Now I can understand church folks were so mad at Ray. My grandmother to this day says Ray cant sing and a sell out. She has the same feeling about Aretha Franklim jumping to "Rhythm and Blues."
Before accusing Ray of ripping someone off, give a listen to Josh White's There's a man goin around taking names, written by Leadbelly.it was recorded in the 30' long before the Southern Tones did It must be Jesus....musicians have used each other lyrics, melodies, chord progressions for since the beginning.
That Ray Charles somehow "ripped off" the original composer of "It Must Be Jesus" by turning it into "I Got A Woman" is nonsense! Everytime someone sings "I Got A Woman", the original composer of "It Must Be Jesus" receives a check in the mail! Within the music industry, there is a name for this type of activity. It is called "doing business"! Everytime a waiter sings "Happy Birthday" to a customer, the original composer receives a check in the mail! ASCAP, BMI and SESAC protect composers!
Smh at Ray Charles! I was curious why they said you can't then a gospel music into R&B. He literally just changed the lyrics but I love it regardless. Thanks for posting this!
Are you even a musician? Probably not. Yes its the same melody but adding his piano playing and his r&b blues and jazz feeling to it made it totally different. You think ray charles is a rip off when he did modern sounds of country and western ?
@yoface5494 Being influenced by something is one thing, ripping something off is another. Ray Charles was a musical genius and most of his songs were original and exceptionally crafted; however, this is one of his biggest hits and it is indeed a blatant rip-off. So to answer your question: Did I lose respect for Ray Charles? Yup.
It reminds me a song called "Ain't That Good News" recorded by Little Richard in... 1953 !!! (Few Years later Sam Cooke covered it in an uptempo version.) Could someoe tell me if The Thouthern Tones were directly inspired by this Little Richards' song? Thanks ;)
Both this and I got a woman are great songs but the whole "Ray Charles was doing something completely unprecedented by reworkin gospel" is nonsense, Blind Lemon Jefferson had reworked church songs way before and so did Dinah Washington in the early 50s
lol thats why in the movie his wife was like ray it sound sacrilegious but man this sounds sooooo good to me..i feel like i got an old spirit or sumthn and im only twenty..this is awesome thank goodness for youtube
The Other Way Around,The Original Of This Was Out Before Ray Recorded I've Got A Woman,I Posted This One Because I Think This Is The Best Version Of It

Wow, I really wish I hadn't listened to this. I just lost a lot of respect for Ray Charles, what a blatant rip off. He barely changed anything...

As the basis of "I Got a Woman" who wrote this (I mean "It must be Jesus")? What year did it come out?

a lot of negro gospel sounded the same in those days its rather hard to tell them apart.
the chorus patterns and beat where more common than songs.
