Cash wrote it...

  • @jimmyphonghater Which irritates me beyond belief. haha

  • @1991jmoney fail troll is fail

  • @1991jmoney Check out a brain...

  • @1991jmoney its not a cover jackass

  • @1991jmoney LOL This IS the original. Trent Reznor wrote Hurt. Johnny Cash covered it (amazing version it is too). Get your facts straight.

  • @booglespud He was trolling, you know ^^

  • @1991jmoney i hope your joking

  • @IDontDoDrumCovers you dont do drum covers...but trent reznor does hurt covers.

  • @1991jmoney dude check out the dates when these were released. johnny cash's is great but it as released almost a decade after nine inch nail's :/

  • @JoshDias1 your dates are backwards it was on "the downward spiral" by johnny cash released in 1994. Trent reznor covered it before he died but johnny cash said he made the song his so your right n a way.

  • @1991jmoney no actually I haven't nine inch nails did hurt originally in 1995 and then johnny cash did a cover of it in 2003. So I am right. Btw downward spiral was a NIN's album not johnny cash.

  • @JoshDias1 Lol I was just trolling ...BUT hurt was out in (94) with the downward spiral

  • @1991jmoney

    THIS IS THE ORIGINAL

NIN did hurt in 1994 for the downward spiral album.CAsh's version is from 2003,almost a decade later...

  • this versions is better than chash's cause he interprets the lyrics. J. Cash version is very great, his voice is so powerful. but he doesnt interprets the song. the voice is the same in all the song, has no variatons of a suffered person.

  • Just had to watch this again to wipe Leona's version off my mind completely.

  • I Have to admit i have slowly been getting into this band...at first i wasnt interested in their kinda music but i think stuff like 300 and Dave Fincher movies have gotten me interested and Trent is a real artist his music in a way feels abstract its confusing but honest...but The Social Networks score is still overated..

  • Leona is one of the worlds biggest stars, 30 million record sales, world wide number 1s, diamond selling artist thats who leona is

  • @iloveuleona

Mainstream popular music has nothing to do with good music. It's easy quick entertainment without deepness a seldom exception not mentioned.

Most of the people are easy to influence, don't think and form opinions for themselves and just watch and listen what the media is telling them to consume just like everybody else.

  • Suicidal thoughts lurke about my mind.

  • Leona did it better.

  • @sillynoah She did yes, she puts sooooo much soul into her music, well said

  • 5 minute long orgasm

  • @BetoWanKenobi93 his versions fantastic but no.the dynamics in this song are just superb

  • Cash's version just doesn't do it for me, I can't hear emotion in his cover, I hear merely boredom. Trent really has passion when he sings this though, absolutely class.

  • Fuck these people who are clapping. You're ruining my listening experience!

  • @pinkfloydfan417

    how dare they cheer

  • Leona's version is great, she's a pop singer, so she sings it like a pop singer... That's why most of u guys don't really like it, but still, is an amazing version and her voice/singing are flawless. Johnny and NIN versions are unbelieveble as well.

The truth is: This song is outstanding!

  • @MrLasveguinhas

I don't agree.leona's version is flawed.Technically it is maybe very good but it lacks all emotion and therefor it's worthless from my point of view...

  • I heard Cash's version first, and NIN's original ruined that for me. To me, this version is so much better. Despite the fact that this is such a personal song to Reznor, it translates so smoothly to anyone else's hardships, as demonstrated by Cash. Trent sings it with so much more passion. Happens to be my personal favorite song, even though it's nothing like what I usually listen to. Helps me get through hard times. Just my take, it's an amazing song regardless of who performs it.

  • Both versions (NIN and Johnny's) are pretty good, but I really can't stand Leona Lewis. Also, I'll never understand why so many people think NIN's version is a cover. It was released in 1994...

  • Its not a Johnny Cash cover. This is the Original

  • I have a lot of respect for Trent Reznor for writing such an amazing song, but Johnny cash's version is better. just because of the life he lived and how well it describes him. he sings it with way more emotion, it doesn't sound like a cover. Even trent says Johnny's version is better

  • Johny Cash is my idol people, and he has lots of GREAT songs. But this is NIN song, and no one sings it better than Trent.

  • @loameer

Well said.I don't understand why lot's off people think the NIN version is the cover...

  • johnny cash viewcount: 28 million

    NIN viewcount: 3.8 million

respect to both, but the people love CASH

  • @MrKringle09

What majority off the people want leaves me deadcold. It's because the majority off the people are lame and stupid we live in a shitty world...

  • Why does everyone think NIN covered this? JOHNNY CASH did! Reznor wrote it. I personally like this one better. It has much more emotion in it in my OPINION, gives me goosebumps!~ <3

  • @RocknRollRebel06 Always say the same

  • @RocknRollRebel06 Because it sounds like an old man's song. So much shit happened in Johnny Cash's life and he sings it with such emotion that people assume he wrote it specifically about regrets in his old age. I like both versions for different reasons.

  • but the original is better imho.

  • @Erhacape

This is the original, cash covered it

  • if johny cash covers your song, it's not your song anymore.

  • I like both versions of this song the nine inch nails one and the johnny cash one because they both have different feels to them.

  • fuck that looked like an amazing concert.

  • @MacGovernor expert troller?

  • @MacGovernor

Cash's version is the cover, this is the original written in 1994 on The downward spiral album.

Johnny's version is from 2003,almost a decade later...

  • rage, rage, rage, hate, hate hate, rage, rage, rage, hate, rage, hate, rage. Thank god Trent's music is here and not just the comments.

  • Can people stop comparing to Johnny cash. There the same song but at the same time completely different.

  • I actually don't feel well after watching this. I get such a rush of emotions... One of the best songs of all time.

  • This song is much better sung by Johnny Cash

  • @bradylpetersen Why not say, to be kind, that YOU like Johnny's version better...or maybe, better yet, NOT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL THAT IS MEAN?? HATER!!

  • @bradylpetersen Johnny Cash didn't write this song, Trent Reznor put his all into this song, I love Johnny Cash too but in this case the original outshines the cover.

  • Warning: most of the comments are arguing about pointless shit.

  • @MsLegionofhell I know so pointless. Everyone knows Nine Inch Nails version

  • 3:24 and on :-D makes me happy

  • i like johnnys cover too, but his version is when you're sad and depressed and NINs is when you get over that and don't give a fuck about anything

  • I wear this crown of thorns, upon my liar's chair full of broken thoughts, I cannot repair beneath the stains of time, the feelings disappear you are someone else, I am still right here. what have I become? my sweetest friend everyone I know goes away in the end and you could have it all my empire of dirt.

  • @theallstar25 we all heard the song, we dont care.

  • OMG! great performance. All I can Focus on is the pain,.. the only thing thats real... oh well.

  • la pubblicità su youtube ha cagato il cazz!

  • 1:10 - 1:20 Moshpit man was sucked into Reznor's abyss. . .

  • I had a go at a girl who thought this was originally by Leona Lewis. Ooooopppssss....

  • Why is it everytime some tool covers a song everyone loses the plt? just enjoy music, this is obviously the most poignant version as it is the original but if someone covers it who cares? don't listen to it!

  • Hey let's fight about who covered this song the best all over the video, or even better, shut the fuck up, and remember that there wouldn't be ANY covers if the original hadn't been written. Rezner is a fantastic writer.

  • @NukeCulear Of course I agree with you about NIN, but that was not the point. I believe all themusic make by NIN it's fantastic, but this don't need to be extreme to the point we can't listen to others and give opinion about the quality. For me the music Hurt made by NIN is the best one. He can show so much filling that touch us and make we think about the lyrics. Cash was a good version also, but I for me not like cash. The leona version I don't think she show the "hurt" only "money

  • @NEDJ19 I did and she doesn't, sorry. Her song is cheesy and made to sound like some kind of Mariah Carey. Not what this song is about. She has a great voice and lots of talent, but the emotion of this song is with Reznor and Cash, each in their own way.

  • @NEDJ19

    sorry she doesn't.It sounds to perfect,to smooth,like a popsong.

It is not what this song is about.Maybe she is a technical better singer but her voice is cold without any comprehension of what she is actually singing. To me it sounds like a computer that received vocal chords.

Trent's version is the best and will be forever...

  • Noone will perform this better than johnny cash

  • After read of it's wrote here, and since it was the first time I see someone talking about leona lewis (sorry my ignorance but never heard about her before) I decide to listen first her version and then give my opinion.

NIN and Cash make very good versions with filling that touch anyone. Leona lewis don't show in my opinion filling that touch others (only fans). This is a Sad song about pain, she don't show it. She only create a nice commercial version to sell not to stay in music history.

  • whos Leona?

  • my fucking life...

  • I loooove this song so much

  • Everyone i know goes away in the end!

  • My mom likes this song, and she is in her eighties. Music joins us and reminds us we are one.

  • If I could start again a million miles away

  • Shutup about other singers, and listen to the damn music!!!!!!

  • I was actually going to get the first part of this song tattooed on my back as a memorial to my brother that had it on his back. this song means the world to me. R.I.P chris van moorsel. Youre the greatest big brother i could have ever asked for.

  • wow
