Provided the engine was sufficiently warmed prior to the burnout, holding high sustained rpms isnt that bad for it. the Rev limiter was built for a reason - to stop the engine reving higher than what it was built to withstand... in engine testing, they tests like reving a test engine on the limiter for weeks on end, with no problems... if people say that your going to blow it up, they dont know what they are on about...

to start, he was in 1st gear.

let me explain it to you simply. the clutch's job is to disconnect the engine from the gearbox and driveline so you can change gears. when the clutch is in, it doesn't matter what the engine is doing, its not connected to the wheels. if he disconnected the engine from the wheels, no torque would be going to the wheels , and they will grip to the road, the burnout will end.

... but as soon as you take the clutch back OUT, with enough RPM, given it's a torquey V8, it will start to spin again, and given the fact that second gear is alot longer, a higher speed will be achieved at the rear wheels, aswell as the car not having to rev as hard, thus causing more smoke and more crowd response.

b) the tool that said in the begining he was in 2nd, no he wasnt, he was in neutral... get a manuel car, genernally 2nd gear is bottom left, not center.
